Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin wasted no time revealing the status of both safety Troy Polamalu (calf) and offensive lineman Marcus Gilbert (ankle) on Tuesday, announcing that each player will be out on Sunday against the New York Giants.
For Polamalu, he will miss his fourth consecutive game, while Gilbert will be out for the third straight week.
Tomlin also remained unsure of his running back situation heading into Sunday, as Rashard Mendenhall (Achilles) was cleared for limited individual work, but is unlikely to practice until Thursday at the earliest.
For the Giants, the arrival of Hurricane Sandy has forced them to push their normal schedule back a day, so they will proceed as if they played on Monday night. They will not have practice until Wednesday following Tom Coughlin's press conference, with their first injury report coming shortly thereafter.
Giants 101 will update the statuses of Antrel Rolle, Chase Blackburn, Keith Rivers and Bear Pascoe as news becomes available.

I’ll see your Polamalu calf and raise you a Rivers calf
Ok, here’s the thing- Either Perry Fewell is not that good of a DC or we’re severely overrating our players. His tenure here has been marked with nothing but mediocrity and late game collapses. I really cannot justify this by saying we won a SB with him, I just can’t. The Ravens won a SB with a terrible offense, that doesn’t mean they had a good OC. Let’s take a closer look at what we’ve had since Fewell was here:
2010
16th in ppg allowed
7th in ypg allowed
Tied for 6th in ypp allowed with 7 other teams
39 turnovers
Epic collapse(s) when our season was on the line.
2011
25th in ppg allowed
27th in ypg allowed
23rd in ypp allowed
31 Turnovers
Absolutely horrible for most of the season, and only turned it around with the talk of him adjusting his scheme.
2012
8th in ppg allowed
24th in ypg allowed
30th in ypp allowed
24 Turnovers after 8 games.
Still proving time and time again that it’s very difficult to stop teams when absolutely needed.
How is this a good defense? Because it forces turnovers? Please…..Turnovers are one of the most hit or miss “stats” in the game. Injuries? Everyone has them. We have a defense that is horrible in some areas, mediocre in others, and great in only 1 area. Forcing turnovers.
We’re looking at a season full of shootout type games with a couple of better games against bad offenses mixed in. Remember when everyone says “Oh, that team is only winning because of all the turnovers”. Yeah, WE’RE that team.
Its the system bro.. Its not going to change and it will never be near the league lead in yardage allowed due to scheme. It is designed to cause a ton of turnovers and looks so much better with a ferocious pass rush. When the pass rush isn’t there it is very frustrating to watch. Again I HATE this type of scheme but it is where todays Flag Football NFL is trending. We see less and less Jim Johnson, Dick Lebeua, Steve Spagnoula type schemes and a lot more like this. We can cry and **** about it or just accept it and move on. Last year Green Bay and New England were historically bad defenses yet they were both an NYG **** whoopin from winning the Super Bowl. This system as annoying as it may be is also built for and much more effective in January football conditions as demonstrated during last years 6 week run that started on Christmas Eve
More importantly, Ryan Clark may miss this game with a concussion. Although, it seems the Giants are the only team that actually hold out concussed players anymore.
Polamalu isn’t the force he used to be. I think time, injuries, and the new rules against certain types of contact have pretty much finished him off.
Even so, if they’re down both starting safeties that is a big blow. They’ve had a lot of trouble on defense and along the offensive line this year, and the injuries are adding up for them.
Polamalu is/was severely over-rated…Good QBs easily make him look foolish with his reckless play!!! Unfortunately, there just aren’t a lot of good QBs
When I look at the collection of athletes we have on Defense, it really leaves me baffled as to how we can look so bad at times. Especially when we have a lead I feel like Fewell has no concept of down, distance, and personnel when he makes a lot of his calls. With that being said, I also feel that if Killdrive knew how to manage a game better we wouldn’t have to suffer through so many gut-wrenching, heart stopping, nail biters. When I think about Sunday’s game in particular, I feel like the defense did their job and our offense let them down. There’s no way a defense that forces 6 TOs should be on the field in the final seconds to secure a win. Y’all seem to forget that Dallas only had 19 rushing yds total and were completely out of sync for majority of the first half.
agreed.. If you force 6 turnovers and score a TD on Defense, there is no reason that game should even be close.. When JPP Scored to make it 23-0, it really should have been like 31-0 because at least 2 of those 4 trips to the red zone should have yielded TD’s.
Not only did our defense force 6 Turnovers but they scored the same amount of TD’s as our offense did, even with the 5 extra possessions the defense gave them thanks to turnovers……

I actually believe that when healthy Polamalu is still a difference maker.. He and Clark both missing the game would be HUGE for Eli and co. With Pitt already losing to Tennesse and Oakland on the road this year, I’m liking our chances..
I do give Kujo a ton of sh*t a lot of the time, but its good to know that someone actually takes the time to read my posts. I coined him Down Town Stevie Brown and expect royalties on all the T-shirts :-)
Ad who is this nubie Chad Eldred clown that always has some sh*t to say about me? Now that I’ve whipped Kujo and Krow into shape, he may become my new whipping boy…
I would wager I’ve been reading as long or longer than you, but if you would like you can dub me whatever makes you feel better. I look forward to whatever you call an **** whooping. I hope it is as ferociously awful as some of your recent game predictions.
LOL got to love Brandon Stokely..
Thomas scored a touchdown in the third quarter and tossed the ball to Decker, who stood under the goal post and was about to toss the ball back up in the air, where Thomas could grab it for an alley-oop dunk over the crossbar. But it’s a 15-yard penalty in the NFL for players to engage in coordinated touchdown celebrations, so when Stokley realized what Decker and Thomas were about to do, he ran behind Decker and stole the ball from him, cutting their celebration short.
The 36-year-old Stokley said the 25-year-old Decker and the 24-year-old Thomas were upset with him. But Stokley thinks part of the reason he’s on the Broncos is to be the mature one in the receiving corps.
“I mean, they were mad at me on the sideline for stopping them,” Stokley told Mike Klis of the Denver Post. “It’s tough being a dad sometimes, you know?”
Four years ago, Stokley did something similar when he stopped then-teammate Brandon Marshall from picking up a celebration penalty, and Stokley said he takes a little credit for helping to mentor Marshall, just as he’s now doing with Thomas and Decker.
“He’s doing great on his own,” Stokley said of Marshall. “Now, I’ve got these other two knuckleheads I’ve got to mold. These kids, nowadays. You’ve got to put them in timeout.”
And if putting them in timeout saves the Broncos 15 yards, Stokley is willing to be the bad guy. Which makes him a good leader.

a former Giant!!!
I’m not gonna get into an extended debate about the defense, but things simply aren’t as bad as some want to insist. For the umpteenth time, I despise the system with a passion and wish we played more aggressively at times, especially when we have a quarterback who starts making mistakes when under pressure (notice that almost all of Romo’s and Vick’s picks come under pressure….we seem to “get” that when Brady is under center so why not when others are as well?), but if we’re 8th in points against (someone stated that above) then I see no reason to complain a lot. Especially because we have just started to get “the Canty dividend” and we will soon see the return of Phillips, Williams, Bernard, and Rivers.
As for saying turnovers are essentially the luck of the draw, just remember that Perry Fewell built a consistent “turnover defense” in Buffalo when he had a lot less talent to work with than he does now. Some of it is luck. Plenty of it is design. I’m not a big fan of Fewell’s, but I think folks around here are going way overboard on the criticism.
we were 8th going into sunday; we are 12th now
my concern is that in the last 2 weeks we have surrendered the big play on the last offensive possession for our opponent, when we had the lead, the other team needed a TD and we knew exactly what was coming
You’re right about Fewell in Buffalo which was one of the reasons I had excitement when he arrived. He was known for disguising coverages and ball-hawking secondary play. Buffalo was at or near the top of the league in INT’s when he was there. Credit where credit is due, I don’t think that the interceptions this year are all luck. I never said the guy doesn’t know defense, I’m just nauseated by the approach he chooses. Maybe Demo is right and I’m a dinosaur like the old time DC’s but I would rather die being aggressive than have to rely on the length of Dez Bryant’s middle finger to bail me out.
Actually I believe all of Vicks interceptions have come from 4 men or less rushing the passer
