On the heels of Amani Toomer calling Dallas Cowboys' Tony Romo the premiere quarterback in the NFC East, tight end Jason Witten was quick to accept the compliment on behalf of his teammate, but stopped short of agreeing with the retired wide receiver. Although he acknowledged his belief that Romo is an elite athlete, he wouldn't go as far as to say he's more talented or valuable than Eli Manning.
"I think he's an elite league quarterback," Witten said of Romo. "Many people have said that. I think that's great that Amani said that, but at the end of the day, Eli is a Super Bowl champ. He's won two out of the last five years. They're doing a lot of good things right up there. They're the poster boys of how you do it and not let adversity get in the way because of where they're at."
It's an interesting stance for Witten to take, but being complimentary of Big Blue is nothing new for him. Back in early April, he praised both Martellus Bennet and tight end coach Mike Pope, saying he expects big things from his former teammate in 2012.
More to the point, the support for Toomer's argument has been greatly lacking. Even Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said in late January that the biggest difference between the two teams is Eli Manning. Needless to say, the endorsements for Romo, either before or after Toomer's comments, have not been ringing.
In seven years in the NFL, Romo has one playoff win, while Manning has earned himself two Super Bowl MVP awards. If you want to win football games, you take Easy-E. If you want to win your fantasy league, you take Romo.

There’s a lot of confusion that’s been injected into any discussion of players because of fantasy football. The correlation can break down … Especially at QB. Yeah, Tony is definitely the FF play. So what.
Actually hes not. Romo hasnt been a better FF option in quite some time…
Oh man, this again? It is patently absurd to suggest that Tony Romo is Eli’s equal. I don’t agree with those who want to claim that at this moment Rodgers is better, but at least they have a leg on which to stand. But Tony? C’mon.
And I don’t want to hear about Tom Brady either. No doubt he is a great quarterback and a first-ballot Hall of Fame entrant, but you cannot argue he is Eli’s equal at this point because in the two big games they played against each other Eli was a fundamental reason the Giants won and he outplayed Brady each time. The rest is noise.
Same goes for Roethlisberger. He is really good, but Eli outplayed him twice in recent years when they were matched up.
I laugh at the clowns who will claim that Montana was the best quarterback ever while dismissing Marino because he wasn’t as good a “big game” guy as was Joe, and then turn around and rank others ahead of Eli because they have “better numbers” and he’s “inconsistent”. People see what they want to see. I’ve watched a lot of quarterbacks come and go and for my money only Johnny Unitas and Joe Montana were quarterbacks I would trust to win me a critical game in the last five minutes to the extent I trust Eli Manning. You cannot put “numbers” on that, but we are watching the evolution of a truly great quarterback and those who don’t see it are either thick-headed or rationalizing their foregone conclusions rather than objectively observing Eli’s career.
The comparison of Romo to Eli is silly, and the fact that Amani Toomer made it and then declared Romo “better” (although if you parse his words he didn’t actually say that in those words) is a reflection on him, not on Eli Manning. In a few years it may be fair to claim that the best quarterback is Aaron Rodgers, or Peyton Manning, or even one of the young bucks, but right now it’s Eli. Doesn’t matter. Just get some more rings Eli and let the rest take care of itself.
Hahahaha. Man the Giants get no respect! Man it really gets my panties in a bunch. Oh wait, I don’t wear panties like the rest of you.
First of all this whole month long dialogue about the Giants not getting respect is absurd. Just browsing the football preview mags, both have the Giants number 1 and 3, (Anthlon, and USA Today). And espn has the Giants first in their power rankings. So it seems that you guys just pick and choose what “experts” are saying, because a lot of them have the Giants ranked as one of the top teams, Eli as a top QB, and TC as a top coach.
Also for those of you that have never worked in T.V., you do realize that the primary purpose of a show is to get ratings, which is exactly what NFL shows do. And when you put out an hour long show 5 days a week you need to find things to talk about, and fill that hour with. That’s the on air talents job. Not to be right. Do you really think they’d be working in broadcasting if they we’re right all the time? No they’d be living in a vegas penthouse counting their winnings every sunday night.
As for 55′s post about Brady and Eli. Just a classic. Usually 55 tries to bring logic into most of his posts, but occasionally he likes to go on insensible rants that more resemble the talking heads on television he despises. (Although he makes a good point on Marino)
Brady was outplayed by Eli really? Umm didn’t he set a record for the most consecutive completions in the SB. Didn’t Welker drop a ball that would have made him a 4 time champ. Didn’t he get beaten to a pulp in SB 42 only to drive the length of the field for the go ahead score with under 3 min left in the 4th Q? And how many times has his team been to the playoffs the last decade? With a cr@p running game. And mostly terrible WR’s. You wanna bash Romo that’s fine but don’t start acting like Brady isn’t anyones equal. That dude is a monster. And has done just as much for his team than Eli has for the Giants, probably even more.
As for talking heads. Bradshaw= funny guy that’s usually hoped up on prescription meds. If you take anything he says seriously than you’re an idiot. Jimmy Johnson = retired football coach who likes to earn a fat paycheck while not on his fishing yacht. In fact almost all talking heads are guys trying to earn a paycheck, not be right. Because as stated above, if anyone was right all the time they certainly wouldn’t be working in broadcasting, or on the G101 message boards.
Anyway can we please stop this Giants/ Eli get no respect thing. It’s unsettling and at times downright nauseating to read this stuff. But then again, Dan Benton is trying to get readers/ earn a paycheck. Gotta fill up the space somehow in July. So I get it. I just don’t care much for it.
P.S. Don’t hate on Jaworski. His NFL Matchup show is one of the last good football shows out there. Dude watches more film than any broadcaster in the business. He knows his stuff.
P.P.S. The big improvement I’m looking to see from Eli and TC this season is to 1. not lose the 2-3 winnable games they blow every year. (2011 examples, Seahawks, Vince Young Philly, and 2nd Skins game). And also not jerk around until the fourth Q in other games (Miami, Arizona). I’m hoping for a 2008 like beat down of inferior teams. The Dallas finale and Atlanta playoff game give me hope.
