DT Marcus Thomas Will Visit with New York Giants on Thursday

With Shaun Rogers (blood clot) and Martin Parker (back) both out for the season, the New York Giants will continue their quest to seek replacements on Thursday. And despite signing both Oren Wilson and Carlton Powell, the team will host former Denver Broncos defensive tackle Marcus Thomas.

Thomas, a fourth-round pick of the Broncos in 2007, is a much more suitable long-term replacement than are Wilson and Powell. More than just a camp body, Thomas is a quality 4-3 defensive tackle with 34 career starts (76 games played), in which he's collected 146 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble.

The 6'3'', 316 lbs. Thomas struggled a bit in Josh McDaniels' 3-4 scheme (2009-2010), but showed his early career promise again when John Fox returned the team to a 4-3 (2011). However, after being offered only a one-year deal this offseason, Thomas decided it would be in his best interest to test the market, believing a better contract would come his way.

At one point last season, there were rumors that Thomas wanted out of Denver and one of his potential desired destinations was in New York with Big Blue. Now, without a team and the Giants in need of a defensive tackle, it may be the perfect match.

With no official word from New York on the test results for Marvin Austin (back), and Chris Canty still on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, this visit may merely be a precaution. Then again, it may not. Stay tuned to Giants 101 throughout the day as we update both the status of Austin and Thomas' visit.

    He’s as good as signed.

I’d love to sign this guy. He hasn’t really offered much as a penetrating DT, but he’s a big guy who can clog up holes. That’s basically what I expected from Rogers. He’s a run stuffer and could be had for cheap.
