Although a return to the New York Giants has not been ruled out, the likelihood is that defensive end Osi Umenyiora will need to find a new home once NFL free agency begins in March. And despite a few sub par years to closeout his tenure in the Big Apple, the two-time Pro Bowler is almost certainly going to land on his feet.
In fact, the Atlanta-Journal Constitution is reporting that the Atlanta Falcons have already had internal discussions about Umenyiora, and are expected to pursue both he and fellow free agent defensive end Dwight Freeney.
Although the interest is there, the Falcons will undoubtedly be very careful in any potential contract negotiations. After a $27.5 million, $11 million guaranteed contract with Ray Edwards came back to bite them in the rear-end, they will treat lightly and focus on closing a deal that has little long-term risk.
Teams can not officially begin negotiating until March 9th, and no deal can be signed until March 12th, but expect Umenyiora to be one of the first off the table.

I think he’s still a good player too. He’s got another two good years in him.
It’s too bad the salary cap prevents us from keeping him in blue for the duration, there is no doubt in my mind that there will come some times over the next two seasons where we look at our lineup and think “boy, it’d be really nice to have Osi in there right now”.
I’d prefer him in the AFC but anywhere outside the NFC East will do.
So the Chiefs will be adding Alex Smith (reportedly.) The good news for Chiefs fans is that they will not be wasting the #1 overall pick on a second round talent. The bad news is that their QB is Alex Smith.
He makes sense for Atlanta, though he and Abraham seem too much alike. Maybe a 3rd DE will rotate in so that only one of them is playing on run downs.
The 49ers are positioned to be front-runners in the NFC for the next 5-6 years. They will reportedly have 15 picks in this draft! Holy sh-t that’s scary.
With 15 picks you can swing like Cecil Fielder. Batting average doesn’t matter. You only need to hit home runs on a couple of them to look good.
Lets see how they do in the next 2 years. Kaepernick has 2 years left on his deal, if he is a franchise QB they’ll be paying up big time. They have a lot of 1st round picks on the line. Iupati and Anthony Davis will be up for new deals the same year as Kaepernick, Crabtree and Aldon Smith will be UFA as well. They’ll all be expensive. They’ve had an incredible run of good fortune on the injury front, I doubt that lasts. The Niners were up against the cap this past year and even with the Alex Smith trade they’re not swimming in tons of cap space. As we all know it’s really expensive to retain all of your quality players and losing teams with tons of cap space will overpay to get some of that winning mojo in their locker room.
What’s scary is they know what type of players to select with those picks.
I want Reese and his crew to get nasty this year and next year too.
The Chiefs are giving up the #34 overall pick, nearly a first rounder, plus a conditional late round pick and are letting Smith play out his final contract year at $8.3M
Sounds like a terrible idea to me. Best case scenario Smith plays well and you immediately have to give him a big contract based on the fact that his numbers are crazy good for the past few seasons (I contend it’s a mirage, but that’s another story).
Worst case scenario he plays like garbage and you let him go, having wasted the 34th overall pick in the draft on a one year rental of a mediocre QB on a bad team.
If they truly believe in the guy, they should sign him to a long term deal now. If they aren’t completely sold on him, they shouldn’t be throwing that high of a pick at him.
What a screwing … LOL. Hope we get to play the Chiefs often.

Thats scary.. How the hell did they stockpile so many picks and build such a great young roster. That is a very well run scouting department and front office. They are loaded and only going to get better.. The good news is they are one too many read options away from having nothing at the QB position.. I’m assuming they use one or more of those picks to trade for or draft a quality back up QB.

they absolutely could roll the dice on him and still have plenty of picks to use for this years needs.. He would be deadly in that Harbaugh system..
I agree. I think the best thing that could happen to Geno Smith is to be drafted into a situation like the one in SF. He gets to develop his talents, and SF gets a viable backup if Kaepernick gets clobbered.

Coupled with lousy on field performance for many years. They stunk … and kept drafting high. Then wham, it all came together.
Can you imagine Alex “Ultimate Game Manager” Smith running Andy Reid’s pass happy offense? Personally I think the 49ers absolutely fleeced the Chiefs. They are gonna be good for a long time barring Kaepernick getting turned into Terry Schiavo by the hits he’s bound to take.
I actualy think Smith will be very competent in Reids QB friendly offense. I mock him regularly on Facebook to my 49 friends as Alex Stiff, but Andy Reid has made much worse QB’s like Koy Detmer, AJ Feeley and Kevin Kolb into decent enough QB’s to get 2nd round picks out of them, even got a #2 for McScruubb at the end of his career. I think right now Alex Smith is better then any of those QB’s besides McNabb and is better than McNabb was when Reid traded him away. Smith will lea that team to 9-10 wins next year.
