New York Giants’ Antrel Rolle Named NFC Defensive Player of the Week

Following what may have been his best performance as a member of the New York Giants, safety Antrel Rolle has been named the NFC Defensive Player of Week. He is the first Giants safety to win the award since Percy Ellsworth in Week 16 of the 1998 season, and the first defensive back to win the award since Aaron Ross in Week 8 of the 2008 season.

In a 26-3 victory over the San Francisco 49ers, Rolle had six tackles, one stuff, two passes defended and two interceptions which be brought back for 42 yards. Following each of his interceptions, the Giants' offense was able to capitalize and put points on the board.

During his time with the Arizona Cardinals, Rolle was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week three times, including twice in 2007.

In addition to Rolle, running back Ahmad Bradshaw has been nominated for the FedEx Ground Player of the Week. You can vote for him here.

FF55 mentioned this in this last update, and I thought I’d follow up.

I am EXTREMELY disappointed in Jacquian this season. Last year (and I think you and I discussed this, FF55), I was saying how I thought the kid was on his way to being one of the best linebackers in the league. He seemed to be making plays all over the field, and at crucial times, too (the game he had in Philly last year was especially outstanding).

This year, though, it’s like he’s invisible. I don’t even think I remember seeing him make a tackle. Not sure what’s going on with the kid, but I hope he turns it around. I still have high hopes for him.

Good read. I just feel like he hasn’t made plays consistently enough this season. Either that, or he’s been doing it quietly without me seeing it.

        Good link.

Williams’ problem though has been a combination of missed tackles and confused reads. He has seemed not to be as aggressive as he was last year. The kid has loads of talent, and I still think he’ll be very good, but his progress is not what I’d hoped. Like I said, I think he has regressed. I’m by no means giving up on him. I think he is one of those players who will improve over the course of the season, and I cannot get too worried about players this early. If he isn’t doing better by the time we play the Steelers I’ll start to get concerned.

In Williams, Rivers, Boley and Paysinger we’ve got some linebackers who are ready-made to combat the offenses being run by most teams now. You have to have speed at linebacker, especially on the outside. We have it.

It’s possible Williams is just taking a step back this year due to having more put on his plate.

Last year he was just flying around the field like a maniac. That can lead to some big plays, even if they’re not for the right reasons (think Stevie Brown’s “oops” interception). Right now, he may have higher expectations being put on him to actually know the defense and carry more complicated responsibilities. Too much thinking leads to hesitation, which leads to bad things on the field.

So let’s give him a little while and see what happens. Maybe once he “gets it” we’ll see the playmaker start showing up again.

Rolle certainly deserved this recognition. He has played extremely well for us while taking gas from plenty of fans. Excellent player and a leader on the field and in the locker room. He gets a LOT of credit from me for his motivating a downtrodden team last season and having a HUGE influence on getting that trophy.

I’m curious to hear what record you all think the Giants will finish with this season.

    My money is on 11-5.

    • kinsho says:

12-4 to a #2 spot in the NFC playoffs

      • Valid says:

Yeah I think 12 wins is our absolute max. Could definitely see it happening. I’m just thinking that we’ll probably lay an egg sometime along the way and end up losing that one game simply because we came out flat.

Good to see Andre Brown practicing. If Bradshaw’s limited, Andre Brown is definitely more than just a servicable replacement in the backfield.

    • Valid says:

Plus, the prospect of a Bradshaw/Wilson/Brown trio is just…wow.

      • giantsfan says:

Yeah but the third member rarely get anything over 2-3 carries a game, IF even that many.

You guys think Wilson will keep his role of primary backup? Or will Brown regain that role?

        • F0XLIN says:

I think Brown would return to primary back up with Wilson keeping his set plays with his snap count increasing weekly

        • Valid says:

Well, Bradshaw was getting a hair under 5 a game during the EWF year of 2008. Still, it’s just the mere luxury/threat of having three capable halfbacks on your team.

  5. giantsfan says:

In regards to my last comment about the “designated for return” injured reserve list, I was wrong. Each team is allowed ONE player for that designation. My fault. I was mislead by the term “list.” Apparently, it’s a list meaning NFL’s list for all 32 teams. Not an individual list for each team. My bad.

  6. demo3356 says:

Wow, Emperor Norton needs to put down the crack pipe.. Did dude really just say that Reese signed Carr to a 10 million dollar deal last off season? Carr is on the books for $925,000..
I think this team is a 10-6 or 11-5 team that will make noise in the post season. Schedule is brutal and we don’t want them to peak too early.

  7. GOAT56 says:

I’m shocked Nicks is practicing. Maybe his issue was timing more than his health but the plan has never been to practice on Weds.

  8. fanfor55years says:

I had the Giants with 10-11 wins at the beginning of the season and said the odds of 12 were far greater than the odds of 9. I haven’t seen enough yet to be any more definitive than that.

  9. Valid says:

Canty’s quote just put a pretty big damper on my day…damn.

  10. GOAT56 says:

Chris Canty: “[I've got] a long ways to go before I can contribute to this football team.”

    • GOAT56 says:

I hoped for better but it’s not surprising. Canty hasn’t even practiced for 8 months. I still think he’s active by the Dallas game. He at least sounds healthy but just rusty.

      • giantsfan says:

Oh that’s strange. He sounded so optimistic last week.

        • GOAT56 says:

He hadn’t played football. I take it as he’s healthy but after getting back on the field he sees just how rusty he is. I bet he expected to not be rusty or not as rusty as he felt.
