Rookie cornerback Jayron Hosley is expected to see action on Wednesday night against the Dallas Cowboys, and General Manager Jerry Reese says Prince Amuamara has not yet been ruled out either. But it's Michael Coe who will get the start across from Corey Webster as Big Blue opens the 2012 season.
“He’ll get the start,” defensive coordinator Perry Fewell said. “In the OTAs, Michael performed well and really gave us the confidence that we had another guy that was competing at corner…Michael can run, he is very fast. Michael is physical and is not afraid. And Michael has a very strong mentality. If he doesn’t have success on a play, we can chew his ass out and he’ll come back and make a play for you. So I like his mental makeup also.”
Fewell isn't the only one who believes in Coe; several of his teammates recently expressed complete faith in the sixth-year cornerback out of Arkansas. Safety Kenny Phillips praised him for a solid training camp, saying "he’s proven he can play on this level."
Although this will be his first career start, Coe is no stranger to playing time. Since being drafted in the fifth-round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts, Coe has played in 27 games (missed the 2008 season) and collected 22 tackles as a reserve. He also has the added benefit of being familiar with the Giants' defensive system and philosophy.
"Michael Coe is gonna step up and play his butt off," defensive captain Justin Tuck said. "We already know that. He's been here. This ain't like this his first year. He's not a rookie. He's been around us a lot. He knows what's expected of him. He knows what's expected of this defense. I think he's very…he's ready to go."
Coe will not be eased into the starting role as he'll immediately matchup against Miles Austin, Dez Bryant, Kevin Ogletree and a high intensity Cowboys offense.
