One day of training camp does not a season make, but for New York Giants wide receivers Ramses Barden and Domenik Hixon, they've gotten off on the right foot here in 2012. Both players stood out on Friday, whether it was in passing drills or the in the case of Hixon, returning punts and making blocks.
A lot of doubt, some of it unwarranted, has surrounded Hixon as he attempts to return from his second consecutive ACL tear. He's been written off by many, but as we've said here at Giants 101, that's entirely too premature. He came back a season ago and made an immediate impact before re-injuring himself against the St. Louis Rams. Now, here in 2012, he's again come back, this time stronger than ever before, and immediately made his presence felt in practice.
While returning punts, Hixon showcased his quickness and decisiveness, reminding all of those in attendance just how valuable he was and can still be in the return game. Meanwhile, during some rushing drills, he threw a few impressive blocks to free the backs, including one against veteran cornerback Corey Webster.
Meanwhile, for Barden, it was more of the same. And by that, we mean he flashed on the practice field and displayed a unique blend of talents everyone has hoped he'd eventually show during a game that counts.
The fourth-year wide receiver out of Cal Poly reached behind him and hauled in a pass while being completely blanketed by rookie cornerback Jayron Hosley, and later caught what would have resulted in a touchdown as he streaked down the sideline passed a linebacker.
He appeared smooth, focused and determined. It's something he'll have to continue throughout camp and the preseason if he's to earn playing time once the regular season kicks off.
Day two practice begins at 1:30 PM EST and Giants 101 will be there to bring you complete coverage.

No camp for you today?
Terrific camp reports from Paul and Krow. Keep ‘em coming, whoever attends.
The big surprise is there are no real surprises (yet.) The depth chart seems as many of us have surmised. This coaching staff does believe that youngsters need to “play their way” onto the 2nd and 1st teams. I’m not surprised with the Prince re-boot. I don’t think he’ll be running with the 3’s for long.
I’d be very interested to read any observations of the second and third tier safeties. Also tight-ends, how they are using Scott and Martinek, the composition of the 2nd string OL, and the Tracy vs. Trattou situation.
