New York Giants’ Terrell Thomas Says He’s Targeting Week One Return

By Dan Benton

As recently as Thursday, there had been some talk about New York Giants cornerback Terrell Thomas inevitably landing on Injured Reserve (IR) due to the teams injury situation. It was also wondered aloud if the team might consider waiving him if his knee is unable to holdup over time. On Saturday, Thomas put both of those thoughts and a lot of the speculation to rest when he revealed that he's progressing and still targeting a week one return.

"Like I mentioned before I just aggravated my knee; it feels strong and no swelling. I have [been] running in the pool lately to keep active. I am getting back to my old self; my goal is to still play in the season's opener. I have been working my butt off every day; I have been in the weight room everyday and been watching film," Thomas wrote on his blog.

Returning against the Dallas Cowboys may be wishful thinking, but certainly not outside the realm of possibility. Following Thomas' diagnosis of an "aggravated" ACL, head coach Tom Coughlin called it the best case scenario, while a timetable for his return was set at 3-8 weeks.

If Thomas were able to return against the Cowboys on September 5th, that would put him at four weeks and two days after his diagnosis. Odds are, as hopeful as he may be and barring any additional setbacks, the cornerback is more likely to return in week three against the Carolina Panthers.

With rookie Jayron Hosley dealing with turf toe and Prince Amukamara expected to miss some time with a high ankle sprain, the Giants could really use a healthy Thomas on the field as soon as possible. But if we've seen anything in recent years, it's that when you rush back from an injury, the next stop tends to be season-ending IR.

The good news here is that, at least in Thomas' outlook, IR is not going to come into play.

    OL Matt McCants
    Defense DL Adewale Ojomo
    Dwayne Hendricks
    LB Jake Muasau

    JoJo Nicolas

    Notes:
Due to the play of Kuhn, Benard and Thomas I think we will keep Canty on PUP. Kuhn showed he has real ability and not the type of player your PS because he’s more ready then expected.

TT due to the Prince injury is off the roster either via release or IR. We can only hold so many spots.

I included 7 WRs which surprises me but I though both Barden and Douglas played their way onto the roster. Douglas being our #1 PR in the 3rd preseason game to me means that’s his expected role. Jernigan hasn’t pl ayed badly as a WR it’s more other have played better. He’s a 3rd round pick, I think he gets at least one more year. Hixon I can’t see being cut. He’s Mr reliable around a lot of youth. I do wonder if Barden or Jernigan is traded for OL or CB help.

I left Petrus of off the roster. I have seen the bad practice reports and previous game reports from many sources but I still though Petrus showed enough last year. I was wromg, Petrus struggled a lot vs players that will be cut in a few days. I think I will lose my long term argument with Norm because while Cordle isn’t anything great he can play center/guard and can’t be any worse at guard than Petrus. Capers was just as bad as Petrus.

    • norm says:

Maybe we can meet up at Met Life this year so you can join me in a rousing chant of “COR-DLE! COR-DLE! COR-DLE!”

    • GOAT56 says:

I forgot to add that Sash is on the suspended list so doesn’t count. I would expect him to replace a DT when eligible.

Wow this TT news completely changes my DB projection. Of course TT if he’s within the first month has to be included. But who knows at this point. While I’m sure TT is more optimistic than us, that sounds like much sooner than mid season.

If that’s the case then we can only carry 7 WRs. I guess Holsey or Hixon can handle PRs. Then that knocks Douglas off the roster to PS and either DePalma or Bing off of PS.

Petrus really has been that bad this offseason. Norm and I had a long discusion about it months ago and the fact that I’m including Cordle over Petrus shows just how disappointing he’s been. If he’s just an ok backup at guard why not keep an ok player tha can play guard and center. I thought Petrus was a better player than he’s been all training camp and preseason.

      • Luv2Salsa says:

Does Sash’s suspension kick in before after the roster deadline? I think after, which makes getting to 53 a bit tougher.

  3. norm says:

This whole saga is reminding me more and more of the Steve Smith mess last year.

On the one hand you have a one time Pro Bowl talent coming off a serious knee injury, facing an uncertain future in the NFL, and eager to get back on the field and prove himself.

On the other hand, you have team doctors cautioning patience and counseling up to a half season’s worth of rest for the knee.

We all saw how it worked out for Smith last year. Hopefully, the Giants desperation at cornerback does not tempt them into allowing T2 to make the same mistake.

    • GOAT56 says:

It makes me feel better that we originally said 3-8 weeks. Steve Smith played in week one when we said PUP. He might be pushing himself but I don’t think he’s being reckless like Mr. Smith.

    • Krow says:

Are there any similar situations where players made if back from multiple knee injuries like TT’s?

  4. Krow says:

OK, facts it is. Prince was the 19th pick in the draft that year. Many considered him THE best DB of the class.

    2011

Holds out. Last #1 pick to sign.
Gets to camp a week late and promptly breaks foot in first practice.
Rehabs almost the entire year, but heals up in time to be part of sub-coverage packages in our Superbowl run.
Play is spotty, but does show some improvement.

    2012

    Unspectacular camp.
Plays against the Jags and is beaten like a cheap drum.
    Plays credible against over-matched Jets.
Collapses like a folding chair while making a routine tackle against the Bears and is carted off.

I don’t know what’s going on with Prince … but his production is virtually zero. Maybe it’s confidence … maybe he’s just one of those guys who take a while to adjust to the NFL. The jury is still out, and I don’t feel that anyone is writing him off. But if he was a UDFA he’d be struggling to avoid IR right now. And that’s a damning thing to say about a mid-first round pick. So I totally get why people are angry and frustrated with him.

Here’s the company he’s in … as our first selection …

    David Wilson
    * Prince *
    JPP
    Hakeem Nicks
    Kenny Phillips
    Aaron Ross
    Kiwi
    C-Web
    Eli

Bottom line … he should be playing a lot better.

    • Dan BentonDan Benton says:

Making a routine tackle? That’s not when Prince was injured. He hurt himself on the play prior when a Bears player rolled up on his ankle. He toughed out the next play before being taken off.

      • Krow says:

I said he collapsed making a routine tackle… not that he was hurt making it. I don’t think they’ve said yet exactly when he got hurt … probably the play before. Which was also unspectacular.

        • Dan BentonDan Benton says:

He collapsed after making it because he was hurt and tried to play on it. The reverse prior to that play was unspectacular, but any human being alive would have been injured had they been in Prince’s situation there. Watch the replay. He’s engaging a Bears player and doesn’t see the guy rolling up on his leg since he has his eyes on the ball carrier. These type of injuries happen. That’s football.

          • Krow says:

Several of our top picks have been hurt. Kenny … Aaron … Kiwi … Hakeem. Yet they still managed to play at a relatively high level.

Prince may come back in a few weeks and light it up. He’s got that potential. He’s had just a year in the NFL. It’s not like he’s had multiple chances. But tell me you’re not concerned? His level of play isn’t high … and he’s hurt a lot.

    • Krow says:

And it goes without saying, but I want Prince to play great. I hope he has an amazing career. I’m rooting for him. It’s just damn frustrating.

    • Dirt says:

I understand your perspective. However, I can’t get on a guy for looking rough in preseason game #1, and I can’t get on a guy who’s been injured twice. And not the sally injuries like a sore hamstring. We’re talking broken bones and having his ankle rolled up on.

Sure, he should be performing at a higher level.

I would say just be a little patient. He’s seen one disappointing season of real games. Hasn’t seen season 2 yet.

      Just my unpopular perspective.

      • Krow says:

Patience is definitely called for … and is the best course of action. I can’t say it often enough … no one is writing him off. But it’s troublesome. He should be showing something of that vast potential we all know he has inside him. There’s a problem, and it needs to get fixed. And it’s not going to get fixed if we deny there is one.

        • norm says:

Again, I’m not at all clear what the problem here is.

That he was not NFL ready after missing all of training camp and preseason and then thrust onto the field for the last six regular season games of 2011?

That he has been up and down in the first three preseason games of 2012?

And why should those two facts outweigh the fact that he played well during the 2011 postseason, including holding one of the high powered Packers best receivers, Jordy Nelson, in check?

To my eyes, he’s exactly where one would expect a young player with very limited real game experience to be in his career arc to be.

          • norm says:

Also: if folks want to bang on Prince for getting hurt after a blocker rolled up on his ankle, they should be equally critical of Hosley for injuring himself while hot-dogging his way into the end zone.

Oh yeah, I forgot… Hosley has “swag” so he gets a pass.

            • Krow says:

The problem is that he’s not playing at the level that the 19th pick in the draft should be playing at.

Unlike many of the posters here I have no special knowledge or sources of information. But if I had to hazard a guess as to why … I’d say he’s having trouble picking up the coverage complexities of a top NFL defense. He can’t rely on his physical gifts alone any more.

This is causing him to think instead of instinctively reacting. Which in turn eats away at your confidence, slows you down, and makes you even more tentative and indecisive.

Then you add in a couple injuries. Now you can’t even work your way out of it. So when you do finally get on the field you press yourself even more.

The stress ratchets up and you get even tighter … and more injury prone.

If this were golf they’d say he ‘had the yips’. The only way out of this cycle is to play … to get comfortable … to relax. The coaching staff has their work cut out for them.

Just my opinion … but you asked.

    • norm says:

Well, if we want to keep this strictly factual it’s should be noted that Prince’s injury did not occur on the play when he “collapsed like a folding chair while making a routine tackle against the Bears.”

It actually happened the play before when his ankle was rolled up on by a Bears blocker.

That he was able to come back on the next play, close on Brandon Marshall and make a perfect form tackle to prevent him from running for a first down AFTER incurring a high ankle sprain hardly squares with the narrative that he’s a soft “p*ssy”

And I also find it curious that folks are willing to downplay Prince’s blanketing of Jordy Nelson in the playoff while making a great deal over some shaky play in preseason games.

  5. Dirt says:

    Great news.

Giants/Cowboys has tended too be a shootout over the last few years regardless of who’s manning the secondary, so, no point in rushing back. It’s a marathon, noit a sprint.

    • BillyS says:

I just hope Witten is out for week 1. I really think he’s the difference maker for them. Without him their O-line is even worse and Romo doesn’t have his safety blanket. I don’t see how we’d have fewer than 5 sacks against them.

As for TT, I don’t think he should rush back too soon. A lot of guys “feel good”, but that doesn’t mean they’re ready to play. The last thing we need is for him to rush back and tear something again.

      • GOAT56 says:

did you not watch last night? I don’t care if the Cowboys have everyone if we play well they are not beating us. Assuming we have Nicks, Hosley, Kiwi and Bradshaw all now appear to be expected to play.

  6. Krow says:

norm … yeah, TT is sadly reminiscent of Steve Smith. He wanted to play … who doesn’t. He found a dirtbag team that would let him. And that was that.

Compare to Kenny Phillips, who took the time to fully rehab himself.

Of course the wildcard is that this is the second go-round for TT.

  7. norm says:

Just a minor correction to GOAT’s roster projection above:

I believe Hendricks is no longer eligible for the PS as I think he’s already maxed out the three year limit for practice squad players.

I think this is the end of the line for his time with the Giants. And based on his play last night, no great loss. I saw him being pushed all over the field.

    • GOAT56 says:

I had heard other info but that makes sense if he’s 26. I think a different year he could make the roster but he’s just no better than the others though he had a good run.

  8. Chad Eldred says:

The polarization brigade is out in force. Wanting a guy to be on the field and play doesn’t mean you detest him or don’t think that he has talent. It means you want him to do what he is paid to do. Injuries are unfortunate and occur for a variety of reasons, but fans pay for tickets, merchandise, support advertisers, etc. It is a fan’s prerogative to be critical at times. It’s an emotionally charged game. Deal with it. I like Prince, but I’m not going to spend my Saturday afternoon making excuses for the guy. Time will tell. He will stay on the field and produce or go the way of Gerris Wilkinson. I think we are all hoping for the former.

    • norm says:

Of course, it’s a “fan’s prerogative” to be critical. like, dislike any players they choose for whatever reasons they choose. And to express their plaesure, displeasure et al any way they choose.

I tried to say as much in the last thread. If you happen to focus on Prince as the target of your ire, that’s your business. I’m not going to sit here and preach to you on the correct way in which to derive entertainment from your football pastime.

But to the degree that I come here expecting to find intelligent discussion on all matters Giants, I must say I have found precious little where Prince is concerned. And yes, it’s my prerogative to point out that much of what I’ve seen on the subject has been nothing more than a textbook case of confirmation bias. If you that makes me one of the leaders of the “polarization brigade,” then guilty as charged.

Kudos to Krow for making the effort to move the discussion forward from the realm of the purely emotional. He at least took the time to articulate the nature of his concerns. Although I thoroughly disagree with his reasoning, I nonetheless found it refreshing to read some commentary on the subject that was something other than the usual eighth grade invective.

      • Chad Eldred says:

Spare me the pseudo-intellectual condescension. Just a while ago you were enlightening us with your anecdote of Gabe Carmi and passing it off as rationale on how to build a roster. You string together a few points and then deride everyone’s eighth grade intellect. You’re a big fat nobody just like the rest of us.

        • norm says:

No need to make things personal, Chad.

Of course, I’m just another anonymous a-hole spouting his opinions on an internet forum that’s bee set up to allow people like me to spout their opinions.

OK, so I take the time to articulate the reasons behind my opinions. OK, so those posts sometimes tend to be long winded and frequently feature some 25 cent words. That’s just how I roll. If you find it all too pseudo intellectual and condescending, there’s always the scroll bar.

And, BTW, seeing as how took issue with the earlier post I made about Gabe Carimi, I’m curious to hear why you disagreed. You know, the whole back and forth, give and take kind of thing that is one of the main purposes of this forum.

  9. Krow says:

    Ramses tweets …

“Man I wish we won. But it was nice to get back in the paint”

  10. James Stoll says:

I’ll believe a Week 1 return only after I see it. He isn’t even practicing. He’s running but only in the pool. He’s out at least until Week 5. Nothing has changed

    • Krow says:

It’s wishful thinking. I still say he ends up on IR to save the roster spot. The TT situation has ‘sad story’ written all over it. It’ll be a wonder if he makes it back. Right now I’d be happy if he could just come off the bench in certain packages … but as it was pointed out, you don’t get paid millions for that. Not going to end well.
