Happy Birthday: Giants 101 is Eight Years Old Today

On this day in 2004, Giants 101 as we know it was born. I published my very first article at 9:47 AM EST, covering the decision of kicker Steve Christie to sign with the New York Football Giants as opposed to retiring. Truth be told, that feels like a lifetime ago.

It's hard to imagine that a tiny blog with a grand total of zero readers would become what it is today. It almost seems fitting that the Giants 101/Fan Van tailgate took place this past week so that we could see just how popular and meaningful this website has become for so many. It was a truly overwhelming experience for myself, Jen and Paul – it was like nothing we could have ever expected.

The truth is, we still don't have a grasp on how popular Giants 101 has become. For me, it's still just an outlet (that now comes with many more strings attached) to write about and discuss my favorite team. No matter how many times we appear on ESPN, NFL.com, Pro Football Talk, etc. … it never really hits home. The elation of people meeting us on Wednesday was almost uncomfortable because in reality, who the hell are we? And I've always been of the mindset that without you readers, this site would be absolutely nothing – it would still be that irrelevant blog on Most Valuable Network with zero traffic.

Every year I say the same thing: "I can't believe it's been another year." It's been an incredible ride for so very many reasons, and we'll all look for it to continue.

We've seen tremendous growth over the last eight years, we've shared in two Super Bowl Championships and we've also experienced incredible pain and sadness with the loss of one of our very own, Mr. James Douglas (JD in Dallas), who passed away earlier this year.

It's been a wide range of experiences for all of us who are a part of Giants 101, and that will continue for the foreseeable future – hopefully with several more championships along the way!

For today, we say Happy Birthday to Giants 101. And Giants 101 says thank you to everyone reading!

Nominate! - On the birthday of Giants 101, nominations for the Giants 101 Hall of Fame begin. James Douglas will be enshrined under the fan wing, so we now need to compile a legitimate list for the Tim Carter (confident players who were hyped by our readers, but never made it due to injuries) wing and the Jonas Seawright (players who had 0 experience during the regular season but were hyped endlessly by our readers, yet never lived up to it for non-injury reasons) wing. Please list your nominations based on the appropriate wing. Voting will begin as early as this afternoon.

Happy Birthday G 101 from a daily reader, sometime poster. Thanks for feeding my obsession with the New York Football Giants!

I too and an original MVN guy. I was a regular blogger on the BBI in 2006. I always liked Eric’s articles and insights but I found their Corner Forum unappealing both because the ability of individual bloggers to start their own threads, which made the conversation too diffuse, and because of the rank homerism that brooked no dissent. It was the Tennessee game and the Kiwi released sack of VY that heralded my exit from BBI and sparked my journey across the Internet to MVN.
I don’t recall how I discovered MVN, but when I did it turned out to be exactly what I was looking for, a terrific place to come and talk and rant and whine and exult about Giant football. In those early days, Frank was the star of the site. His rants about the miserly and inept management, more concerned with satisfying the grandchildrens’ drug habits than the team’s winning, were epic, hilarious, and always tinged with a tiny kernel of truth. as the site matured and moved we picked up a number of regulars, but lost too many as well. I think back longingly to TheRealBryanMcKoy, an Eagle troll who was great at inciting the board to raucous debates; jcharles and his epic TGEM rants; and the troll from Dallas who really wasn’t a troll because he was upfront about the fact that he was a Dallas fan who loved our site because there were so many passionate posters.
Sadly it appears that we are losing my old nemisis, DEMO, who hasn’t posted a single “ankle-grabbing” epigram in the wake of our opening night debacle.
But new posters keep popping up and plenty of regulars remain; the conversation stays lively; and our NY Giants always manage to keep it interesting even if we don’t always appreciate their methods.
So Happy Bithday and great great job Dan. On behalf of the board (if I can be so bold), “Hat’s off and thank you!”

And I nominate Duke Calhoun to the Jonas Seawright wing of the G101 HOF.

    Congrats, old man!

I came here in 2006 with LaVar Arrington when no one but Dan said it was happening. Rookies!

  6. Jen Polashock says:

A shoutout to our LOYAL readers too. Without you all, G101 wouldn’t be growing up so quickly! We met many readers that we encouraged to start posting (admit it, it can be daunting for a newcomer! LOL), as it can only ADD to the conversations here. New thoughts should be and are welcomed…so we HOPE to see many more adding to G101. Thanks, Dan for being the strong person you are and keeping this GIANTS homebase going– no matter what. I raise my, well… mug of coffee now, glass later to YOU and look forward to MANY more!
I’m actually interested in these “nominations”– should be GOOD. :)

By the way…that cake looks DRY AS H*LL. *cough*

Thanks, everyone! We’re really glad were able to bring you this site every day and that you all truly appreciate it. I know it gets heated here sometimes, but that wouldn’t happen if the site didn’t matter.

  9. Levito says:

Happy Birthday G101. I’ve read just about every article since 2006 when the site was on mvn. One of only a handful of sites I visit religiously.

  10. Kevros says:

Happy Birthday. I can’t remember what year it was when I started reading G101 but it was back when Hanshi and Krow were the only consistent commenter (there were other commenters, they were the only two that I remember commenting multiple times a day.) Fitting that they were the first two to comment on this post.

Nomination for the Tim Carter Wing: Jamaar Taylor
Nomination for the Jonas Seawright Wing: Stoney Woodson
