New York Giants Will Place Andre Brown on IR with Designation to Return … Eventually

Although the team has not made an official announcement, New York Giants running back Andre Brown sent out a tweet on Tuesday indicating that he had been placed on short-term Injured Reserve (IR) with designation to return.

After suffering the broken leg in a 28-20 preseason loss to the New England Patriots, Brown claimed the injury was minor and said he hoped he'd be back in only a few weeks.

"I would love to stay active," he said. "That is how I feel. I feel I can come back from this within a couple of weeks, and that's how small it is. We are definitely looking at it positively."

With the short-term IR designation, Brown cannot begin practicing until after week six and cannot play again until after week eight — which means the earliest he'll see the field again is week 10 against the Oakland Raiders (the team has a bye week during week nine).

With Brown now on IR, it opens up a spot on the Giants' 53-man roster and the team has already spoken to the agents of a number of different running backs including Ryan Grant and Kevin Smith. However, with veteran contracts guaranteed prior to week one, the team will likely wait until week two before they sign anyone.

Update: Tom Rock of Newsday reports that the Giants are not putting Brown on short-term IR … today. It's important to remember the team can place him on IR with a designation to return at any point prior to their week two game. They've likely informed Brown they will do this (evident by his tweet), but are waiting. For what reason? We don't know.

    Ryan Grant And Kevin Smith?

Why kick the tires on these guys? did they even play last year?

This guy wants an NFL worthy contract. I don’t think anybody but his own leg is going to stop him. Honestly if he didn’t end up hurting his leg this preseason he probably would have out-played Wilson.

You can see the fire and determination from him when he runs out there, he knows one decent NFL contract could set him up for life. I hope he gets over these injuries and gets one of those contracts (not from us though). Seems like a genuinely great guy.

Makes total sense. Let him heal and rest up then return for the stretch run. They should bring back Torrain til Brown gets back

very interesting. I’d obviously love that to happen… just not so sure that’s gonna be the case. Only time will tell.

I think ESPN had 4/5 writers put us in 2nd, the last put us at 3rd in the division.

    good decision by the Giants
Makes Brown available for the 2d half when we will certainly need the running game to kick it up a notch

here’s a question: if the giants go out and sign a vet, who gets released to make room?
