New York Giants CB Bruce Johnson Waived with Injury Designation

The New York Giants have waived cornerback Bruce Johnson with injury designation due to a shoulder injury, as the team continues to finalize the 53-man roster that will take the field next Wednesday against Dallas.

In week three of the preseason, Johnson briefly took the field with the starting defense after Prince Amukamara suffered a high-ankle sprain. Although Johnson was victimized by Brandon Marshal almost immediately after he went into the game, he still could have been a contributing member to the defensive backfield in the absence of Terrell Thomas, Jayron Hosley, and Amukamara.

For the Giants, this means that Michael Coe and Justin Tryon will be heavily relied upon in week one. It seems as if the team may carry a few injured corners on the roster, in hopes that they can skate by until Prince, T2, and Hosley return. Once the Giants get back to full strength, the team will once again posses a deep secondary capable of keeping up with the NFC's elite.

However, for Bruce Johnson, this is a tough break for a guy who has said, and done all the right things in his time with Big Blue.

I’m surprised about Ware. I liked Ware much more than the masses prior to 2011, then I realized him and Brown were about the same. Brown did show more this preseason. I wonder who is the 3rd down back. I think it might be Bradshaw to start and Wilson will get a lot of early down work. Maybe Brown will be the short yardage back.

I’m also surprised about Thomas but I trust JR/TC. I really think that Ojomo took his spot.

Scott the CB/return specialist really made the team?

    • BLU-82 says:

Kinda gives the impression that the reason Kuhn didn’t get early snaps Weds was because they already knew what they had, and wanted to give the other DT’s a shot.

    • norm says:

      Agreed about Thomas.

I think the fact that Ojo spent a year at Miami lined up inside made the decision to go with 4 DTs much easier for the coaches.

This also makes it easier for them to keep Tracy – who I think will probably replace Tollefson as the #4 DE in the rotation. Ojomo could then be used as a flex player; a super-sub, not too dissimilar to the way in whcih Boothe was used on the O-line last year.

That said, it would not surprise me to see Marcus Thomas back on this team. Remember, the Giants have to save one roster spot now for the “temporary IR” player, whoever that may be. But once that player is IR’d, that roster spot will open up again and one of the players cut today will likely be brought back. Could very well be Thomas, who I thought looked good when I watched him against the Bears and Pats.

Much shorter self-exile this time around. Good. Joel has gone on to a better place.

        • norm says:

That’s what I keep telling myself.

Hope to see him coming soon, to a rooftop near me, in the not-too-distant future.

      • GOAT56 says:

Damn I meant to add that part about TT. You’re right that a player will be added back because I fully expect to IR TT. If Austin was going to e placed on IR I doubt we would take a chance and cut a DT we needed. Rodgers doesn’t make sense to me bc we can just cut him and sign him later I would think.

I am plain excited about Ojomo. I don’t care if he was doing what he did on Thursday against Alabama. He looked awfully good. His athleticism and size are not unlike Osi’s and JPP’s. If he develops the possible loss of Osi next year won’t be as awful a blow. No matter what, they MUST keep that pass rush going because this team is now built on the two foundations of a great quarterback and a great pass rush, which are obviously the best weapons on offense and defense you can have in today’s NFL.

I’m also glad they released Hendricks rather than Kuhn. He isn’t “safe” yet, but the move to put Canty on the PUP list looks like it was made to keep Kuhn on the roster.

So, biggest surprises of camp? I’d say Ojomo, Tracy, Kuhn, Hill, both Browns, Robinson and Locklear. Rivers and Bennett aren’t really surprises because most figured they were good. But there were serious doubts about Tracy and none of the others were figured early to make the roster (although I thought Hill and Andre Brown were good and said so, and really liked the Locklear addition for all of the reasons he has stuck….the guy can play, he just got edged out by younger players for two clubs who had high draft picks or much cheaper players who could be used instead). Robinson’s play made it impossible to try to get him to the practice squad, as did Kuhn’s, even though they were both “projects”.

    • BillyS says:

Ojomo was definitely the surprise of camp. He battled for a spot and made it. He literally had to climb a mountain and did it. I couldn’t be happier for the guy. And I wasn’t aware that he lined up inside a lot when he was in college. That makes me feel a little better about losing Marcus Thomas. I’m still a bit bummed about losing Thomas, but not at the expense of losing Kuhn or Ojomo.

  3. jfunk says:

Shocked about Ware, but not disappointed. I think Brown has looked good. Still don’t see anything worthwhile in Scott, but oh well. It’s really too bad Brown blew out that achilles…I think he’d probably have tremendous upside if only he had some more burst, but that’s probably gone forever.

Agreed with any preceding defense of Cordle. I’ve said several times this preseason I don’t understand any of the hate that’s been directed at him. He’s done just fine every time I’ve watched him and he plays center. I know it’d always be nice to have a better player everywhere, but he’s not terrible.

We need a backup guard, badly. If we wind up finding a tackle, don’t assume it means Beatty is done…it could mean Diehl is moving to super-sub role. He’d hate it, but he’d still do it, smile, and tell everybody how grateful he is to be on the team. That’s just how he rolls.

DEMO! Your boy Hightower was cut……wait that was by boy. HA!

  5. JimStoll says:

I’m looking for some serious G101 love
looks like I was right about Ware, Ojomo, Tracy and Kuhn

    • fanfor55years says:

Absolutely!! You nailed a number of those. Good job.

Maybe they’ll all forget the 3-13 prediction of a few years ago? Ah, when you put opinions out there you win some, lose some. Right now you’re HOT. Keep it going.

  6. jfunk says:

I’m a bit disappointed about Thomas.

I can’t help by think that one year from now, we’ll all be wishing that he were on this team while we wonder how to fill the void created by the departure of Canty, Rocky, and Austin all for varying reasons.

  7. JimStoll says:

    Mike Garafolo ?@MikeGarafolo
DE Adrian Tracy is in. That means five DEs on the roster. #nyg

    • jfunk says:

3 of whom (Tuck, JPP, Ojomo) can lineup at DT. Kiwi and Tracy can lineup at DE or OLB.

Perry Fewell will be able to rush the passer from absolutely anywhere he wants at any time.

      • GOAT56 says:

I don’t think Ojomo dresses. I think he might fit better as an all around DE if one of the top 3 got hurt. But fits better as the 4th DE.

        • norm says:

          Agree.

At this point, he’s much more of a developmental prospect. But given both his preseason production and his JPP-like measurables (see below) they could not afford the risk of sending him to the PS.

He’ll be used strictly as a super-sub at both DE and DT; inactive in the weeks when the regualr rotation guys are healthy.

      Yes!

  9. norm says:

After the NE game, when the Ojomo buzz crescendoed to a full roar, I decided to do a bit of google research on the kid.

When I learned that his measurables are almost identical to those of JPP (6’4, 270 lbs, 81 3/4″ wingspan, 4.7 40 for Ojo; 6’3, 280 lbs, 81″ wingspan, 4.7 40 for JPP), I concluded that he was a lock to make this team. He perfectly fit the Reese prototype of the ideal pass rusher. Even if he was not yet ready to take on first teamers, he at least possessed the raw material that the “never can have too many pass rushers” Reese spend his nights dreaming about.

As we saw in the last draft, that prototype pass rusher (big body, long arms, excellent size/speed ratio) is now being aggressively sought out by other GMs around this copycat league. That’s why guys like Chandler Jones were drafted higher than they might have been in year’s past, despite some rather tepid production in college.

Given his measurables it’s kind of surprising, then, that Ojomo managed to fall completely through the cracks. My guess is that the year he spent at DT really dropped him off the radar. Should it come to pass that he turns out to be the next great stud pass rusher for the Giants, Reese really should send the Miami coach a bottle of cognac every Christmas (personally delivered by Joel Reinders, perhaps?) for doing a most excellent job keeping this kid away from the prying eyes of the rest of the NFL.

    • fanfor55years says:

There has to be something REALLY special about our scouting group. They were the only ones who seemed to know that Jacqauin Williams had gained 30 pounds after his college season while retaining his speed. Then they find Ojomo. And obviously someone told Reese that Will Hill was worth the personality risk (his talent was known to anyone who ever saw him play, even starting in high school in New Jersey). And how about Markus Kuhn? Incredible story there, and perhaps our next Jim Burt.

John Mara has obviously committed money to the scouting group, and it is reputed to be the best in the business. But some of these finds are getting insane. Kudos to all those nameless guys whom we never know about but whose work is fundamental to the success of the team.

      • BillyS says:

The scouts that are finding these gems are definitely earning their money. They’ve got something that’s very rare in this current economy: job security.

    • BillyS says:

He seems a bit more thick/less athletic than JPP. He’s quicker than he looks, but obviously nobody is JPP athletic. He’s got some Osi in him, but he’s got a solid build. Obviously the comparison isn’t spot on, but he just reminds me of a combo of Osi and a young Rocky Bernard (the version from the Seahawks who had a knack for getting to the QB). He’s a solidly built player who is strong and quick for his size. He’s Reese’s next great undrafted free agent find.

      • norm says:

Please don’t think I was even hinting at the possibility that Ojomo is even in the same zip code, talent-wise, as JPP.

I may be a bit on the slow side, bit I’m not a freakin’ moron.

        • BillyS says:

No…I was merely stating the obvious. No need to be so defensive.

          • norm says:

My response was not directed at you at all.

Just clarifying my position is all. In the event that Ojomo winds up out of the league in two years, I don’t want it to be said that “norm claimed he was the next JPP!”

            • BillyS says:

You should always leave a little wiggle room in case he does become the next JPP…think of the points you’d score for that one.

        • Norm, I thought of you last night during a little encounter I had with one Mckenna S. “Bear” Pascoe. He came into my restaurant last night with his fiancé. Very nice guy, both of them actually.

          • norm says:

I’m sure he’s a very nice guy; a real sweetheart, in fact.

At least that’s the impression I’ve received while watching him courteously give way to defenders en route to Eli Manning.

        • fanfor55years says:

But we do have “the JPP of tight ends”. I don’t know about that, but Adrien Robinson looked pretty darn good on Thursday and he will help out this season at some point.

        • GOAT56 says:

          LOL!

  10. Grateful Giants says:

i was completely wrong on jones and Ware. Here’s to hoping that Wilson is ready to step up and protect Eli.

Either way, we knew some good football players would be cut today, I wonder if this schefter tweet about an OL trade is real.

    5 freaking days!!

    • Yeah I knew Jones had no chance of beating out Paysinger, but man did DJ Ware fall from grace hard. Three weeks ago I was shouting from the rooftops for everyone to calm down, that we were stuck with Ware and he wasn’t so bad.

At the end of the day, all it took for Ware to lose his job were two better-than-average preseason performances from Brown to knock him out of a job.

    • BLU-82 says:

If they dropped Ware, gotta imagine they think Wilson is capable in pass protection. And he might get a fair few carries this season, too.
