Osi Umenyiora Says He Will Break Michael Strahan’s Single-Season Sack Record in 2013

'Aaron Rodgers, Osi Umenyiora' photo (c) 2012, Mike Morbeck - license: Osi Umenyiora still has no idea what team he'll be playing for in 2013, but that hasn't stopped him from making some pretty bold claims. On Thursday, the veteran defensive end tweeted that he intends to break Michael Strahan's single-season sack record of 22 1/2 sacks in 2013, and even challenged the future Hall of Famer to a little wager.

"I intend on breaking Strahan's sack record this season. [But] that's impossible playing in a rotation," Umenyiora tweeted, hinting that his time with the New York Giants is over.

Shortly after that proclamation, Chief Osi took it a step further, tweeting Strahan with a near guarantee that the sack record will soon be a thing of the past.

"Yes, Mike. That sack record is going down. Care for a friendly wager?" he tweeted.

Umenyiora recently had his contract with the Giants voided, and is slated to become an unrestricted free agent when the new league year begins on March 12th. And although he said there's "definitely a chance" he returns to the Giants, a scenario in which that happens seems highly unlikely – especially when you consider that he's looking to be a starter and for starter money.

In an interview recently conducted by "The Post Game," Umenyiora said rumors about his demise have been "greatly exaggerated," claiming he's got a lot of All-Pro level football left in him.

Osi has never been shy about making big claims or setting tremendous goals, but at 31 years of age and after nine long years in the NFL, these recent statements are quite bold. And if he does end up living up to them, we just hope it's not for an opposing NFC East team. Or the New York Jets.

In the past three seasons combined he barely has Strahans single season record broken so I don’t see that happening. Guess the Jets train of thinking is already getting to him.

  2. Hanshi says:

Oh boy we better sign him fast!

  3. Krow says:

Osi has personality … and he’s always been a good self-promoter. I’m sure he’ll get a substantial contract somewhere. Probably for money that will surprise us. And then he’ll disappoint them … either by performance or injury … and we’ll all nod our heads wisely that Reese let him walk.

Disclaimer … I like Osi, and wish we could resign him. But it’s just not going to happen because someone will overpay for him. The above statement assumes that.

Osi fully understands that there is a sucker born every minute.
One of those genotypes will sign him to a contract of his liking.

If not, he’ll be a “rotational” Giant at a cap friendly rate.
    Life is good.

  5. JimStoll says:

I think Osi will give some team 3 to 4 very productive years if allowed to start and he remains in good health
It won’t be for us but he is a good player
and Michael should take that bet

  6. Hanshi says:

Osi was one of my favorite defensive Giants up until 2 years ago but I really think he’s done as far as being a full time starter goes.

I still like the guy. He could be a solid contributor. But he’s over-valuing his worth. And that always leads to problems.
