After playing only in jumbo packages as an eligible receiver in last Wednesday's loss to the Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants offensive lineman Will Beatty says his back if feeling much better and he's ready to resume his starting role at left tackle, which has been manned by veteran Sean Locklear.
"There's no pain," Beatty said on Monday. “I’m just waiting until [coach Coughlin] gives me the go-ahead.”
Like teammates James Brewer and Marvin Austin, Beatty was hampered by a back injury that seemed to have been exacerbated by the small mattresses at the University at Albany. And although no one would come right out and blame said mattresses, the general consensus was that they were at fault.
After missing much of the 2011 with a detached retina, the Giants were looking for Beatty to return in 2012 and demonstrate further improvement and development. In fact, offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride went as far as saying the team absolutely needed him back and healthy in order to maintain their high level of play.
"We need him," Gilbride said in July. "He has got to be there. We have lost what amounts to three starters in the last two years on the offensive line. You can't keep doing that. … If you lose [Beatty] that means four starters in the offensive line. Then it doesn’t matter how good your quarterback is."
Team doctors have been working diligently with Beatty and monitoring his medications closely. Barring any further setbacks, he's likely to start against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

That’s absurd. Beatty’s back is punishment for not living a righteous life. Clearly a religious issue.

You guys have it all wrong; The University Of Albany is a “state school” run by government. This is what happens when the GOVT provides benefits you get sub standrard care and small lumpy mattresses. If the Giants had stayed at a private institution, one that celebrates profit and business, they would look at Training camp as an opportunity to make money. The end result is that Training camp could be sponsored by Tempur-Pedic the highest rated mattress in the industry. Jerry Reese could negotiate a commercial spot for players like Beatty in return for them giving some cap relief to the team. Everyone in this capitilist model is a big winner including the player’s backs. Then again those mattresses at Albany are generic and thus “fair” for all players regardless of height,weight or contract size. Just sayin…lol

While that rant was a little tongue in cheek; it is in fact the exact way Jerry Jones runs his training camp. I’ve seen pictures that make you wonder if its the Dallas Cowboys or the Nike Cowboys, Gatorade Cowboys etc..
Well, it’s not as ridiculous as you’d think. All NFL players have excellent health insurance. There’s no market place to shop in for better coverage. Nope their employer provides it seemingly free of charge, at least at the supply side. The costs are folded into the various machinations of the CBA and profit sharing agreements without quality suffering adversely.
I don’t think Gilbride’s comment is an understatement. We do indeed need him. I don’t think Beatty’s availability will be a luxury it is a necessity. I’m in favor of having Beatty at LT, Locklear at RT, and Diehl at Costco.
Conventional wisdom here and in the Giant community was always that Diehl is better at Guard. I hate to say it, but any time the guy has been at Guard he has looked just as bad, if not worse. I feel like I’m trash talking Diehl and I hate doing that. He has been a big part of them team for the last decade. But his play the last year or two has dropped off from the sub-par range into the dreadful territory.
I think Diehl has to play much more than on bad game at RT to hit the bench. But I think it’s possible Lockear does replace him at some point if his play continues and the offense is ineffective.
Diehl at guard las year was proven doesn’t work. Many of us assumed he would be good there but now you don’t hear many say that now.
The combination of Beatty being ready with Prince and Austin practicing is huge. I think it’s possible to deal with one poor tackle but two is hard. Beatty can look down LT at from from the pass protection aspect. Also given his athleticism with him, Wilson and Bennett if maybe we can run to the edges effectively.
Let’s hope Beatty helps out the line

Snow presumably replaces Nick Sundberg, who is an absolute beast for playing through a broken arm Sunday.
If you haven’t heard, the raiders last night had an absolutely nightmare with the long snapping. I believe three, four block punts, at least. Boy did I feel their pain…
Oh you didn’t hear about the Raider game last night? Their long snapper got hurt during the game. The backup long snaper had 2 snaps that caused to punter to be tackled without getting off a punt and a 3rd punt blocked. Which obviously gave SD great field position and bascially cost Oakland the game.
In the Oakland game the back up snapper was needed and he failed in dramatic fashion (2x).

I said before the season started that I thought Will Beatty was a real key to the season (that was when he first developed back issues). Once he’s on the field at LT our offensive line improves dramatically. Suddenly we have a good pass protection guy on Eli’s blind side and a choice between two guys on the other side with the other MUCH better depth than a not-ready-yet Brewer.
We also then have both Diehl and Locklear who CAN play guard (we don’t want either doing that, but if the best option right now is Petrus they both look pretty good in comparison) so we’ve increased our options there. We also have a better option then if Baas goes down because if Cordle isn’t thought ready Boothe can take the spot, Locklear or Diehl can take LG and the other hold down RT. No, none of that is ideal, but it’s a helluva lot better than being one injury away from seeing Mitch Petrus counted upon to be consistently adequate.
I think this news is fantastic. I’m also really pleased to hear that Hosley looks to be almost ready and that Prince is probably playing this week or next and that Coe is looking pretty good. We may need all of the above this Sunday.

On the one hand, it’s great that we’re getting our starting left tackle back before the gauntlet of elite pass rushers starts.
On the other hand, he’s probably a downgrade in run blocking. A downgrade to a line that just averaged a shade under 3 yards a carry.
It’s going to be a long year.
Sad huh. I mean it’s not like Locklear was some road grader.
