After undergoing offseason knee surgery, New York Giants defensive tackle Chris Canty had been slow in his recovery. For that reason, it came as no real surprise to anyone when the team placed him on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list on Monday. However, Canty did not share similar expectations, and was caught off guard when informed he would miss the first six weeks of the season.
"Well, it doesn’t matter how I feel about it," Canty said. "I was brought here to do a job and right now they don’t feel it’s in the best interests of the football team for me to be playing so that’s what it is."
Asked if he thinks Injured Reserve (IR) is an eventual possibility, Canty simply said "If you were to ask me would I start season on PUP, I’d say there’s no chance. But here I am."
The extent of Canty's knee injury remains a bit of a mystery. There's been no information on what was done, where it was done or even exactly when it was done. All anyone seems to know is that it was done and now he's on PUP.
Although he could not confirm the rumors, Mike Garafolo of The Star-Ledger tweeted earlier today that he had heard through the grapevine that Canty underwent the dreaded microfracture surgery. But again, that's merely speculation at this point and there's little evidence to support it … other than being placed on PUP, obviously.
Through it all, Canty insists he's feeling better now than he did during the Giants' stretch run a season ago.
"I stand by the position my knee is better than it was November, December, January of last season. But ultimately this was a decision that was made in the best interest of the football team," Canty said.
Despite resistance from #99, Big Blue opted to shut him down and there's no backsies in the game of football. Canty can't be activated until October 16th at the earliest.

It does sound a little like Steve Smith about his knee when he was considering re-signing. But unlike the Eagles we are not listening to the player and playing it safe. Canty feels like he knows his body and wants to play. I don’t blame him but JR/TC made the right decision for the team on all fronts with this move IMO.
It’s like anything else. If you aren’t very forthcoming then people will speculate. This injury was always rather mysterious. Unlike most others the details were not released. Naturally stories will abound. It’s human nature.
I wish we’d just know whether or not it was microfracture surgery or not. It certainly sounds like it was because of the slow progress he’s making. It didn’t sound like a routine cleanup to me. I just hope he’s ready to play when he can be activated and that he plays like he has in the past.
I feel strangely optimistic at DT. Love Canty. But Landfill Joseph and Rocky are going to be fine, Thomas/Kuhn are going to be quality depth. We aren’t better without Canty, but we’re not worse either- for whatever my opinion is worth.
It’s hard to understand how he’d be surprised by being PUP’d. I can certainly buy disappointment. But he had to at least see PUP as a possibility. He’s yet to practice.
Yeah, that part was a bit odd. Obviously any player who loves the game will be disappointed, but if you can’t play…and haven’t so far…then PUP is a no-brainer. I was hoping he’d have been close to returning and could have possibly only missed a week or 2, but that doesn’t seem to be the case (obviously). Luckily we’ve got decent depth — at least compared to other teams.
TroyThorne,
I agree with you on Douglas. Haven’t seen anything outside of a long punt return aided by two (2) holding penalties. I’m fairly certain he is replaceable.
Dirt, I adopted Douglas as my G101 HOFer at the start of camp so it isimportant he make the final 53
He caught punts cleanly. Sounds simple but not one else did.
Not only that but he ran straight lines and didn’t dance around like crazy hoping to make a play that obviously wasn’t there. I’m all for keeping him on the roster because he does fill a need as well as provide depth. PR/WR (#6 or 7, depending on how many are kept)/ST … sounds good to me. And like you said there weren’t a lot of guys who could even catch the ball cleanly so he’s got that working in his favor.
Actually I don’t think douglas is going to make the team it’s close. I think it depends on what happens with TT IMO. If TT is on the roster with the DTs we need to keep, douglas has to go. Plus the issue with Douglas is essentially his upside is Hixon with less speed. Now Hixon might not be what he was but he can handle punts. I think what the play of Randle and Barden Hixon won’t get all the 3rd WR snaps and could even get passed. So he should be free to be our sure handed PR with some return abilities.
Honestly don’t see where the “TT could get cut” stuff is coming from. He’s a solid corner who has performed well for us in the past- just a few months ago, I recall most here being very excited for his return. Don’t see how he loses a spot on the roster, especially if he will be running in the next week or two. His contract is team-friendly and it looks like he will play for us this season.
And we’re back…
Wooo!
From where? Is this a reference to a player who has been out but is now returning? Hope so.
No. It’s a reference to the fact that the site has been down for 18 hours and it is now back online.
Glad I had to do some work….that would have been frustrating. Okay, welcome back to Dan and the boys (and girls)! I missed the whole thing.
…and you just happened to sign on 4 minutes after it was all fixed? You really are Mr. Sagacity.
So, Nicks is going to play tomorrow.
I hope not too much. We’ll need him healthy for Dallas.
uut
I see some of the Cowboys will be returning (much like Giants101). I don’t care, as long as Witten isn’t one of them. Without him Romo has no reliable safety valve that he can use to offset the pass rush. No Witten, no win for the ‘Boys.
