It's hard to believe it's really been five years since defensive end Michael Strahan hung up his cleats and walked away from the game, but as nominees for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2013 were named on Thursday, it served as a stark reminder that time flies. Strahan was one of 13 first-year eligible modern-era candidates, and one of 16 nominees with ties to the New York Giants.

In 15 seasons with Big Blue (1993 – 2007), Strahan set several franchise records including most regular season games played (216) and sacks (141.5). In 2001, he also set the NFL record with 22.5 sacks, and was a member of the 2007 Super Bowl XLII championship team. Since his retirement, Strahan had a brief stint as an actor on the sitcom "Brothers", and currently serves as a co-host on both FOX NFL Sunday and “Live! with Kelly and Michael.”

In addition to Strahan, former running back Tiki Barber was also among the nominees for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2013. And despite falling out of favor with some Giants fans since his first retirement in 2006, Barber put up numbers worthy of consideration for the Hall including a franchise record 10,449 rushing yards. He also holds team records for attempts (2,217), longest touchdown run (95 yards), rushing yards in a single season (1,860), yards per game in a single season (116.3), most rushing yards in a single game (234) and many more.

Other nominees with ties to the New York Giants include quarterback Phil Simms, coaches Bill Parcells, Dan Reeves, Bill Arnsparger and Marty Schottenheimer, running backs Ottis Anderson, Herschel Walker and Brian Mitchell, tackle Lomas Brown, center Joe Fields, punter Sean Landeta, kicker Morten Anderson, cornerback Everson Walls, and former General Manager George Young.

i remember when the giants introduced TC as the new head coach and one of the things he said is that hes gonna reduce injuries…. im willling to say there has been more injuries….BIG injuries under TC tenure than any time in giants history.
Nicks, i love him but come on, hes a lock to miss 3 games a year. our 2ndary is always banged up…. whats up with rivers??!!!! WE NEED HIM TO GO SUNDAY!!!!

strah deserves it…. i dont know if barber gets in…and omg can you imagine his speach if he does….. another “Look how great i am” speach. ugh

Strahan should go right in … Tiki may take a few years … Phil … never. Sorry Phil, but you just don’t have the numbers.

George Young deserves sainthood. For those of you too young to remember, he was the man who rescued the franchise. Turned it around. And made the NY Giants into a first class organization after we were the laughing stock of the NFL for over a decade.

As for Parcells … he’ll get in sooner or later … and I just threw up a little in my mouth having said that.

Giants fans also owe a huge debt of gratitude to Pete Rozelle, the former NFL commissioner (who was 1,000 times the commish the empty suit Goodell will ever be)

It was Rozelle who intervened between the co-owners of the Giants at that time -, Well and Timmy Mara – whose incessant bickering had rendered the team utterly dysfunctional. It was Rozelle who begat George Young who begat Ray Perkins who begat Bill Parcells… and the subsequent rebirth of the NFL’s flagship franchise.

Yep. And that stretch of total clownish ineptitude is what created super negative fans like the legendary Frank. Fans who were just beaten down by year-after-year of dreadful football. They never got over it.

are there future HOF’s playing on this team? besides Eli

This injury situation seems bad but it’s all short term injuries. We are merely banged up and not comprimised long term seemingly with any of these current injuries. Players siting out a game or two seems like a big deal now. But when are sitting in week 13 at 8-4 (hopefully better) with everyone healthy plus Canty and Sash and ready for another run everyone will see then.

  6. norm says:

We can whinge about injuries all we want… but I doubt we’ll get much sympathy from Philly fans who at this very moment are trying to figure out how an O-line missing 3/5 of its starters will keep the ravaging hordes of the Giants pass rush at bay. Not to mention how their skittish, injury prone QB will survive the onslaught.

As other, wiser posters have pointed out here ad nauseum, the NFL is a depth league. Having the best 22 starters will get you through the first half of the season – if you’re incredibly lucky. Beyond that, it’s all about how good players 23-40 on the roster turn out to be.

To that point, I’m not especially worried about our depth at WR (especially considering who the guy throwing them the ball will be) Depth at corner is a bit more troubling but it’s still too early to declare it a problem.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the ball, the Eagles are really plumbing the nether regions of their depth chart on the O-line. I have no idea who they are or how good they might be. But as of right now, it’s safe to say that it’s much cause for concern for the Eagles as the issues at WR and CB are for the Giants.

    • Terrence97 says:

not looking for sympathy. i, like other fans are tired of injuries every year. i mean we are always losing big players every year. we all know we have a deep team and we are battle tested especially when our backs are up against the wall. it would be nice to not be as banged up in week 4 heading into a divisional game. philly will come to play, its brian dawkins night. they are retiring his number.

  7. fanfor55years says:

With the Eagles’ situation on their O-line we can win this game pretty easily IF our defensive coordinator will bring plenty of blitzes. No way a bunch of depth guys and newbies will be able to double JPP, handle the other end, protect the middle against penetration and at the same time adequately pick up blitzers. What I’m afraid of is that Fewell will figure he can now simply go with a 4-man rush and make up for his deficiencies in the defensive backfield thanks to injuries by flooding zones. That will work some of the time, but so will pounding a relatively defenseless Vick as long as they have first controlled McCoy.

Pressure, Perry, pressure. The Eagles cannot handle it. To my mind, this is a game that we win with a good game plan and can lose without one. Problem being that I’ve seen us throw up a LOT of awful game plans against the Eagles since 2007.

By the way, the Eagles’ loss of a good linebacker offsets our loss of Rivers. And they need good play from the linebackers at least as much as do we.

    • BLU-82 says:

I believe Fewell will still blitz whenever he can. Over the past three seasons, we blitzed 47% of the time against the birds- as opposed to about 17% for all other teams. Fewell knows what works, and I don’t see why he would deviate too far from that strategy, even if he does blitz a little less.

  8. Krow says:

I wonder if it will be the old “shredded by the backup QB” scenario.

We seem all set up to pound Vick into submission. Once that happens every Giants fan knows what comes next. Nick Foles enters the game … we stop all the pressure packages … and give him plenty of time to get comfortable and throw at his leisure. He then puts up huge numbers while we scream, “Jaysus … another 3 man rush. WTF are they doing? Why did they change?”

    • norm says:

I’ll admit it – that scenario scares the bejeezus out of me as well.

This team made Vince Freakin’ Young look like an All Pro last year. I’d expect nothing less from Nick Foles were he to enter the game.

      • Krow says:

Guaranteed. We’re the team every backup QB dreams about. We never fail to make them stars. Mainly because we always drop into a soft, plain vanilla zone defense every time one enters the game. It’s like some unwritten rule. Akin to the 2nd-and-10 draw … or the obligatory running play near the opposing endzone. As they would say in Japan … shoganai.

  9. LUZZ says:

Fewel’s passive defense is the thing that has frustrated me most about this team the last few years. When we bring pressure we seem to dominate, when we play soft zone we allow 15 play drives with 6 3rd down conversations. It’s maddening.

The only game I can remember our pressure packages biting us in the **** was against Philly in 2010, but that game was so screwed up for so many reasons.

Pressure, Perry!!! I have no clue if we’ll see it but we’ll know in the first series of the game. Whatever he comes out doing is what he will do the entire game. In game adjustments are a foreign concept to our dipsh!t DC.
