Linebacker Chase Blackburn is slated to become an unrestricted free agent when the new league year rolls around in mid-March, but if the New York Giants have anything to say about it, that's not going to be the case.
Richard Katz, Blackburn's agent, told the New York Post on Friday that the team has contacted him expressing a desire to re-sign the veteran linebacker, but that they will continue to weigh their free agency options.
“The Giants have expressed a desire to re-sign Chase," Richard Katz, Blackburn’s agent, told The New York Post Friday. “We believe Chase has been very valuable to the club, both on and off the field. Right now we are assessing his dollar value to the Giants and reviewing all possible alternatives including the Giants.”
Re-signing Blackburn wouldn't guarantee him the starting job as the Giants may look to add more athleticism to the middle linebacker position this offseason. However, he is a favorite of the coaching staff for his knowledge of the defense, his hard work and never-say-die attitude, and would provide solid depth along with fellow MLB Mark Herzlich.
