It's impossible to hear of the horrific events that took place Friday morning at Sandy Hook Elementary School and not have some sort of emotional reaction. Just like all of us, the New York Giants are deeply saddened at the loss of 27 lives in one of the worst mass shootings in American history. Big Blue will honor the fallen in their game today with a helmet decal that reads "S.H.E.S." (Sandy Hook Elementary School).
It's a small gesture, but it's another way of letting the families of the victims know that people genuinely care about what happened to their loved ones. It's easy to forget that the freakishly athletic specimens that we watch play football every Sunday are, in fact, human. They are sons, fathers, and husbands as well. It's safe to say that the Giants will play their Week 15 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons with heavy hearts.
Each NFL game will begin with a moment of silence this weekend to further honor the tragic loss of life that took place in Newtown, Conn. Football is a historic, entertaining American game that plays a role in the lives of many. However, events like what took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School put into perspective just how irrelevant sports are in the grand scheme of things.
Enjoy the game today, but keep in mind all those who lost their lives in Newtown on Friday morning.
