Philadelphia Eagles’ Trent Cole: a Deer is a Better Athlete than Eli Manning

It's now week four of the NFL season, and that means the first matchup between the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles is on tap. It also means that the back-and-forth chit-chat is due to begin, and Eagles defensive end Trent Cole wasted no time in firing the first shot.

While appearing on "Eagles Unscripted" -a Saturday night show on PHL 17- Cole was asked which would be easier to catch and release: a deer or Giants quarterback Eli Manning?

Well, the obvious answer is a deer, so the attempt at humor truly failed. However, Cole took it a bit further and didn't miss his opportunity for a swipe at Easy-E.

Eli Manning vs. a deer?” Cole replied, “I can tell you the deer would be a better athlete.”

In terms of trash talk, this is about as tame and ridiculous as it gets. But hey, who hasn't seen a deer evade a sack and toss a bomb to David Tyree on third-and-five, extending the drive that would eventually win Super Bowl XLII?

The true irony in this "insult" is that it occurred on Saturday night – the day before the Eagles were absolutely manhandled by the Arizona Cardinals. But, hey … priorities. Right?

Eh, much ado about nothing. Eli’s slow. We get it.

  2. Levito says:

Wonder who would score higher on the wonderlic, Cole or a deer?

  3. The Original G Man says:

Once upon a time, comparisons to Eli and a deer would involve the phrase “in a headlights.” How do you like me now, Trent Cole??! :-)

  4. jfunk says:

Uh, I have to agree with Trent here. I’m pretty sure Eli gets caught and tackled by football players pretty regularly while trying to evade them. I’m pretty sure none of those guys could catch and tackle a deer.

  5. Samardzija says:

Cole is right though lol, Eli is a pretty worthless “athlete”. Not that it matters…

  6. kujo says:

This will totally be in Poor Eli…

  7. BigBlueGiant says:

Yep. Pretty much sums it up.

Deers are crafty creature. They’re quick, they can jump and they have decent speed.

  8. HopLax says:

I will take my sloth Eli over your deer-in-the-headlights turnover machine Vick any day, any game or any season.

I mentioned this during the Giants/Carolina game thread and the day after, but it’s nice to see the national commentariat take notice as well. From this week’s Peter King’s MMQB:

“Good instincts and intelligence, Jayron Hosley, the Giants rookie cornerback. Hosley, on a blitz of Cam Newton Thursday, wasn’t faked out by the nimble Newton. Then, when he contacted Newton as he released the ball, Hosley had the presence of mind to not drive him into the ground, but to slide off him and avoid a possible roughing penalty. That was a five-year-vet play by a third-round rookie”

  10. Cazart says:

Every time Eli completes a pass on the Iggles’ D, Trent will be thinking, “D’OH! A DEER!”

PREDICTION: Trent Cole, who is a very talented player, is a STONE-COLD LOCK to make one incredibly, unbelievably, Andy-Reid-Clock-Management-level boneheaded play in this game. They should just give us the 15 yards now.
