Jim Sorgi & Rhys Lloyd Visiting Big Blue

By Dan Benton

According to Jim Sorgi’s agent, Matt Brei, the quarterback is schedule to meet with the New York Giants for a workout sometime today.

The six-year NFL veteran and long-time Manning family friend seems like an ideal candidate for the backup job now that David Carr has officially signed with the San Fransisco 49ers. After six seasons of observing the best quarterback the NFL has to offer, there’s no doubt Sorgi would bring a mental value to the Giants.

In his six seasons with Indianapolis, the former sixth-round pick appeared in 16 games and completed 99 of 156 passes for 929 yards, six touchdowns and one interception.

In addition to Sorgi, Ralph Vacchiano of The Blue Screen, the Giants are also expected to take looks a both Jeff Garcia and Mark Brunell.

On a non-quarterback-related note, Vacchiano also reports that New York is expected to host kick-off specialist Rhys Lloyd on Tuesday.

Scheduled to be a restricted free agent, Lloyd wasn’t tendered by Carolina which means if the Giants do sign him, they won’t owe the Panthers any compensation. However, this is all based on the assumption that he even makes it to New York in the first place, as he’s scheduled to meet with the Minnesota Vikings today.

Lloyd recorded 21 touchbacks on 72 kickoffs last season. In comparison, Lawrence Tynes had only six on 86 kickoffs.

2:00 UPDATE – Jim Sorgi has been sent for a physical; a good sign he’s on the verge of signing with Big Blue.

Antrel Rolle Comments on Becoming a Giant; Jeff Garcia on the Radar

March 6th, 2010 at 12:14 PM
By Dan Benton

Over the last 24-48 hours, everything regarding Antrel Rolle has been discussed at great length. Is he poor in coverage? Did he just play well in his contract year? And will his lack of leadership be relevant when he takes the field?

Some of the questions were both easy to answer and ignore. However, the one I was really interested in was the latter. What kind of leader, if any, is Rolle?

Well, after his first conference call with the media, many Giants beat writers came away highly impressed with Rolle.

“Very impressed with Rolle. Reminds me a lot of [Antonio Pierce] and has that swagger that was missing from the defense last year,” Pat Traina of Inside Football wrote.

From the sounds of it, thoughts of Rolle’s inability to lead were greatly exaggerated. And his confidence and determination seem to back that up.

“[Kenny Phillips and I will be] the best in the league,” Rolle said. “Hands down”

Rolle also talked about his big hit on Kevin Boss from this past season.

“Not going to be strange at all. We’re all men. Wasn’t intentional; was coming to make a statement,” he added. “When I’m on the field I show no pity for the next man. I’m definitely a head hunter. I want to make sure my presence is felt.”

Rolle also said he plans to travel to Miami to help Phillips rehabs. Claims he “won’t leave his side.”

Finally, the Giants’ newest safety said Arizona was willing to match any offer New York made, but that Big Blue “felt like home”…similar to the way he felt about Miami in college.

Quotes:

Kevin Boss on Antrel Rolle:

Very excited to hear about the signing of A. Rolle…glad he is on my team now!”

Tom Coughlin:

“The idea that this is associated with the Kenny Phillips situation is incorrect.”

Other Notes:

- The Giants have waived defensive backs Aaron Rouse and Londen Fryar.

- Should David Carr eventually sign with the San Francisco 49ers, Jeff Garcia could be a likely candidate to replace him. WFAN is reporting that the former Eagle is on a very short list of backup quarterbacks the Giants are considering taking a look into.

Report: Rolle to Giants 95% Done

March 5th, 2010 at 12:57 PM
By Dan Benton

According to NFL Network, a deal between the New York Giants and free agent safety Antrel Rolle is “95% done. However, that report could just be a smokescreen sent out by his agent fishing for better offers, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

According to Pro Football Talk, two other teams – the Miami Dolphins and Arizona Cardinals – remain in the hunt for his services.

Considering how cheap the Bidwell’s typically are, you can all but cross Arizona off the list. And if you factor in that Rolle already turned down a $6 million annual contract with them, I’d say it’s safe to assume this is a two team race.

3:20 PM UPDATE – Ralph Vacchiano reports that Rolle is taking a physical for the Giants, but if the Dolphins up their offer in the final moments, the tides could shift dramatically.

5:05 UPDATE – Mike Garafolo reports that in addition to Antoine Bethea and Oshiomogho Atogwe, the Giants are also talking to Darren Sharper as possible backups, should the Antrel Rolle deal not get finalized.

5:30 UPDATEThe South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that the Giants and Rolle are “finalizing a deal.”

7:04 UPDATE – Mike Garafolo tweets that Rolle will give Arizona a chance to match the offer Big Blue gives him…however, it remains unlikely that the Cardinals will be able to do so.

Other Notes:

- NFL sources say David Carr to the 49ers is very likely; “it’s the 49ers to lose.”

- Pat Traina hints that the Giants may reach out to Mark Brunell should they lose David Carr.

- Cornerback Aaron Ross and long-time girlfriend Sanya Richards were married on Feb. 26th.

- PFT says free agent linebacker/defensive end Aaron Kampmann will visit the Eagles first. However, Jay Glazer says that information is inaccurate and that Kampmann is taking the weekend to decide his next step.

- Mike Garafolo also reports that the Giants have contacted OJ Atogwe’s agent.

Giants’ Eli Manning Has ‘Stress Reaction’

November 29th, 2009 at 3:46 PM
By Dan Benton

Just when you think things cannot get any worse for the NewYork Giants, reality rears its ugly head and it does.

According to ESPN,a recent MRI on Eli Manning’s footrevealed what’s being called a “stress reaction“on his cuboid bone…a new injury that makes Manning susceptible to a stressfracture that would almost certainly end his 2009 season.

The report went on to state that Easy E has been seenfavoring the foot as recently as Thursday night, but added that Giants’officials are not surprised and were well aware that his plantar fasciitiscould lead to a stress reaction.

In an effort to prevent a stress fracture, Big Blue’s medicalstaff has been feverishly treating Manning, trying to keep him off his feet asmuch as possible and using a bone stimulator on the affected area.

Should Manning eventually suffer a stress fracture, it’slikely that David Carr would step inas New York’s starting quarterback.

Giants Drop the Ball, Fall to Jets 27-25

By Dan Benton

The New York Jets won their Super Bowl on Saturday night, defeating the New York Giants 27-25 in front of a thin East Rutherford crowd.

Positives:

Eli Manning – Thestats aren’t going to tell the whole story, but Manning looked very good onSaturday night. There were a couple of overthrows and times where he and thereceivers didn’t seem like they were on the same page, but overall, hisperformance was very encouraging.

Mario Manningham -I can’t believe I’m actually saying this, but I came away from the gameextremely impressed with Manningham (outside of his one drop). He was quick inand out of his cuts, ran good routes and was consistently open. He was able toget behind the defenders and caused all kinds of problems for the Jets. Still, consistency is essential and I want to see him do this on a week-to-week basisbefore I eat that entire plate of crow.

Mathias Kiwanuka -Kiwi was all over the field on Saturday night, putting constant pressure on thequarterback and forcing plays to develop faster than the Jets would have liked. He also showed great pursuit and looked like someone with a chip on hisshoulder.

Ahmad Bradshaw -Along with the other running backs, Bradshaw put on another show last night.Every time I watch him, I can’t help but to say “wow.” The kid possesses allthe intangibles you want out of a speed back and looks particularly explosivethis year. He’s a lot more talented than people give him credit for.

David Carr – Aweek after being criticized by QB coach ChrisPalmer, Carr came out and played quite well. Not only did he look solidthrough the air, but he made a few plays with his feet. I still wouldn’t feelcomfortable with him leading the offense, but he’s certainly a better optionthan Andre’ Woodson and Rhett Bomar.

Hakeem Nicks -His drop aside, Nicks was the star of the offense on Saturday night. He hauledin six catches for 144 yards and two touchdowns. Sure, it may have been againstthe Jets’ scrubs, but he did what he had to do and probably earned himself alarger role in the process.

Negatives:

Dropped passes – Although the wide receivers showed a lot ofpromise on Saturday night, a big issue was dropped passes. Not only did SteveSmith drop a sure touchdown pass, but Domenik Hixon dropped a ball thatresulted in an interception and then points for Gang Green. (Darcy Johnson,Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham all added a drop of their own.)

Missed tackles – The Giants missed tackles? No! That’s suchan oddity…right? Sarcasm aside, the amount of missed tackles on Saturday nightis a serious concern. Big Blue gave the Jets entirely too many second chancesand often paid for it. It’s something the team needs to work on and something I’msure Tom Coughlin is not happyabout.

Kevin Dockery -Yikes. Dockery had an extremely poor night and looked out of sorts. He wasroutinely beaten, missed tackles and at one point, couldn’t even handle a slowroute run by a tight end.

C.C. Brown -Brown looks like he still belongs in Houston…or perhaps even college. He appearedconfused and overmatched last night, frequently missing tackles and acting likehe had no idea what was going on. I don’t think he’s in any danger of beingcut, but I certainly hope he can round himself into some sort of mental shapebefore the season begins.

Kevin Gilbride – He’salready in midseason form! Don’t think I really need to say anything else.

Darcy Johnson -You are the weakest link…goodbye! Horrible penalties, dropped passes, nearlygetting Carr killed…I’d say MichaelMatthews has him beat out.

Quick Hits:

- Jonathan Goff looked pretty solid aftertaking over for Chase Blackburn.

- Did anyone noticethe game Madison Hedgecock had? Theguy is a monster.

- Brandon Jacobs can catch!

- It looks like BigBlue came away from the game without suffering any serious injuries. Hallelujah!

- Where the hellwas Justin Tuck? He seemed veryquiet last night.

- The startingoffensive line looked very solid.

- I tried to keepan eye on Bryan Kehl, but he didn’treally do anything to stand out. I guess that’s both good news and bad news.

- Danny Ware was not only solid on the ground, but did a great job picking up blitzers.

- Jeff Feagles is Jeff Feagles.

- The kickoff coverage is much improved from a year ago.
