New York Giants Place Terrell Thomas, Shaun Rogers on Season-Ending Injured Reserve

For the second straight year, New York Giants cornerback Terrell Thomas has been placed on season-ending Injured Reserve (IR), this time coming after he "aggravated" his surgically repaired ACL. The IR designation likely came as a surprise to T2, who said his knee felt great and who even hoped to be ready for opening week against the Dallas Cowboys.

"Like I mentioned before I just aggravated my knee; it feels strong and no swelling. I have [been] running in the pool lately to keep active. I am getting back to my old self; my goal is to still play in the season's opener. I have been working my butt off every day; I have been in the weight room everyday and been watching film," Thomas wrote on his blog.

In addition to Thomas, the Giants also placed veteran defensive tackle Shaun Rogers on season-ending IR with a blood clot. They held out hope for as long as they could that new medication would allow him to play, but with mandatory cuts and roster trimming bearing down on them, it became a numbers game and Rogers drew the short straw.

Neither IR designation is of the new short-term variety, so Thomas and Rogers will join defensive end Justin Trattou, defensive tackle Martin Parker and offensive tackle Brandon Mosley on the shelf for the entire season.

In addition to the five players on injured reserve, the Giants have also waived cornerbacks Brian Witherspoon (knee) and Bruce Johnson (shoulder) with injury designation, while defensive tackle Chris Canty and tight end Travis Beckum are listed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

Michael Coe will likely start at cornerback week one in place of Thomas as the team waits for Prince Amukamara to return from a high ankle sprain.

Pro Football Focus’ list of 10 cuts who can contribute contains 2 ex-Giants:

(*SPOILER ALERT* … they’re DJ Ware and Bryan Kehl)

REPOSTS … things moving fast … argh …

Petrus got a spot by default. I believe he’s a place-holder, and that the team is actively looking for a trade. If all potential deals fizzle then I suspect they’ll pick someone up from the final cuts. It takes a while to wind down to our turn … last … so it’s not surprising that nothing’s happened yet.

This roster is a bit of a youth movement … especially on the DL. I’m wondering if this reflects a certain pessimism over Osi? We should keep a sharp eye on how they handle both Ojomo and Tracy. If they’re being ‘groomed’ then they’ll get more snaps then would ordinarily be expected.

TT … I never really thought they’d cut him. His salary isn’t a cap killer, and this way he’ll come to camp next year for a full evaluation. However … I believe some very heavy escalators cut in next season. TT had better be ‘the old TT’ … or he’s gone for sure. That or a contract re-negotiation happens.

    ALSO …

Being a long time fan … there’s a certain deja vu in this roster. In the dead era lots of UDFAs and “surprises” would make the team. And we’d all think that perhaps this year was the one that would turn it around.

Now that was thousands of years ago. Adam and Eve were riding dinosaurs to the office. And Dark Lord Xenu was still working out the kinks of his Galactic Confederacy. This isn’t the same clown patrol that ran the team in the 70?s.

But as norm cautions … let’s give these youngsters a few games before we declare them gods.

I wonder if Prince Amukamara will ever play in a season opener?

“Prince, you ain’t never played in week 1! You don’t know what it feel like!”

  4. fanfor55years says:

Well, I don’t need to wait to see how these kids play because I already know that except on the offensive line this is the strongest roster the Giants have had in my lifetime. The young guys are surrounded by a lot of veteran talent and will learn as they go. The best news is that they have now prepared themselves for some of the inevitable losses of major talent to free agency down the road and have done as good a job of “rebuilding” within a championship era as I can imagine. As fans we should be awfully pleased.

I do think we should be prepared to lose one of the young studs in exchange for a solid offensive lineman who they know has proved he can play: a Locklear for the interior of the O-line. Wouldn’t surprise me at all.

I said it a few weeks ago in jest, and I’ll say it again today with a bit more seriousness–I would part with Osi for a stud left tackle, or a stud interior lineman plus a pick.

    Kujo:

I understand the logic, but what’s the play at DE at that point? After JPP and Tuck, we’d have 2 inexperienced kids. Sign a vet? Move Kiwi to DE?

    • kujo says:

Oh no! We only have 2 All Pro’s, an exceptional DE/LB hybrid and then some young hungry kids behind them?! I do declare that I’ve given myself the vapors just thinking about it!

      • The Original G Man says:

I’m serious. What’s the plan? They would need to make further changes. Tuck and JPP can’t play every down, plus Tuck is a perennial injury risk with his shoulder. I wouldn’t be comfortable with Tracey and Ojomo being the next man up. Would you move Kiwi to DE? Look to bring in a vet?

        • kujo says:

All of the above represent far better solutions to that minor problem than the current state of our OL depth chart.

Seriously, if Boothe tears his ACL waddling to the ice cream stand outside Giants stadium, we are F*CKED.

  7. kujo says:

I’m not going to rosterbate based on the final 53. It looks good, but looking good on paper is the Philadelphia way. We have serious question marks throughout this roster, and saying “this is the most talented roster the Giants have had” is just a stupid, stupid comment. This whole house could come tumbling down as a direct result of this pathetic offensive line. Remember that each year in the Coughlin era, there has been a spate of injuries at 1 specific position. During the summer, we all thought it would be DT (again) or CB (again). We should be so lucky, because if we are a c*nt’s hair away from starting Petrus or Cordle. And we’ve seen ample evidence as to why that should be a serious concern for Giants fans.

I’m telling you…I don’t care how many excellent WRs or DEs we have. Reese has presided over the destruction of a once-great offensive line. He better hope this stack of cards doesn’t fall over.

  8. Dirt says:

Here is my opinion on TT:

    1. The team is awfully confident in Webster, Amukamara and Hosley.

    2. The team believes in TT and wants to retain his rights.

    3. It would have been so easy to do some other moves which would have allowed TT to stay, which make 1 & 2 evident

    4. If it takes 2 years to return from surgery, why push it in light of #1?

  9. GOAT56 says:

    Krow -

I think the roster reflects TC/JR keeping talent. Just about in every area we kept the most talented players. Keeping both Tracy and Ojomo was because they were each one of our best 53 and have legit upside. DE is the position we will always keep talent at. Osi will likely be difficult to keep so you can’t assume he will be back. Plus Tracy might earn himself a 2-3 mil type offer for next year since he becomes a free agent as well. We need to protect ourselves to make sure we always can be strong rushing the passer.

I think what we saw in Tracy is a big reason didn’t draft a DE this year, we saw his promise. Ojomo is another find much like Cruz, a player that no one saw as anything but a camp body or maybe PS as absolutely most. While I feel Ojomo is just a “redshirt” this year if Osi leaves he has a good shot at the 3rd DE position next year if he continues to develop.

The reason why some of us felt TT would be cut is not due to the money, in fact we felt he should get his money as an injury settlement. With the 6 mil bonus due to him in the offseason there is no way he’s paid that money. So essentially TT is being placed on IR just to release him after the season. In addition, him being placed on IR ends his season. By cutting him if healthy later maybe he could be re-signed. The issue with IR is I think at somepoint he will force an injury settlement, become a free agent but then be unable to play for us. If he was cut he could still play for us later in the year. At 29 next year, coming off of 2 years not playing football and with Prince and Hosley then being exprienced I think TT is done playing for us.

    • Krow says:

I agree that TT is a very long shot. But without knowing the details of his deal … it’s really hard to say whether release, cut, or IR makes the most sense.

I also buy into the ‘keeping talent’ scenario … which is why I think there’s something in the works for the OL. Mainly because Petrus is certainly not talented. He’s there to be cut when the bring in the guy they’re after … if I’m reading the tea leaves correctly.

  10. turkish says:

I’m with Kujo on this. This O-Line was horrendous last season. PFF had the O-Line rated as one of the worst in the NFL.

Eli does a great job sliding around in the pocket and getting rid of the ball, but he needs better protection.

The run blocking has been even worse. Wilson/Bradshaw will struggle if it isn’t fixed.

If a team is willing to give up a solid OT and change for Osi, I’m all for it. He’s gone next year anyway.

    • kujo says:

I recognize that this prospect is about as close to impossible as you can be. There’s no rumor behind my statement, and I don’t have well-bred “sources” like FF55. I’m just talking about a hypothetical situation where someone offered to exchange an excellent OL for one of our excellent DEs. I would make that trade.

      • Krow says:

There’s a lot of merit in this … IF … IF they’re pretty sure they can’t sign Osi. That’s the wildcard. And right now I’m thinking he’s one-and-done. Much as I’d hate to see that happen. Because Osi is a ‘big play game changer’. And those guys are rare. I’d want one hell of an OLman for him.
