In today's NFL, nicknames are often given rather than earned. For some veterans, like New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora, they feel that having a cognomen bestowed upon someone is an honor that must come through hard work and on-field success. It's for that reason that Umenyiora has heard enough about Washington Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III and the RG3 moniker.
“Who is this RG3 guy you guys keep talking about? You talking about Bob Griffin? You guys are giving him a cool nickname already and everything," Umenyiora said during a WFAN interview on Tuesday. “When he does anything in the NFL we’re gonna call him RG3. Right now he’s Bob Griffin.”
Osi giveth and Osi taketh away. Henceforth, RG3 will be known as "Bob", while Philadelphia Eagles running back LeSean McCoy remains "Lady Gaga."
It wasn't just Bob that Umenyiora had in the crosshairs, however. He also briefly targeted New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan … noting that Big Blue taught he and Gang Green a valuable lesson they should not soon forget.
“I didn’t play that game but I was in the meetings and all that stuff, man, they didn’t like [the trash talk] at all. I just knew the Jets were gonna get a beat-down after all that trash talking they were doing," Umenyiora said. “I think Rex has pretty much learned his lesson about that … you really don’t want to be poking a bear with a short stick like that.”
Love the chatter or hate the chatter, there's no denying that Chief Osi may have a career in comedy once he retires from the NFL. He never shies away from saying exactly what's on his mind, no matter how controversial it may be, and that's a unique quality that should be respected.
And hey, it's not as if he's not telling anyone things they don't already know.
