When the New York Giants open the 2013-2014 regular season eight days from now, they'll do so without safety Stevie Brown, running back Andre Brown and offensive linemen David Diehl and David Baas. Unfortunately, despite his desire and determination to play, they may also be without wide receiver Victor Cruz, who is still nursing a bruised heel.
“In my head I am [I am playing],” Cruz told the Daily News on Friday. “But there’s still doctors and everybody has to look at me. But in my head I’m definitely playing.”
Cruz initially suffered the injury in a 21-12 loss to the Indianapolis Colts in week two of the preseason, and remained on crutches and in a walking boot until earlier this week. He sat out all remaining training camp practices and did not play against either the New York Jets or New England Patriots. And while he understands the significance of the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys, he also acknowledges that the team needs him at his max potential.
“I just want to play,” Cruz said. “But I understand how much my team needs me just to be out there as a catalyst to help us win, a player who knows the offense and is comfortable. I understand that I have to be out there for us to be at our maximum potential, to have our best chance to win.”
In other words, Cruz wants to play against the Cowboys, plans to play against the Cowboys, but is not 100% certain that team doctors will allow him to play against the Cowboys.
The reality is, the Giants are facing their week one opener with the potential of missing a multitude of players. In addition to the aforementioned Brown, Brown, Diehl, Baas and Cruz, the team will also be without safety Will Hill (suspended) and could potentially be without fullback Henry Hynoski (knee), defensive ends Jason Pierre-Paul (back) and Damontre Moore (shoulder), linebacker Dan Connor (neck), safety Tyler Sash (concussion) and, should he make the 53-man roster, wide receiver Ramses Barden (knee).
Finally, if the team opts to leave defensive tackle Markus Kuhn on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, they would, of course, be without him as well.
