Solid Night by New York Giants’ Ramses Barden Overshadowed by Pass Interference

By Paul Tierney

The New York Giants lost a tough game to a solid Philadelphia Eagles team on the road last night. It was a devastating loss because the Giants are now 0-2 in the division, which could potentially come back to haunt them in the even of a tie-breaking scenario at the end of the season. However it wasn't all bad last night.

Giants wide receiver Ramses Barden continued showcasing his effectiveness throughout the game. Although Barden only caught two balls for 36 yards, he drew two big pass interference calls on the Eagles at the end of the game. He proved to be a viable target through the air for the Giants for the duration of the game. However, Barden night was defined by an offensive pass interference call the knocked Lawrence Tynes out of field goals range, which cost the Giants the game.

“It was tough. I don’t know. I’ve got to go watch the play,” Barden said. “He had decent position. I’m trying to make a play. I guess I got my arm on him. I was trying to get to the ball, I was trying to break up an interception. I want to be the one to make a play, and nobody else. Nobody on defense, at least.’’

Eli Manning threw a ball up to his 6'6" wideout in single coverage in an attempt to guarantee a Giants victory. It was a risky, yet potentially beneficial proposition that did not work out. The ball was overthrown, Barden had no choice but to make sure Eagles' corner Nmamdi Asomugha didn't intercept it.

After the game, Eli Manning didn't regret the decision, as much as he regretted the poor throw he made to the Giants young wideout.

"I should’ve thrown a better ball or a different ball and not put Ramses in that situation with the defense over the top of him,” said Manning. “I probably shouldn’t have thrown it where I did so he was put in that situation where he has to pass interference so the ball’s not intercepted.”

The Giants had the ball with under two minutes left and all they needed was a field goal to win. They were playing a road game, shorthanded against a good football team. Eli Manning and Co. did not have enough to get it done last night, but it's not time to panic yet. It's a long season, and this team has the ability to play with anybody. Needless to say, next weekend against the Cleveland Browns is a huge matchup.

Uh, one of the PI calls on Nnamdi was really on Barden, he dropped a crucial ball on the last drive, and he had 36 yards in receptions. Oh, and he made a numbskull play for which Eli’s taking the bullet like any great quarterback and leader would. That’s a good game? Gimme a break. Write about Hixon’s game, or Prince’s, or Hill’s, or Wilson’s returns. But don’t tell me Barden had a good game “overshadowed” by the play that broke our back. He had a, at best, mediocre game that was entirely negated by that last play. Those guys in the locker room know the truth, and Eli just gained even greater love from his receiving corps. But they all know what really happened.

Coughlin and Manning are the leaders of this team. They stand up and take the blame like men should. Barden is already weaseling out of responsibility now that Eli gave him cover. Anyone who buys that must have ALREADY bought the brooklyn bridge sight-unseen.

Barden wasn’t all that bad. He did kind of blind Nnamdi, which is always a positive in my book.

But yeah, he didn’t have a great game. He had a huge game against the Panthers in part due to the fact that all the Panthers defensive backs opted to dry hump Cruz instead.

I think you are being overly hard on Barden. I think he did have a good game. Hixon’s was better, that’s fair. But that PI we drew on 4th down was huge vs their best CB. He did drop that pass which was his worse play IMO. That last play was on Eli, the last thing Barden can allow is an interception. Where tha pass was thrown what was Barden suppose to do? I can only imagine the respeonse if NA had intercepted that ball. The PI was only 10 yards and it still allowed us other opportunities to move back into closer FG range. I thought Hixon while productive left several plays on the field.

Everybody has a hand in this loss, even Eli. But the lion’s share of the blame goes to our defensive line. This game was going to be decided between the Eagles offensive line and our defensive line and our line lost the battle, even though they scored a number of hits on Vick. The fact that Vick did not even turn the ball over once is the glaring stat that should stick out here.

If the Eagles start turning the ball over again against the Steelers next week, then that means that A) not much has changed with Vick and B) our line simply couldn’t force a turnover.

Start rotating in Adrian Tracy and Adewale Ojomo next week against the Browns. And hell, let Kiwanuka see some snaps as a defensive end.

I think with Wilson my only issue is not using him when we clearly need a spark. Forget about if he deserves playing time or not. I think in game 1 and this game our offense needed a spark and I think using Wilson for a few plays would have been a good idea. I have no problem with Wilson sitting if someone is rolling like with Brown in games 2 and 3. I though TC/KG did a bad job of not letting Brown get a flow. Give him a series and don’t spot him here and there. Also, at worse he should be our short yardage and 3rd down back.

To be fair I though Bradshaw looked good early but then faltered. I think he’s getting too many snaps. He seems to work best splitting series. If we are going to start him give Brown every 3rd series.

Wilson needs to be given some Meggett or Tiki type plays. I like he play call that Wilson dropped. But I agree that’s not reason to completely remove him from the offense. We need production out of the RBs so if Bradshaw and/or Brown are getting it down I’m fine with Wilson riding the pine. But when they are not Wilson needs to get a shot. Maybe motion him out and have hit run a pattern. Or use him as a decoy. But he should get more snaps when our top 2 are struggling like they were.

    • Willy Wonka says:

How were his returns not a spark for the offense? The first time his # was called he lost focus, and after his fumble last time at rb any lack of focus at that position is gonna set you back. He more than made up for it and provided great spark and a short field in our return game. On that lat KO I swear I thought he was gonna break one Desean Jackson style for us, after that first kickoff return you just knew that he was going to be electric in that role this game

      • GOAT56 says:

He was a spark via special teams. I’m saying he can also be a spark from the line of scrimage. I’m not saying Wilson is at fault. I’m actually, blaming the coaches for not giving him more chances on offense when we were struggling.

        • Willy Wonka says:

Okay, I thought you were saying he didn’t providethe spark at all. I understand the coaches perspective in that they aren’t gonna let the kid’s lack of focus cost them a game. I think he will get worked in but he needs to take his first opportunity and run with it when they give it to him, he showed lack of focus taking his eye off the ball on that first play so they said okay this kid’s head isn’t in the game. Now, did he probably earn himself another shot next week based off his special team performance? yes. When he is ready will he provide a spark for the offense? yes. I also understand the frustration by the fans, but wait until week 8 and I would venture to guess his role will start to dramatically expand (this is just a theory I don’t know coughlin obviously)

    • kinsho says:

David Wilson is a MONSTER punt returner. I see him elevating our special teams to Super Bowl level if he remains as the punt returner.

And I do agree with letting him run with the ball from time to time, but we already have two good backs. Bradshaw did put up numbers against the Eagles defense. No, those numbers weren’t impressive, but they were enough to fool the Eagles on a couple play-action scenarios that opened up the deep ball for us.

Andre Brown didn’t do much, but I see him more as the physical back we so desperately need in goal-line situations and third-down short yardage conversions anyway. We didn’t have that many goal-line situations or short yardage conversion situations yesterday, from what I remember.

      • GOAT56 says:

I don’t know if we have 2 good backs. Really, Bradshaw hasn’t done much this year. And Brown while he’s been good, it’s only 2 games. I’m not saying Wilson deserves a chance, I’m saying when the running game is struggling it’s on the coaches to use Wilson to help.

That 3rd and 1 when we ended up converting on 4th down is the situation Brown should be used. He was in the game but then after the TO Bradshaw was in. I also, don’t think Bradshaw provides much as a pass catcher so I prefer Brown as a 3rd down back.

  4. Willy Wonka says:

This game was pretty close to what i expected it to be a bare knuckle brawl. I expected us to be able to put pressure a little more consistently and force a turnover to win the game but we didn’t. Prior to the season (albeit not on here) i said that i fully expect the entire nfc east to split. We need to get healthy, getting canty, nicks, hosley, and phillips all back is crucial. Oh, and I think David Wilson found his role on this team, (sorry but if he wants to get touches at rb he has to set the tone on the first play and go from their in these games any sign of a lack of focus will get him benched) but i love how he recovered from that and gave us a serious threat in our kickoff return game, THAT is how you get coaches to forget about your yips.

  5. F0XLIN says:

If anything Barden proved to me this week exactly what I said last week. He can not do much more than use his body to block out on a slant assuming there is not a half decent press corner on him.

  6. GOAT56 says:

Looking at the schedule I think we need to at least get to 5-3 by the half way point. I thought that before the year and still think that’s a good first half everything considered. That means we will have to win vs the Brwons and Redskins at home and win one on the road against SF or Dal. Something we are clearly capable of doing. I think any game we play without Nicks we are in danger of losing. While we have other guys in Hixon and Barden that can get it down the defense doesn’t respect them and will look to take Cruz away. That means to be sucessful Hixon or Barden will continue to need big games. Even Hixon hasn’t proven he can consitently produce over the long haul and Barden certainly hasn’t. The defense hasn’t played like many of us has hoped. This team still is too much on Eli’s shoulders’ and him playing just good is not good enough.

The defense shows flashes but has yet to put it together for several games in a row. But I think that’s a large part to missing important pieces. We hopefully will get KP back in a few weeks. We should see Hosley and Rivers return soon. But the key cog returning in a few weeks is Canty. With him he go from lack of depth at DT to good depth. We also get more consistent 4 quarter pressure from the middle which should help the DEs.

When they have played Hosley and Prince have been very good. They have beem easily our best 2 CBs. With them healthy our defense is much better. Rivers has been very good when healthy. Brown and Hill have looked good in spot roles. So I think there is plenty of reason to hope this unit can develop into a top defensive unit come the second half of the year.

The OL vs probably the best pass rush they will see held up pretty well. If they protect Eli this offense will produce enough points. I think for our offense the key will be getting our carries to 23-25 range. We just need to keep the defense honest and produce above 4.0 yards a carry.

I just read most of the posts on here and although I agree with a lot of what was said, there is not enough bitching about the coaching and Eli throwing away 2 scores that would have won the game. The int. in the end zone was a pass that shouldn’t have been thrown and the pass that Barden got called for PI was also a pass that shouldn’t be thrown. According to Coughlin in his post game interview there were other options on that play and Eli chose to throw to Barden who was covered like a blanket.
As for the play caling on offense Killdrive still can’t get it done in the Red Zone especially inside the 10. It seems to me that short passes over the middle was open almost all night.
The defense as what is beoming a bad pattern how many possessions
did the Eagles have to punt on after they scored the TD at the end of the 1st half? I don’t remember. . Maybe 1 or maybe none . They couldn’t stop the cut back runs and Osi stunk out the plac by not staying home. Where was the LB on that side of the field?
As far as I’m concerned Osi is no good against the run and Kiwi should be a DE he can’t cover anyone on pass plays. Fewell seems to get burned in 2nd half’s s because when they loose t games the D disapear’s in the 2nd half
Terrible play calling on bothe sides of the ball.

  8. fanfor55years says:

Barden has yet to prove he can be productive against anyone but a 5th-round drafted rookie corner when another receiver is getting doubled all game and Eli has all day in the pocket so Ramses can finish off his slow-developing routes.

That’s a FACT. Anyone can deny it, but that anyone would be wrong. Look, I hope I’m wrong about this guy. But I don’t think so.

    • GOAT56 says:

He beat DRC and NA several times in the 4th quarter. Look, I know Barden isn’t Plax. But I think he’s providing more than you’re giving him credit. He might have limited speed but he was getting open and forcing PI’s vs two high level CBs in crunch time.

  9. jahmyrr says:

Maybe we shouldnt be point fingers directly but my fingers are firmly pointed at the D-Line, Eli Manning, and Coughlin and staff for this loss.

    1. D-Line faded drastically and couldnt contain Vick or McCoy at all in the second half. Granted they held what easily could have been TDs to FGs. But they shouldnt have gotten that close. We made turnover machine Vick look like he hasnt had a problem all year. We made a the left side of a make shift O-Line look like a stud crew. This is a team that could barely beat the Browns (who we play next) for Gods sake.

    2. Eli (while still a great QB) made a few stupid plays. That endzone INT in the 4th quarter should have been points. There was no excuse to throw that easy pick at that time. We had Brown who was beasting last week hardly see the ball tonight. No excuse not to have him beasting (or attempting to) that close to the goal line.

    3. NO WAY should we have been taking deep shots at the end of the game already in FG position. We got greedy. We should have played that much more conservative knowing we were already in FG position. Granted not a gimmie FG by any means, but nothing we needed to take a shot at the endzone on. Eli threw a bad ball, Gilbride made a bad call.

    4. No reason to take that FG shot on 3rd down. Again, its no guarantee we would have gotten yards, but we should have made an attempt to get the ball a few yards closer. Knowing what Tynes career distance was, we should have at least attempted to get a few extra yards. Even if we throw the ball away or throw incomplete to the sideline, the attempt should have been made. Even more so when Tynes shanked the first one before the timeout was called.

Yeah yeah its all woulda coulda shouldas but I just dont understand why we continued to make blunder after blunder when the refs and Eagles were handing us the game, we decide to hand it right back :(

  10. fanfor55years says:

In retrospect I wonder if they’re kicking themselves over placing Canty on PUP. Sure could have used him yesterday. I think that single addition would have won that game.

    • Willy Wonka says:

Week 6 cannot get here fast enough! also, are we carrying sash or did he get pup’d? if we are carrying him we get him back vs. the browns right?
