Geno Smith, Josh Johnson struggle in Giants’ loss to Steelers

 The Giants better hope Eli Manning only misses preseason games.

The veteran quarterback sat out Friday’s preseason opener against the Steelers at MetLife Stadium while Josh Johnson struggled and Geno Smith had some bad moments in a 20-12 loss.

Smith probably did enough to take the lead in that battle, completing seven of his first 10 passes for 84 yards before throwing an interception from the Giants’ 30.

“Coach always talks about making a bad play worse, a miscommunication but you know, that’s solely on me,” he said.

Smith did appear to do a good job moving the chains, completing as many first downs in his first series (4) than Johnson did all game.

He finished the game 10 of 16 for 114 yards.

“I just got to try and continue to improve,” Smith said. “This game is hard enough as it is and there’s some things I have to do better on the field and that’s what I really focus on, is trying to be my best …
