Police in Westchester County feel they may have saved the life of Sheila Mara, daughter of late New York Giants owner Wellington Mara, and several others after they arrested her for allegedly driving while intoxicated last weekend.
CBS New York reports that Mara was forced to stop by a squad car shortly after she passed a “do not enter” sign on King Street in Port Chester and promptly collided head-on with a Taxi cab. Authorities say that following the collision, Mara backed up, drove around the Taxi and left the scene.
“It’s a recipe for death, not only for her, but for others” Port Chester police Capt. John Tedesco said. “The Merritt late at night is a treacherous road when you’ve been drinking. Thank God we were able to stop her when we did.”
Police allegedly followed her for several miles — speeds never exceeding 45 MPH — but she apparently did not see nor hear the sirens behind her. Once she was finally forced to pull over, right before turning onto Merritt Parkway Entrance, Mara reportedly blew a .22.
Mara has been charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, driving the wrong way and leaving the scene of an accident.
This is the most recent event in a string of legal troubles for the Mara family. Earlier this month, Stephen Mara, the grandson of Wellington Mara, was arrested for arson in New York City after allegedly setting motorcycles on fire in the Gramercy Park neighborhood. Meanwhile, Jack Mara, nephew of Giants co-owner John Mara, was accused of a vicious New Year's Eve assault in which the victim suffered a fracture skull. However, in early October, Jack was cleared on all charges when new witnesses came forward saying another man had taken responsibility for the attack.
