As injuries continue to mount around the league, the New York Giants actually consider themselves lucky that wide receiver Victor Cruz, who was rewarded with a massive contract earlier this offseason, only suffered a heel bruise in Sunday's 20-12 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. And during a media conference call on Monday, head coach Tom Coughlin indicated that Cruz will be considered day-to-day.
“We’ll see where he stands with it as the days go by,” Tom Coughlin said Monday during a media conference call. “We’ll have to take that one as it comes.”
Cruz is not expected to return to practice with the team on Tuesday, and sources around the league have suggested he'll miss the remainder of the preseason as a precaution.
The downside to Cruz missing additional time is that the offense, which has clearly struggled to find rhythm in each of the first two preseason games, won't be able to work on their chemistry. Cruz had already missed the entirety of the team's offseason workout program, while fellow wide receiver, Hakeem Nicks, has missed a large amount of time dealing with his injuries.
“Any player, the concern is that any player that misses practices is missing the opportunity to experience things and instinctively react to things,” Coughlin said. “You don't get the opportunity to, through repetitions, learn in the multiplicity of things that can happen on any given play. … It’s important for everyone to understand that.”
With Cruz out, it will be interesting to see who steps up into his slot receiver role; it was Kevin Hardy on Sunday night, but fans can also expect to see Jerrel Jernigan and Julian Talley there throughout the week.
