We never take NFL Power Rankings very seriously, especially during the first few weeks of the season, but now that teams have started to show what they're made of, we figured it's time to glance around the web and see what the power rankers think of the New York Giants.

The fact that they're coming off a blistering beatdown of one of the league's best teams didn't hurt our decision, either. This week's theme: cracking the top three, baby!

This week's rank: 3
Last week's rank: 7
Their comment: Their victory in San Francisco was the best game any team in the league has played against any other.
Our comment: Yes, it was. Booyah!
CBSsports.com
This week's rank: 5
Last week's rank: 7
Their comment: That was a statement game against San Francisco. They got back to their identity on defense with that suffocating pass rush.
Our comment: Really, CBS? You're putting Eli Manning's Giants, after their best two games of the season, behind Jay Cutler's Chicago Bears and a Baltimore Ravens team that just lost Ray Lewis and Lardarius Webb? Whatever you say, Prisco.
Profootballtalk.com
This week's rank: 3
Last week's rank:7
Their comment: The Giants play down to the level of competition, and they play up to the level of competition.
Our comment: We're not going to argue with the Atlanta Falcons because they are 6-0, but again with the Ravens. It's all good, we get a chance to handle that one ourselves in Week 16.
Foxsports.com
This week's rank: 5
Last week's rank: 7
Their comment: The Giants' win at San Francisco was the most impressive of the weekend, maybe even this season. The Giants absolutely dominated the 49ers, racking up 342 yards against a defense that was only giving up an average of 262 coming in.
Our comment: Again, agree with the comment…but not the ranking.
Overall, it looks like the Giants are starting get respect as one of the league's elite teams, in the top five all around and even cracking the top three. See you next week, as we try to move up the ladder. Watch out, Atlanta.

The last thread got me thinking about cap space and dead money, given that we’re going to have to pay KP and Nicks sometime really soon. So I went over to take a look at who’s using all of our cap space, and found something: David Carr is on the books for $10 million this year. TEN MILLION DOLLARS. He’s the most expensive guy on the roster besides Eli. It’s a one-year contract, so it’s not like we’re on the tail end of a big money deal; someone decided that it was more important to pay him 4x the going rate for backup QBs than it was to keep Mario or Jacobs, or resign KP or Beatty this year, or extend Bennett or Rivers before they have full-season numbers under their belt as bargaining chips.
Am I missing something, or is this the dumbest thing Reese has ever done?
That has to be a mistake. he only gets paid about $1,000,000, so no way he is that big a cap hit. Look again.
ff55′s gotta be right here. Carr’s contract is < $1MM. Just no way it's a $10MM cap hit.
Sir i must ask you not to question the great jerry reese violaters will be charged with treason and shot thanks have a great day :)
Seriously tho how much would have been dead money??
I’m perfectly happy with the Giants still being ranked behind several other teams. Every Giants fan should know they feed off of disrespect, and every time the general consensus is that the Giants are the best team in the NFL, they go out and disappoint. I’m just hoping the Giants don’t peak too early. IMO, this team would be best off if they win their next few games, then get humbled for a week or 2 so they don’t let it all get to their heads. As long as that humbling doesn’t come against Washington or Dallas.
Power rankings this early in the season are not only meaningless, but based on too few games and are made prior to many of the adjustments in personnel, schemes, and general approaches that teams are starting to implement now. Whatever they’re worth except as nice conversation pieces, that worth becomes more real come November.
I started the season saying the Giants, Packers, Niners and Bears were the class of the NFC and the Pats, Texans and Ravens were the class of the AFC. I guess I should have had more faith in Peyton’s comeback, and shouldn’t be so quick to dismiss the Falcons as legit. Right now no one can predict what will happen in the AFC. Hell, the Jets could reach the Super Bowl. The Dolphins certainly could. But I still think it comes down to the Texans beating the Patriots in the AFC Championship game and then losing to the Giants in the Super Bowl.
But it sure would be fantastic having the Broncos square off against the Giants in the Manning Bowl in February in New Orleans.
In fact, if the NFL really were a “manipulated” league where the league office tells the officials what kind of outcomes they’d like (it isn’t that, much as we may sometimes wonder) they would make sure that a Giants-Broncos Super Bowl occurred this year.
We’d see two weeks of the Manning family in New Orleans, perhaps Eli and Peyton sleeping in their childhood bedrooms and having dinner together and being interviewed together saying how much they love and admire each other but will be at war on Super Bowl Sunday, the dueling Mannings making dinner reservations for their entire teams at their favorite haunts in town the night after their counterparts were there, stories from neighbors and teachers about “those two great kids” when they were growing up. The league, and the networks, would be in heaven, and the ratings for the game would set an all-time record that might never be topped.
What a spectacle the whole thing would be. I am now officially hoping for that while thinking it is far from out-of-the-question.
There is NO WAY Jernigan gets cut once Canty/Hill return. You’ll recall JR’s quote about Barden and how you have to give players a chance to fail. They will not jettison Jernigan without giving him a chance.
I think the sleeper cut as briefly mentioned is Sash. I think he could be cut for Canty if KP is ready when Canty is activated. Sash not playing a role on defense after Hill or Brown did in previous week’s shows his star has lessened. As a 5th safety he would be kept around for much the same reason as Tryon. I think Tryon is more important on special teams because he’s a gunner and a 5th CB is more likely to be need on defense than a 5th safety. We could wait another week to activate Canty and by then KP has a good shot to be ready. This then would make Sash expendable. This would give us another few weeks to evaluate the roster and make a decision on who we cut for Hill.
I think the decision for who Hill replaces will be based on where our injuries lie. I still think our positions of least need on our roster are Ojomo, Scott, Austin (when Canty returns) and Robinson. Austin and Robinson are clearly going nowhere. So it comes down to Ojomo and Scott. Ojomo is less needed currently than Scott due to Kiwi also being a presence at DE should something happen. It comes down to how JR/TC feel about the long term prospects of Ojomo and can he just be cut and signed to the PS.
Why in God’s name would they “delay” activating Canty if he has a good week of practice?
That simply ain’t gonna happen. If Canty CAN play, he WILL play. They’re not going to protect the #52 or #53 guy on the roster while not playing their best defensive tackle in a game they need to win. Think man, think.
I’m not saying that they would delay Canty for that reason. I think like Sash that Canty could be delayed just because they won’t him to get more reps to before they feel confortable activating him. Remember Canty hasn’t played any football since the SB and that includes practice. I didn’t mean that we would delay activating Canty to make the cutting decision easier. I think it’s one of those situations that could work out.
I agree. I think Sash is at risk. He played “0″ snaps on defense on Sunday. All snaps came on ST.
I think Ojomo is the most likely candidate though as he still has practice squad eligibility.
But Sash had only been practicing for a week. I wouldn’t conclude much from Sunday’s game as to their view of Sash.
It’s not just that. I’m looking at the depth chart and after Rolle and KP, I think Hill and Brown have played better thus far this year than Sash has ever played for us.
Maybe, but the coaches were pretty high on Sash by the end of last season, and he was the reason they didn’t bring back Grant. At the time they decided to let Deon go they had no idea what they would get in Hill and Brown.
Now, I think Hill is a total stud-in-the-making. He’s big, he’s fast, and he’s instinctive. And I like Brown (although I am not going to ignore that he has blown two assignments this season that cost us a TD and a long gainer because he made bad decisions). But I find it hard to believe that based on some pretty good play this season and an impressive camp that Brown will easily displace Sash. I suspect they will try to carry five safeties. But we’ll see soon enough, and I really don’t claim to have a solid idea as to what they will do.
I’ve said what I would do: cut Scott immediately, and then wait until KP returns and either IR someone if that’s possible or cut one of Bernard or Kuhn (the second going to the practice squad).
The Giants play down to the level of competition, and they play up to the level of competition. Profootballtalk is absolutely right. I personally don’t care where anyone ranks the Giants as long as they’re hoisting the Lombardi at the end of the day. But until the Giants show some consistency and win some home games, the pundits will continue to be dubious.
I think our squad has a ton of talent. I’m not worried about peaking too soon, I’m just want to have a healthy team come the closing stretch of the season if not sooner. I think if our OL is going to play as it has thus far, it’s scary for the rest of the NFL how good we can be. I don’t think the SF game is the best football this team is capable of playing. We have a core of young players that are improving game by game. Prince, Hosley, Wilson, Randle, Hill, Tracy amonst others are players I expect can be real difference makers by year-end if they are not already.
Annnnd here we go …

Also, #NYG announce RB Da’Rel Scott had a right knee “debridement” procedure yesterday to repair meniscus. Status unclear right now
If they get away with this more power to them. It makes me laugh. At least I had the right guy all along.
Nine players on injury report: Newcomers are Bradshaw (foot), Da’Rel Scott (knee) and Jacquian Williams (knee).
Otherwise it’s the usual players: Rocky Bernard (quad), Michael Boley (hip), Andre Brown (concussion), Hakeem Nicks (knee/foot), Kenny Phillips (knee) and Corey Webster (hamstring).
