Giants’ Jacquian Williams Likely Out Sunday & More from an Afternoon Tea with Tom Coughlin

Following a huge win over the San Francisco 49ers, New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin arrived at the podium on Wednesday is a fantastic mood. And rightfully so. But, as Coughlin would say himself, last week is over and week seven is now upon us. It's time to look forward to a meeting with the Washington Redskins, who Coughlin called a "dangerous" team.

Per the usual, questions focused a bit on injuries to start the day. And with that, we have the pre-practice injury report which includes a few new names and some old faces. They are Ahmad Bradshaw (foot), Da'Rel Scott (knee), Jacquian Williams (knee), Rocky Bernard (quad), Andre Brown (concussion), Michael Boley (hip), Hakeem Nicks (knee/foot), Corey Webster (hand/hamstring) and Kenny Phillips (knee).

Scott's addition is the most notable because the team announced he had arthroscopic knee surgery (a debridement) to repair a meniscus tear in his right knee on Tuesday. He will likely head to temporary Injured Reserve (IR), opening up a roster spot for Chris Canty … although Coughlin just says "we'll see."

There is also bad news for linebacker Jacquian Williams, who Coughlin says will not practice this week and is likely out on Sunday.

"Certainly we'll miss him," Coughlin said.

In addition to Williams, other who will not practice today include: Bradshaw, Bernard, Scott, Nicks and Phillips.

"He's making progress, but he's not ready to go," Coughlin said of Phillips.

Meanwhile, Coughlin said Nicks made it out of the 49ers game "okay," but would not answer any questions about reoccurring swelling in the wide receivers knee. He also said Bradshaw's foot injury is the "same type" of injury he suffered last year, although he's hoping it won't result in a once-per-week practice schedule as it did a season ago.

For Chris Canty, the defensive tackle will practice today. But will he play this weekend? "We'll see," said the coach. The same could be said about running back Andre Brown – although he has finally passed his concussion test(s) and is cleared to return to practice.

And finally, there were actually a few comments on the Redskins.

Coughlin pointed out that they're a high scoring offense, good against the run and have a tremendous return game. He pointed out Brandon Banks and Robert Griffin III as players to keep an eye on, and players Big Blue's defense/special teams will have to slow down in order to win on Sunday.

"There's a lot to have to defend," he said of Washington.

    Sooooo… Bradshaw has a “foot.”

Wow, who could have ever seen that one coming?

  2. TuckThis says:

Did anyone mention that our very own Antrelle Rolle was named Defensive Player of the Week? Well, someone damn well should! Congrats, Antrelle. Keep up the good work.

  3. Krow says:

“So Da’rel … that knee procedure we’ve been putting off till after the season … we think that now would be a good time to have it taken care of. Course you’ll have to go on IR, but you’ll still get paid your full $465,000 salary plus any playoff bonuses.”

“No coach, I’m fine … I ice it up. No problem. I’ll have it done in the off-season.”

“OK, then we’re going to cut you. Here … this is the employment form from Piggly Wiggly … fill it out in triplicate.”

“Ummmmn what time did you say that surgery was scheduled for?”

    • fanfor55years says:

      Precisely.

    • G-MenFan says:

LOL. I was just talking about this with one of my sons yesterday, only it went:

“Da’rel, go see the trainer, your foot hurts.”
      “It does?”
“Yeah. Real bad. Might need surgery.”

  4. fanfor55years says:

Bradshaw’s foot is exactly why having Andre Brown back is so important. Forget about which of them is “better”. Doesn’t matter. We need to maintain a combination of a primary running back who can be productive (and both of Bradshaw and Brown can be that) and Wilson, who can be deadly late in games when the defense is just a half-step slower because of the pounding our offensive line, tight end, and fullback have given them.

Brown’s revelation of the talent some of us always knew he possessed will prove to be a BIG factor over the course of this season, and seasons to come.

  5. GOAT56 says:

Look I’m a Scott fan as I have mentioned many times. I’m a Terp grad so maybe that does influence me but I ready think his speed can really be an asset our team. That said if Scott undergoes a surgery that lands him on IR, I think it should be the regular IR. I know it’s getting later in the season but to me you don’t use the new IR rule on a player like Scott, he’s just not important enough. Someone more important could get injured in the next few weeks so I rather have the new IR open should it happen. Scott right now if everyone is healthy likely won’t be active anyways.

That leads me to Benard. What’s his deal? At first I assumed his injury was minor but he hasn’t even been on the side since he got injured. If his injury is still one that’s weeks away I wonder if he could possibly fit the new IR designation.

Williams is another player I like but with Boley, Rivers and Paysinger all healthy his absence is a minor one.

    • giantsfan says:

I believe you are only allowed to bring back one player, but they have to be on that designated list. So putting Scott on that list has no downside, as you do NOT have to re-activate him.

      • Krow says:

Is that how it works? Then why even have the other list?

      • GOAT56 says:

That’s if another player doesn’t get injured. i know like Beckum he wouldn;t have to be brought back but that’s not my point. My point is that what if another more important player gets injured vs Washington or Dallas then either we have to hold a roster spot for that player or we have to put that player on IR. The new IR rule only can be used for one player so I rather have it was a safe haven for an injury even if it goes unused.

        • fanfor55years says:

I think Scott is useless but even if I thought he had a future with us I’d completely agree that you don’t waste your designation on him. You hold it for use if an important player goes down but could be available for the stretch run and/or the playoffs.

  6. fanfor55years says:

Frankly, I have thought Jacquian Williams regressed badly this season. He joined Corey Webster, Justin Tuck, Jason Pierre-Paul and a few others on defense who I thought had simply started the season poorly for whatever reason. I think JPP, Tuck and Osi showed real signs of “coming out of it” in San Francisco (JPP, obviously, came way out of any slump in that game). I thought Webster played better, although still not up to last year’s standards. I saw Linval Joseph really step up his game to where most of us expected it to be starting Week 1. But I still haven’t seen much from Williams. Perhaps if he hadn’t been hurt and got to play more he would have also looked better. But right now, I’m very excited knowing Keith Rivers will play and have no problem going into this game assuming Rivers, Boley, Blackburn and Paysinger will carry most of the load.

    • Krow says:

Which leads me to Herzlich … what’s going on … why so few snaps?

      • fanfor55years says:

I just think they trust Chase and are content to have Herzlich absorbing everything while getting ready if needed and ready to compete for the job next year.

There is, though, a better chance for him to see the field now if Fewell sticks with using Kiwi as a defensive lineman because presumably Herzlich could also play SAM in running situations.

  7. Krow says:

Anyone else questioning the wisdom of giving Bradshaw so many carries?

    • GOAT56 says:

I already did yesterday before I knew about this injury. It’s not like anyone should be surprised. But hopefully this is minor and going forward we will spread he carries out much better.

    • Levito says:

I was questioning it after the Cleveland game.

  8. jfunk says:

If Brown has any further injury this season, or a particularly tough time getting back from this concussion, I think we need THREE new RBs next year.

Bradshaw’s done (unless he takes pocket change to be the third back) and Scott is terrible. Wilson needs a complementary back to do the heavy lifting. That could be Brown, but not if he can’t stay on the field.

    • fanfor55years says:

I don’t understand your last sentence. He has had one concussion. Let’s start worrying if he has another. Until then, he’s a perfectly fine running back who produced big time when called upon.

And I wouldn’t be so quick to write off Bradshaw either. The guy has proved he can play hurt. You cannot count on him to play an entire season if you’re going to give him this many carries, but he is still a pretty decent NFL back. He may have to give some money back but I think they’ll want to keep him.

      • Krow says:

Yeah. I was thinking Bradshaw was done. It seriously looked like he’d hit that steep decline RBs are prone to having. But what can you say after the 2 games he’s just had. If he keeps playing at this level then he’s not going anywhere.

  9. JimStoll says:

    what’s the deal with Rivers?
is he going to be healthy enough to play a lot on sunday
I only remember seeing him 1x last week and it was at the end of the game
we really need him this week with Williams down

of course, Paysinger may take over from everyone
