With the New York Giants running back depth torn to shreds, it comes as no surprise that the team would look to outside help for options.
With Brandon Jacobs sitting out of practice as a precautionary because of a hamstring bothering him, that left rookie Michael Cox as the lone running back for the Giants at practice on Monday, even though he has yet to take a single snap on offense this year.
Conor Orr of the Newark-Star Ledger reported on Monday night that the Giants will work out Peyton Hillis and Danny Ware on Tuesday at practice; as both could look for a roster spot and hope to potentially be signed before the team plays the Minnesota Vikings next Monday night.
Ware is no stranger to the team, as he is a former Giant himself and was on the team from 2007-2011 and spent time as a backup running back and a kick returner before moving on to play with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2012. In 16 games, Ware had 11 carries for 51 yards along with 14 catches for 100 yards with no touchdowns in Tampa. Ware has yet to play a single game in the 2013 season.
Hillis was recently with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but was released from the team after the team didn't find any use for him in the offense. Last year, Hillis played in 13 games for the Kansas City Chiefs; as he rushed for 309 yards on 85 carries with one touchdown. Hillis' best season in the NFL was back in 2010 as a member of the Cleveland Browns when he had 1,177 yards and 11 touchdowns, but hasn't been the same player since.
The Giants won't get Andre Brown until at least Week 10 after he comes off the temporary injured reserve when the team returns from their bye week and will be without David Wilson for a few weeks dealing with a neck injury.
If Ware or Hillis impresses in the workout on Tuesday, one could find themselves added, but that move happening will depend on Jacobs' hamstring and if he will be able to go on Monday night against the Vikings, as the veteran is now the starting running back for the time being until the others return.
