After a one-year hiatus due to the NFL Lockout, the New York Giants have officially announced that they will return to the University at Albany for training camp in 2012. The team will report to the state capital on July 26th and remain until camp ends on August 14th.

“I think some people got worried when they won the Super Bowl that Tom Coughlin would say, ‘Well we won it, why do we need to go back?’ " Kevin Galuski, the assistant athletic director at the University at Albany said in March. “I never thought that."

Although some things are scheduled to change at UAlbany in 2012, namely the use of Field 1 which will likely be a construction site, the Giants should have no problems finding all the space they need.

“They’ll have everything they need," Galuski said.

A week after Big Blue defeated the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI, President and CEO John Mara made a promise that the team would return to Albany, where they had previously held camp since 1996.

"The University at Albany and the Capital Region has been a great summer home for us for 15 years, and we have every intention of returning there in 2012," Mara said in February.

Giants 101 will be there. Will you?

Maybe it’s just me, but I didn’t really like what I saw from Prince Knockahoma last year. The Cornhusker looked a little corn-fused. And that’s not a good thing for a CB … especially one that was touted as arguably ‘the best in the draft’.

Now I’m not writing him off. His situation was a far from ideal. Short camp … a bit of a contract struggle … then an immediate injury. And he did play better down the stretch. So …. a lot of mitigating factors. Sill … he didn’t exactly explode on the scene. Just sayin’ …

Whilst you could very well end up sniffing this one out correctly, keep in mind Corey Webster was sitting on the bench at one point during the 2007 championship season. Now he’s one of the best in the game.

      • Krow says:

Yeah. I’m not going full-on negative. I just expected a little more ‘wow factor’. Hopefully we’ll see it this season.

Can’t wait for camp. It’s always nice when you’ve just won a title – sit back and have a relaxing day of watching guys fight for jobs at the U.

As June is upon us and there is very little to talk about, think about football-wise, I thought I’d toss out my ultimate fantasy/goal starting right now.

Inasmuch as we are the reigning Super Bowl Champs having just dispatched the Patriots in Supe XLVI, and Supe XLVIII will be hosted in our house, what I’m fantasizing about is a title defense this year in Supe XLVII, and then a 3-peat at HOME in Supe XLVIII. That would give just about every meaningful record conceivable to the Giants organization in general and Eli Manning in particular.
(The only 3-peat opportunity I remember appearing likely was the ’90 9′rs, and we know who scuttled that plan.)

So as the lazy, hazy days of summer roll out before us, I say let’s focus on that repeat, so as to afford the option of the 3-peat, at our home stadium where Eli will ultimately unseat Tom Brady and every other QB, past, present and future, as the Greatest QB of All Time!

    • fanfor55years says:

Now THAT is a fantasy worth having!

I’ll settle for two more Lombardis over the course of Eli’s career regardless of when they happen, which would make him among the greatest ever and make the Giants the clearly best franchise since the advent of the salary cap. But that isn’t fantasy. I think there’s a decent chance it happens. But your scenario sounds even better.

  4. fanfor55years says:

Ahem, let me say (and here come the brickbats about tooting my own horn) that I was alone here, and almost among ALL Giants fans and experts outside the Giants’ locker room, in saying in 2007 that Corey Webster was going to be a very good cornerback and that I expected him to play well in the playoffs if given the chance. I didn’t think it was really a tough call given his physical attributes and his great resume in the SEC against NFL-quality receivers.

I was also very quick to say I loved the Terrell Thomas pick because he would be a corner who could both cover and really excel in run support, as he had in college. That, too, was against some pretty good receivers in the west.

So I’m here to tell you that Prince Amukamara is going to be a stud. Forget last season. No camp, the scheme changes around him, even the veterans are totally confused by their assignments until late in the year, and the guy has to deal with a bad wheel. I watched him very carefully down the stretch. He has all the physical tools (great closing speed, good backpedal, long reach, willingness to mix it up when the ball is in the air, good identification of the ball, etc.). He was hindered early by not having a clue what he was doing, but once he started to “get” it he was doing a very good job covering his man and his zones. He should make a huge jump this season and by next year I expect him to be one of the top two corners on the depth chart. I think he’ll be around for many years provided he stays healthy.

FWIW, I also have a good feeling about Holsey just based on seeing some of his highlights, but until we see someone in camp you just never know. Jackson, too, can play, but he may need a brain transplant. And I expect good things from Tryon, who really impressed me last season right before he was injured. I still cannot fathom why the Colts let him walk. Giunta should be awfully happy with the group he has to work with this season. Even Bing has a shot, and let’s not forget that Johnson was thought of as one of the “emerging” corners on this team when he went down. Losing Witherspoon was lousy, but there’s an awful lot of talent still around.

    • Krow says:

OK … that’s an official prediction … LOL … which I sincerely hope comes true.

      • fanfor55years says:

Yep, I’ve made a number of them and been way more right than wrong, but there was that damned Wilkinson who seems to have existed to keep me humble. I’m very confident about The Prince. Let’s all hope my confidence is well-placed.

  5. Dirt says:

Can’t believe they won a Super Bowl with a back 7 featuring Torbor, Mitchell, Wilson, Johnson and Butler.

    • fanfor55years says:

Yeah, but they had that fierce monster Pierce who was so good he could overcome that deficiency.

Actually, what they had was a decent Mitchell who played very well that season, a barely-decent Pierce, a mediocre Torbor, Wilson playing the best ball he ever played, Corey Webster playing brilliantly in the playoffs after having been benched, and a pass rush so ferocious in the playoffs that it covered for a lot of sins in that back seven. Robbins, Strahan, Osi, Tuck, Cofield, and Kiwi were quite a front. They didn’t need all that much behind them, which is a very good thing because some of those players were real bums.

  6. norm says:

When the Prince broke his foot immediately following his return from his holdout, I recall thinking “That’s that; we’re not going to get anything out of him this season.” I may have even posted something here to that effect.

Frankly, he wound up outplaying my expectations. I’m sure most everyone here still remembers that “Uh-oh” moment in the GB playoff game when the Prince came on to the field. The way Rodgers looked toward him was reminiscent of how the Eye of Sauron would lock on Frodo whenever he put on the ring. When Rodgers eventually turned his attention elsewhere and the expected serving of Prince Toast never came, I was pleasantly surprised – to say the least.

Assuming his foot is at or near 100%, the Prince will be fine.

  7. rlhjr says:

Prince is in keeping with the majority of Reeses first round picks. That is to say he’s a freak. He’s not had his “hello world” moment yet. However, I suspect at some point during camp, coaches will start the collective “Joker” grin when the view his film.

I am hoping that Austin and Jerigan show progress as well. They trouble me way more than Prince Ama yo mama.

  8. Rosedale Is Back says:

First off want to say happy I’m back to chat up some G-men football. From what I saw from The Prince I was impressed INT first game playing never saw him get beat big no one steps into the game and is all pro. Just remember week one 2007 I saw Randy Moss Destroy Revis and every other corner on the Jets. So the position takes time to develop. And as for them returning to Albany I’m actually ecstatic there this spot next to the Gulf Gas station that makes the best wings in the Tri-state area. So the inner fatboy in me is jumping up and down like Kujo when he sees a McDonald’s lol…. Hey man it’s been months

    • rlhjr says:

And here I was thinking Kujosarus was a “HEALTH FOOD NUT”…….LMAO

      Welcome back “Rosedale”

  9. Rosedale Is Back says:

He would have been the #1 or 2 CB off the board if he came out in this draft and to tell the truth we don’t need him to be Revis. If he’s better than Ross I’ll be happy with our pass rush he just have to improve his ball skills and he will look like an Elite Corner.

  10. Rosedale Is Back says:

Yes I lost my old handle and didn’t have time to create a new but to tell the truth no one has said anything off the wall that caused me to want to rant. Well in a season you win a Super Bowl your Qb is now getting top 5 respect Then you recall how your sneaky team kept Cruz you can do nothing but smile ear to ear. Even this Hakeem “The Dream” Nicks news doesn’t have me down…. Even played hooky from work so I could chat it up with you fanatics only people I know that would come to blows if a Cowgirls fan tried to say Romo is better than Eli….
