Cuts Loom for On-The-Bubble New York Giants Players

By Jen Polashock

While the NFL fans of the world are frothing and chomping at the preseason bit, there are some that aren’t. Soon, the line: “Coach wants to see you in his office” will be uttered to players putting all they’ve got on the line.

The first bit of roster-trimming -during offseason- is prior to training camps where most of the now 90-man roster (up from 80) is on the active list. However, in just about two weeks -under NFL bylaws- first “active” (hark back to this word repeatedly, later) list cuts are on the Tuesday after the third preseason weekend: August 27, by 4:00pm EST. The roster must be slimmed down to 75 active players, so there are now 15 men fighting for their Big Blue lives in the next few weeks.

Those slashes that bear the “final” tag are set for Friday, August 31st, by 9:00pm EST. 32 NFL teams reduce to a 53-man active/inactive roster – that’s 37 fewer members that they entered training camp with. Only eight players (if eligible) can be placed on the team’s practice squad (not active players and not securing them to the team – meaning they’re not “safe” from another team’s claiming).

You may notice that this year’s cut-downs are one day earlier than normal since the World Champion New York Football Giants vs. Dallas Cowboys regular season opener was changed to a day earlier: Wednesday, September 5th (instead of the obligatory/annual Thursday opener).

Some FYI: Those eight Practice Squad Guys and Players on Injured Reserve (IR) and Physically-Unable-to-Perform (PUP) lists (since the beginning of July) count towards the 90-man limit. Since teams clearly want to take full advantage of the quantity and quality of active players on the roster before first cuts, they use waivers (remember?). Revisiting this briefly, in order to get an injured player not to count against the time-of-the-season limit (while said player is on IR/PUP during the offseason), is to waive the player with an injury designation (waived/injured) but this leaves them exposed to be picked up by another team. The Jake Ballard decision won’t be revisited. We all know why the Giants attempted this “waive” when they did.

A team will not usually waive a player on Physically-Unable since they consider it temporary and expect him to come back and be of value to the team at some point during the season (even though they do count against the ultimate 90-man limit—not “active”), unless they are going to miss significant time into the season due to their injury (Reserve/PUP). Players must be placed on PUP prior to training camp. Once they begin actual camp practice they are no longer eligible to be placed on the PUP list (Think DB Terrell Thomas). Most players who are on active/PUP will be removed sometime during camp (if healthy enough). Teams would clearly rather use this roster spot until said player is healthy rather than risk losing them to a waiver claim. Easy enough, eh?

So while the huge burst of excitement is there for the fans, it’s not necessarily there for all involved. Consider the on-the-bubble guys and those that are in the thick of things simply due to the competition being so healthy at their skill position. This is truly what preseason football is all about: one last fighting tryout to be considered NFL active on game day.

I hope Robinson comes along quickly…because the Giants aren’t going to pay enough to keep Bennett after the year he’s gonna have.

I think Trattou is a good player and definitely good enough to make this roster. Is he PS eligible? Anyways with Tracy’s pass rushing ability I think we have to keep him ahead of Trattou. We could keep 5 DEs but with “the big 3? DEs healthy having 5 DEs seems unnecessary. We still have Kiwi who can help in a pinch plus I though Marshall and even #54 flashed PS ability. With the “extra” for TT, our depth at LB and maybe needing an extra spot to keep one or two of our OL draft picks I think DE is an area where we can consolidate.

DT is going to be interesting. Hendrinks did flash. We have 2 proven vets. A talented but raw draft pick. Then we have the Canty situation. The tricky thing about Canty is we really can’t even see him practice if we are confident in his health because then the PUP option goes away. It just seems to makes sense that Canty is going to start the year on PUP. If that’s the case to me you keep Joseph and Austin as givens. Then Rodgers or Benard and Kahn or Hendricks, I don’t think it makes sense to keep 2 vets or 2 youngsters.

The only thing that really concerned me last night is using Rolle to start at nickel. To me Rolle is the fall back option. Kind of like Hixon with punt returns last year. Use the preseason to let Hosley, Tryon and who ever else see if they can handle the slot CB. If no one steps up then I have no problem going back to Rolle but we should at least try to find a better answer first.

Don’t sleep on Markus Kuhn. He’s raw but I see him being faster and more in shape than some of the DT that look like they spent the offseason eating full hams.
Trattou IS PS eligible, but will they put him there again and put Adrian Tracy ahead of him (Tracy is also PS eligible). I think this happens (as health in delpth is KEY).
Once I saw Rolle on the line in man (at camp) I was like “uhoh”. I’m hoping someone steps up enough to get Rolle free again…

      • GOAT56 says:

        Thx for the PS info.

I’m not sleeping on Kahn. I just think if Canty goes on PUP we need a vet and a young guy to go along with Joseph and Austin. I favor Kahn but Hendricks played well enough last night that I can’t discount him. We have enough depth that it will be interesting even who makes PS. Especially at DL and WR.

One general thought about our team. It’s amazing how much faster this team is than 2-3 years ago. A team like Philly is thought to be a lot faster than us but besides QB we can match their speed through our roster. The last 2 drafts have really increased our speed across the board. We we will have a roster with possibly the 2 fastest RBs to ever suit up in Blue. I think the speed adjustment JR made the last few years has really shown up in our coverage units. I think see even more big plays on offense this year with some actually coming via the running game. I think with our pass rush, the athleticism at LB, speed at CB and the quality of our safeties I expect us to force a ton of turnovers this year

    Philly should be scared:

And left tackle Demetress Bell has been dropped to the second team after a poor Thursday performance, and King Dunlap is working as the first-team left tackle.

Got all that? Let’s take the last part first.

Bell is the tackle the Eagles signed to replace star left tackle Jason Peters after Peters tore his Achilles tendon (twice) this offseason. His demotion is obviously not a good sign for the Eagles’ ability to replace Peters, but it’s also not necessarily permanent. Recall last year, when first-round pick Danny Watkins wasn’t ready to start the opener at right guard but was able to ascend to a starter’s role during the season. Offensive line coach Howard Mudd’s schemes can be difficult to pick up, and it’s possible that Bell needs more time. There are 29 days until the Eagles’ regular-season opener in Cleveland, so he has that time if he needs it. And if he needs more, the Eagles (as they showed with Watkins) will give it to him. Dunlap has worked for a year in Mudd’s system as a backup and spot starter, and I’m sure the Eagles feel they can get by with him there for a couple of weeks if need be. If Bell never gets any better, and Dunlap has to be their 16-game starter at left tackle, the Eagles could have a big problem. But today’s news isn’t “Bell out for season,” it’s “Bell needs more work.”

Wow, and I thought our line had the potential to look bad … that’s just brutal. It’s still better than when they had Justice starting, though. I’ll miss Osi racking up 6 sacks in a game vs them. Looks like he’ll only get 4 with that current line :(

      • GOAT56 says:

I said that early this week. Most of the upper tier teams have OL concerns as bad or worse than ours. We are not nearly as bad off as some think when compared to other teams.

        • BillyS says:

If Beatty is healthy then I think we definitely have enough depth to feel comfortable — compared to other teams. I’m a Baas supporter so I don’t have any concerns with him. But yes, things could always be worse and other teams are a good example of that.

          • GOAT56 says:

I think we have 7 OL players we can count on now adding Lockear (who was good last night) and Petrus to our starters. If Brewer, Mosley or even a player like Cordle and really solify our depth. Cordle is probably our 8 best OL player right now but I think he’s in trouble do to our draft picks and Boothe’s ability to play center.

  5. Luv2Salsa says:

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe after 9am Aug 31st, ANY eligible player that is cut by a team may be signed to any other team’s 8 man practice squad.

So cutting someone, with the hope of signing him to your practice squad is no sure thing. Especially if the guy’s got talent and just needs a little more work.

    • GOAT56 says:

I don’t know if the date is correct but a PS player has to be cut first so any team could sign them.

      • Jen Polashock says:

Pretty much. It’s kinda like a waivers thing without the actual waivers process…kinda why it’s IMPORTANT to really focus & decide who you wanna risk & put on the practice squad (like Ryan Grant sveral years ago).

        • GOAT56 says:

That’s why I can see I minor trade for a position like RB, OL or even WR if we don’t like of end of the roster players at those positions. I can really see trading a player like Paysinger. He seems too good to cut but a player like Jones makes more sense given or depth a WLB. I think Paysinger could be a player a team would be willing to get for a similar player at a different position. If we continue to struggle at PR, a backup WR and PR could be a player we look at. Kind of like when we aquired raynuad a few years ago. I know that didn’t work out then but I could see a similar move if Jernigan **** one more punt.

  6. kujo says:

There’s not a doubt in my mind that Hixon will be returning punts

    • GOAT56 says:

Even so given his injury history we need someone else TC is confident in. Or we will see a blackman sighting. J/K but the point is we need another player that can catch a punt and if it’s not Jernigan or Hosley that player might not be on our current roster.

  7. GOAT56 says:

Wow, talk about overvaluing a position!

    Panthers sign Jonathan Stewart

The Carolina Panthers have signed running back Jonathan Stewart to a five-year contract extension, the team announced Saturday.

The deal is worth $36.5 million and could reach a maximum of $42.5 million, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. It includes $22.5 million guaranteed, the source said.

“We are thrilled to be able to extend Jonathan for five additional years,” Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said in a statement. “He is a perfect fit for our organization. He is a playmaker who can make the difference in games and we have seen the impact he and DeAngelo Williams have had on our team.” The Panthers added fullback/tailback Mike Tolbert in free agency during the offseason, and the plan is to use him in tandem with Stewart and Williams.

Last July, Williams agreed to a five-year, $43 million deal that includes $21 million in guaranteed money.

A first-round pick in 2008, Stewart is the second leading rusher in franchise history with 3,500 yards. He also holds the club record for single-game rushing yards with 206 against the New York Giants on Dec. 27, 2009.

    • Krow says:

      That will haunt them.

      • BillyS says:

I like Stewart, but wow…they are sinking all of their money into the run game. Why don’t they save some of their cap room for their O-line, D-line, linebackers, DBs, and WRs?

  8. Remy says:

Finally caught up on all the threads today. Seeing a grown man act so needy makes me wince.

On the subject of Broha, I did say before the game I think he has a good chance to wind up on the PS, guy was a force for LA Tech, just never got the exposure.
On the subject of Perriloux, I’m seeing him get canned pretty hard on here, and I don’t think it’s entirely fair. The poor guy was running for his life behind a cardboard cut-out O’line, and still managed to put up a pretty decent stat line of 6/7 for 59 and 1 TD. I’m not under the impression that he’s going to beat Carr, that ain’t happening, but certainly keep the guy on the team (even if it’s to the PS and off 13 times) again.

Still early though, I didn’t get nearly as long a look at the guys I wanted to, especially not with the lousy grainy broadcast I was getting. I think there’s only a small amount we can set into stone after that game in terms of whether a guy is toast/will make the team. A lot more camp left, and 3 more games to play. It’s early stilll…

Watching the Jags coverage really makes me appreciate being a Giants fan. The overall knowledge base of those guys was pretty low, and that was just the announcers. If this is who the Jags have representing them, those poor silly idiots really don’t know what’s going on do they?

    • BillyS says:

If only we didn’t have so many LBs already or else I’d have picked Broha for G101 HOF.

      • Remy says:

He’s a DE, which means he almost certainly won’t beat out Trattou/Tracy for that 4th DE role, but I could see him winding up with the team on the PS. Keen to see more…

  9. Remy says:

And guys, it’s Markus Kuhn, not Kahn.

  10. norm says:

According to Mike Pereira, one of the replacement officials “actually got released midway through the last Lingerie Football League season as a referee.”

Hmmm… not fit to officiate games in the Lingerie Football League… but somehow good enough to referee in the National Football League.

America truly is the Land of Opportunity.

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/08/07/pereira-says-nfl-is-embellishing-the-credentials-of-replacement-officials/

    • BillyS says:

I really feel bad for that ref. No offense to the players, but I’d rather have a front row seat for the Lingerie Football League.
