The New York Giants are paper thin at the running back position heading into their Week 7 game against the Minnesota Vikings on Monday night at MetLife Stadium.
David Wilson is out for the next 3-4 weeks with a neck injury and isn't guaranteed to return to the team as he is dealing with spinal stenosis and a herniated disc, Brandon Jacobs has missed the last couple of days with a sore hamstring and Da'Rel Scott was waived with the expectation that if he is not claimed, he will likely be placed on season-ending injured reserve with a hamstring injury he suffered against the Chicago Bears this past Thursday night.
On Tuesday, the Giants held workouts with several running backs; as they had in Danny Ware, Jeremy Wright, Ryan Torain and Peyton Hillis. None were signed to a contract on Tuesday, but Conor Orr of the Newark-Star Ledger has reported that the team is having all of the players come back to the team's complex on Wednesday to take physicals.
It's not clear which players have the best shot of making the team; as Ware and Torain have the experience with the Giants but have not played in the regular season, although Torain was with the team in the summer time during the team's preseason games.
Hillis was a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2013, but he did not take a single snap for the team and was released from his contract on September 21.
Jacobs could still return to the team for Monday night against the Vikings, as right now he is the starting running back by default with all of the injuries, but given the fact that there is literally no depth at the position with the exception for a rookie who the team isn't in a hurry to give live game snaps to, the team could be looking to sign at least one, maybe two players on Wednesday.
The Giants will hope to get Andre Brown back from the temporary injured reserve list for Week 10, as he will have been on the list for the required eight weeks, but then the team has a bye in Week 9.
