As expected, the New York Giants have signed defensive tackle Marcus Thomas, who was said to "impress" during his workout and interview on Thursday morning, to a one-year deal.

"Thank god," Thomas tweeted following his workout.
Thomas, a fourth-round pick of the Broncos in 2007, is a much more suitable long-term replacement than are Oren Wilson and Carlton Powell, who were also officially signed today. More than just a camp body, Thomas is a quality 4-3 defensive tackle with 34 career starts (76 games played), in which he's collected 146 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble.
The 6'3'', 316 lbs. Thomas struggled a bit in Josh McDaniels' 3-4 scheme (2009-2010), but showed his early career promise again when John Fox returned the team to a 4-3 (2011). However, after being offered only a one-year deal this offseason, Thomas decided it would be in his best interest to test the market, believing a better contract would come his way.
At one point last season, there were rumors that Thomas wanted out of Denver and one of his potential desired destinations was in New York with Big Blue. Match made.

RT @NYPost_Schwartz Not good news for Will Beatty who Coughlin said has been “shut down” again because of back issue. #NYG
Coughlin says Marvin Austin will need more tests. Wasn’t nearly as positive about the situation as Austin was.
I wasn’t worried about Beatty before but now I am. This is a huge deal now. Before everything could be attributed to the recovery process but this is without question a setback. I guess those that were really concerned from the start were right. I guess it might be one more year of Diehl at LT.
This news about Austin makes sense with the number of DT signings. If we weren’t concerned I think three wouldn’t have been signed.
We can live with Austin missing significant time. The Beatty news is really bad. Thank goodness they brought in Locklear. I liked the signing when they made it. I like it even more now.
But I won’t pretend to be sanguine. I’ve said all along that my confidence that the O-line will be fine is entirely dependent upon Beatty being healthy and able to improve at least a bit on last season. Absent that they are incredibly vulnerable if they suffer an injury to Diehl or Locklear, or anyone else for that matter. Maybe we’d better start praying that Selvish Capers is better than so far indicated or that Mosley turns out to be the very rare rookie who can succeed at offensive tackle right from the start.
Actually our best hope is still that Beatty just had a scare but will be fine for the regular season. Lockear is fine as a fill in type but if he’s a starter for 16 games or even 10 we are in some trouble.
Sure that’s our best hope. And we’d better all start praying that’s what it is, because having Locklear and Diehl starting looks like a a short bet on long odds. And given what seems to be the case with that dope Petrus we really have way too little depth up there.
I hope Reese is looking around for reinforcements, because while Diehl and Locklear aren’t anything to write home about, if one of them is hurt we are really in uncharted territory.
Yes, I know Petrus plays guard. I mean we have way too little depth across the entire offensive line. And injuries DO happen.
It sure looks increasingly like Dwayne Hendricks is going to be a factor for us. And I now think that they will be unlikely to PUP Canty, meaning we will really be going with a 51-man roster to start the season because we have to save places for both Sash and Canty.
They cannot afford to allow Canty extra time when they have a fire drill at DT. The four who will start the season will probably be Joseph, Bernard, Thomas and Hendricks. Kuhn goes to the practice squad. Austin may be PUP’d and stowed away for six games and then quite possibly placed on IR unless they think TWO of the tackles aren’t up to the task and replace one with Canty (that happens early as someone is released between Bernard and Thomas) and another with Austin (that would be Hendricks, but I doubt they’d release him for a completely untested and not-ready Austin).
Austin can’t be PUP’d. I wish he could. So we could start the year with a 50 (TT, Canty, Austin) man roster though we have the Sash spot due to his suspension for 4 weeks. Canty might have to be kept on PUP just because of roster space. JR has a lot to consider.
Ouch, so really that makes it, effectively, only 49 because ordinarily they would only carry four DTs and now will probably have to carry five.
What a mess. This means curtains for Jones, probably means they’ll only carry five corners ((including Thomas, so CWebb, Thomas, Prince, Hosley and just one more) and one fewer player at running back or receiver (bad news, potentially, for both Scott and Brown, and not so great for DePalma, Stanback, Douglass, and possibly even Barden).
Giants’ Will Beatty ‘back on the shelf’ with back issue
Will Beatty slept in his own bed the past two nights. Let’s get that out of the way right off the bat.
Regardless, the Giants’ left tackle did not practice today because of a continuing back issue that has had him in and out (though mostly out) of practice this spring and summer.
“He’s back on the shelf,” coach Tom Coughlin said after practice. “He’s back in the training room.”
Asked about Beatty’s availability for Saturday’s game against the Jets, a clearly frustrated Coughlin replied, “I have no idea.”
Beatty is dealing with an aggravated sciatic nerve he believed he could get under control if he managed it well. Coughlin was under the impression Beatty’s recent return to action meant he would stay on the field.
“That’s what we were hoping for, that’s what we thought would happen,” Coughlin said. “They evaluated him last night and they felt if he kept going along the way he is now, he only would’ve gotten worse and worse.”
All of the above is, uh, not very good, people. One can only wonder if it means David Diehl will at least start getting reps on the left side. And yeah, I hear you folks on the talk of bringing Kareem McKenzie back as well. We’ll see on all of that. Stay tuned.

Clifton from GB and McNeil from SD are two possible vets. Both have big health concerns but if they are cleared they make sense. Also the Andrew’s brothers and even Ugoh might be on our radar as well. Even if we wait to see how Beatty is progressing to actually sign someone, it seems now is the time to do some due dilligence on our options.
Every team has thin spots … and this one is paper thin. Lucky for Beatty he has that fashion gig to fall back on.
Firstly, I absolutely love the Marcus Thomas signing. There’s just something about him I really like when it comes to the run game. I feel we have enough guys who can get to the QB, but our run defense can be a bit porous at times. I think he’s going to be a great fit.
Secondly, the news on Beatty is terrible. If he misses time then this will be a devastating blow. We’re thin as is, but we were hoping for Beatty to finally lock down the LT job. There’s no way Diehl can consistently play over there anymore.
