New York Giants’ Mathias Kiwanuka on Jerry Jones: We’ve Been Whupping His Ass for a Long Time

'Mathias Kiwanuka' photo (c) 2006, Alexa - license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/ Shots fired! Shots fired! Duck and cover! The sound you hear is coming from New York Giants linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka, who kicked off the regular season in style while making an appearance on WFAN Thursday morning.

When asked about Jerry Jones' desire -and near promise- to beat the Giants' asses this season, Kiwi pulled no punches and laid into the Dallas Cowboys owner in such a way that Sheldon Cooper would have serenaded it with a "Bazinga!"

"He should [want to beat our asses]. I mean, the Giants have been whupping his ass for a long time," Kiwanuka said. "It's gotta be tough on the outside looking in on all these championships lately."

Bazinga, indeed.

The Giants have been chomping at the bit for the last several weeks, patiently waiting for the regular season to arrive. Mere seconds after the preseason ended on Wednesday night, defensive end Justin Tuck smiled, raised his eyebrows and proclaimed "now it's all about the Cowboys."

Regular season football is upon us! In only six days, Big Blue will begin their title defense against those hated Cowboys, and if they have anything to say about it, they'll continue whupping Jerry Jones' ass all the way back to Texas.

I love Kuhn. But he did very little against back-ups last night. Very disappointing. Perhaps he should be headed to the practice squad after all. On the other hand, Hendricks did nothing either. Thomas was definitely the best of the guys competing for spots (thank goodness Linval and Rocky look like monsters out there now).

They will have to go with Joseph, Bernard, Thomas and Austin. If they decide to keep both Tracy and Ojomo they will go with only those four and depend upon Tuck and JPP to help out as needed at tackle. If they drop one of those two youngsters (and I would NOT do that to keep Kuhn or Hendricks) then I suspect Kuhn is the last guy, but then when Canty comes back Kuhn would have to be waived and he wouldn’t be eligible for the practice team. I don’t like that idea. I’m starting to think we go with just those four tackles and keep Tracy and Ojomo while waiting for Canty, and only then make some final decisions on the defensive front.

this love affair with austin ought to stop
He has shown absolutely positively nothing in 2 preseasons and has been injured way more than he has been healthy
Kuhn over Austin all day long for my money

      • BigBlueGiant says:

        Not a chance.

While Austin has to keep healthy, Kuhn hasn’t showed anything either.

Austin will be given a pass this year, but next year he might find himself on the chopping block if he doesnt stay healthy.

I guess I’m going to be the lone voice here saying I would keep Tracy over Ojomo. Ojomo did absolutely nothing to get cut and everyone should be excited about what they from him the whole preseason. But let’s not quickly forget what Tracy has done. Tracy showed similar pass rushing type of talents when he got limited snaps at DE his rookie year and had I believe a 9 tackle game. Unfortunately, his base position was SLB and eventually he ended up on IR. His second year again in limited snaps at DE he flashed pass rushing aility ability but his base position was still SLB and he ends up on PS. This offseason we move him to DE and he played at a high level in OTAs, training camp and the Preseason game he played. The preseason game he played was against starters. You can tell by the comments from Osi especially that they think highly of the kids talents. Tracy is not Tollefson or Trattou, he is a legit pass rusher who was just playing the wrong position for a few years. I think we were being careful with Tracy to make sure he’s ready for the season.

Ojomo I’m high on too. Enough so that I would even carry 5 DEs and 5 DTs at least to start the year. But I can’t discount the fact of eho he did it agianst. It’s that Pats DE a great player or does McCants suck? And on these backup OLs there are a lot of players like McCants. When you are playing the type of competition Ojomo is playing against it’s hard to know if it will translate. With Tracy we know how it will translate. I would keep Ojomo over a healthy Trattou or even Tollefson if he was still around, I just think Tracy is similar talented pass rusher who’s done it against better competition so he’s more of a sure bet.

Can’t agree. If you watch him on nearly every snap as I did last night you see a kid who is dangerous on every play. It’s a bit like seeing Tuck, Osi and JPP when they first played in preseason games. You just know. He has a frame that will allow him to gain some weight and he has the instincts of a pass-rusher.

I’d keep him and if I had to send Tracy to the IR, so be it. Neither will pass waivers so there’s no chance they can get Ojomo to the practice team. I’m skeptical they’ll even get Broha or Marshall there.

Ojomo looks to me like someone who just might become a star in the NFL. Like Jim said above, you don’t allow those guys to disappear so you can save a spot for a #4 running back or a #7 wide receiver. I’d keep both of the youngsters if I had to do so and not bat an eyelash.

    • GOAT56 says:

The point of my post wasn’t anything on Ojomo upside. I don’t know if he has star upside but maybe so. I think Tracy has upper tier pass rushing talents and has already shown it in his limited opportunities against legit NFL players. The only thing I’m questioning on Ojomo is how effective he will vs better talent. He played at Miami and came out as a senior but didn’t dominate, I think its fair to question how he will play against better talent. IMO if you cut Tracy to keep Ojomo you better be sure Ojomo can contribute.

Also as a 4th DE you are mostly a special teams player. Tracy has excelled in that role and I question if Ojomo can do the same.

      • fanfor55years says:

        All legitimate points.

But the kid has something. And at Miami he wasn’t learning from Osi, Tuck and JPP. He seems to have absorbed and copied some of their moves. I cannot say he WILL be able to play well against starting offensive linemen, but it sure looks that way.

What I CAN say is that both Ojomo and Tracy (and Marshall and Broha too) look better to me than Tollefson, as does Trattou, so we have definitely upgraded that position no matter what happens by tomorrow.

        • GOAT56 says:

I agree Tracy and Ojomo are upgrades at the #4 and #5 DEs. Plus Osi and Tuck are healthy. This is a far cry from how we went into the Redskin game last year at DE.

      • BigBlueGiant says:

Hey all, been a while. been reading, but havent decided to chime in.

Just wanted to point out something about Ojomo. He missed the ’09 season with a broken jaw at the U. He’s been there since ’07 and was denied 6th year eligibility by the NCAA.

he only started a few games at DE in his final season. played mostly at DT, Which is most likely why his production numbers as a pass rusher are not there.

anyway, team is looking good. my prediction, 11-5, first in the NFC east, making another run at the SB.

        GO BLUE.

        • BigBlueGiant says:

BTW, Tracy should be very worried. Personally, i’ve seen more out of Craig Marshall and Ojomo than tracy has ever shown.

I know people like Tracy, but i think the right play is to IR him and let Marshall And Ojomo earn their keep.

          • GOAT56 says:

Tracy was SLB and just occasionally lined up at DE. When did he made plays.

Ojomo shows some real talent. Marshall is just another in the Tollefson, Trattou, Brota mold. Hustle guys with a little pass rush skills. Tracy and Ojomo show real pass rush skills.

            • BigBlueGiant says:

The only thing i’ve ever seen of Tracy besides his name constantly on the injury report is ONE sack.

Marshall is in on a ton of plays. He ‘s quick off the edge and can stop the run. He’s improved leaps and bounds from where he was last year.

I’m all for tracy’s release. And if Marvin Austin doesn’t stop getting injured, he will be in the same boat next year.

              • GOAT56 says:

Yes, but luckily the coaches have seen Tracy. Tracy produced one sack in his one game vs starters. You don’t cut guys that can play for being injured. You cut guys that are JAGs like Trattou who are injured. Being a high level pass rusher and quality special teams player is worth a lot. I’m aware that Ojomo could possibly beat out Tracy but Marshall? No chance.

                • BigBlueGiant says:

The coaches have seen Marshall too. And while Tracy rides the bike, Marshall is out there giving it his 100%.

Just because Tracy made one swim move past a starter all of a sudden he’s a lock for the team? I just can’t see it being possible with the production of every other player. Even if it has been against the 2nd and 3rd units. It doesn’t matter.

I see Tracy being IR’d another year or possibly being cut.

And yes, I do think Marshall can be a productive player.

  3. fanfor55years says:

Two really great things that happened last night were that Adrien Robinson looked like a player already and can definitely help this season, and Justin Tryon looked very good and competed as he did just before his arm was broken last season.

Barden’s performance was obviously good (but he is still more a Harold Carmicheal type than a Plaxico Burress type….Plax was a better athlete and could get open more quickly and do more once he caught the ball) and he can help.

    No muffed punts!!

Weatherford continues to look like a great weapon. Tynes looks excellent. DeOssie looked fabulous on special teams.

Jones made some really nice plays and has made a decision about who to cut extremely hard.

Rivers and Williams looked very good. Blackburn was solid. Herzlich made a few nice individual plays in space and did a pretty good job of smelling out which hole the runs were headed toward. Hill looks like a potentially very good deep safety a la KP. Rolle, Bernard, KP, Joseph, Webster…all look absolutely ready for Dallas.

I think we will see a magnificent defensive performance next Wednesday night.

And, oh yeah, Nicks and Cruz and Eli are already on the same page.

  4. GOAT56 says:

    F55 -

Re Randle I don’t think it’s accurate to judge him based on last night. I think he like several other just didn’t come to play. Everyone knows it’s the 4th preseason game. I think what he can contribute was shown last week. While we still could miss MM early I think we will eventually not miss him.

    • fanfor55years says:

All I can tell you is that he was slow off the line, looked extremely uncertain in his reads, and didn’t get open. He looked bad. That NFL-ready stuff was nice to hear, but I don’t believe it now that I’ve watched him closely. He may be a terrific receiver, eventually. He isn’t now. So I think Mario will be sorely missed, particularly early in the season.

  5. GmenMania says:

Paysinger and Dwayne Hendricks led the Giants with six tackles each. … Matt Broha and Craig Marshall, who started at the defensive end with Jason Pierre-Paul Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyoira out, both had 1 1-2 sacks.

    http://scores.espn.go.com/nfl/recap?gameId=320829019

I hadn’t realized that Hendricks and Paysinger each had that many tackles; also, Reese is going to have a tough time deciding which DEs to keep.

    • fanfor55years says:

Hendricks and Paysinger had a lot of tackles but neither was all that impressive. Neither was at all bad, but neither, IMO, guaranteed a roster spot for himself.

The only guys who clearly used last night to secure a job were Tryon and Barden. Add Ojomo, who secured a place in the league, whether for the Giants or elsewhere.

  6. fanfor55years says:

No one has mentioned Bennett. Very disappointing game last night. Dropped an easy ball. Didn’t help enough on blocks to prevent Eli from getting hit hard when Petrus and Locklear couldn’t deal with an early pass rush.

He needs to play better. Looked like he didn’t have his head in the game, and was hearing it from Mike Pope on the sidelines in the first quarter. If I’m the jury I have to say that after last night I’m still out and not ready for a verdict.

    • GOAT56 says:

I think guys like Bennett and Randle weren’t ready to play. Even Eli and Webster didn’t seem as into it. That play that Eli missed to Cruz didn’t generate the normal Eli reaction. While Webster had a lack luster effort tackling. Emotion is an important part of football and I just think quite a few of players didn’t have it last night.

We interrupt this exile to bring you this special news bulletin:

Adewale Ojomo WILL make the Giants roster.

And, no, it has nothing to do with how he’s performed against the various grocery squads this preseason. It has everything to do with his measurables, which are as follows:

    6’4 270 lbs. 81 5/8″ wingspan 4.7 40

For comparison’s sake, here are JPP’s:

    6’3 280 lbs. 81″ wingspan. 4.7 40

Not saying he’s the next JPP. Merely pointing out that he’s the EXACT prototype of what Reese looks for in a pass rusher. Big bodied, long-armed, good speed for their size. Many of us (myself included) thought he would be targeting one in the draft in the person of, say, a Chandler Jones. Well, that didn’t happen – but it looks like he got himself a pretty decent consolation prize in Ojomo. No way he looks that gift horse in the mouth.

And, oh yeah, seems Ojomo was also asked to shift to defensive tackle in his junior year at Miami. Not only did this this depress his pass rushing numbers and (likely) hurt his draft stock it also speaks well of his versatility, a trait that the Giants covet – especially edge rushers who have shown the ability to play inside.

    Case closed.

And with that said, I will now resume sitting shiva for Joel Reinders.

    • BigBlueGiant says:

Ojomo also missed over a year of football due to a broken jaw that he received in a looker room fight with a teammate.

      See my post above.

    • fanfor55years says:

Reinders? Didn’t you hear that the Arctic ice flows were breaking up too radically this summer? Joel was up there chopping so he could get back to the North Pole. He made the mistake of thinking Rogers was Santa so rushed down here because of mistaken identity. When it was cleared up that Shaun has no beard and had lost too much weight anyway, Joel realized his mistake and headed back before The Turk even got to him. Don’t cry for Mr. Reinders. Soon he’ll be back in his harness and doing what he was born to do. In any case, the team had some indication there was a problem when they started sled drills in camp and he insisted on pulling them instead of pushing. All straightened out now and all parties live happily ever after.

  8. fanfor55years says:

Well, I’ll top off this discussion by saying that Dan, and the rest of us, have not said the one, most important thing about last night’s game: no one was hurt. I saw Paysinger limping a little at one point but he played later. So unlike last preseason, we didn’t suffer badly this time around in games that don’t count. Good thing, because we had enough practice injuries to fill a trainer’s room past capacity.

    • JimStoll says:

of course we need to get through this last week of practice — this is when Goff and Austin were fatally injured last year

  9. GOAT56 says:

RT @AdamSchefter NFLPA Agreed to move trade deadline back and the new IR rule.

    • GOAT56 says:

Huge win for us! Huge! This will apply to either TT or Austin and save us a roster spot. So maybe we can really keep both Tracy and Ojomo or really keep 8 LBs. This really helps TC/JR with the roster!

  10. JimStoll says:

Paul Dotini thinks Ojomo makes the roster instead of Tracy
