A source with knowledge of the situation says that at 4:00 PM Eastern Time this afternoon, former first-round selection, cornerback Aaron Ross, will hit the open market as a free agent and the New York Giants do not have interest in bringing him back.
Ross was General Manager Jerry Reese's first ever selection and represents a rookie class that helped propel the Giants to a win over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. He was also a starter on the Super Bowl XLVI squad.
At around 9:00 AM eastern time, the Giants re-signed 2008 second-round draft choice Terrell Thomas, giving them adequate depth at the cornerback position. This represented the final nail in the coffin for Ross.
The current situation at cornerback for the Giants includes Corey Webster, Prince Amukamara, Terrell Thomas, Justin Tryon and Brian Witherspoon.
David Baas restructures contract.
Center David Baas has restructured his contract, dropping his 2012 salary from $3M to $900K, saving the Giants $1.575 million in cap room this year. Like Eli Manning, the remaining $2.1M will likely be converted to a bonus.

Kyle,
Are Tryon and Witherspoon restricted or signed?
yea, I havent read anything about them being signed but Id love for Tryon to get a decent deal.
I’m very eager to hear the details of TT’s contract.
At the risk of sounding like a jerk, I hope it was very cheap and uber-team friendly.
+1
I couldnt agree more.
I really hope we didn’t pay too much to keep him here.
It’s not sounding like a jerk, it’s being smart. I hope he got a kiwi type prove yourself kinda deal
You don’t sound like a jerk at all. I love Thomas and have enjoyed the pride that he has taken in being a physical corner who can tackle. I also love that this shores up the position a great deal. However, spending a lot on a guy who has injured the same knee twice, would dampen my enthusiasm dramatically.
Remember that Bruce Johnson is signed too.
When did Bruce Johnson sign?
Last week
He signed last week, along with Jake Ballard.
Yesterday it was reported Reese was offering a multi-year prove it type deal. I’m guessing it will be similar to Kiwi’s 2yr 4-5mio with 2 guaranteed
I hope that is indeed the case. That would be very palatable.
Aaron Ross … Thanks for contributing to two Superbowls. Good luck in your career.
Yep, I’m glad we had him in 2011 when TT went down.
Ok so I’m a first time poster but have been reading this site since it was on that other site. I loved reading everyone’s opinions and thoughts on this team; I wanted to chime in on free agency, I think the giants should look keep the trenches strong as that’s where the battle is won or lost, so if we can get a Ben Grubbs I would be ecstatic even if that’s the only major free agency move made. Bennett is the TE that the giants need to go after, he is an excellent blocker and has the size and athleticism to be an above average to good pass catcher. Kujo- i know u like Carlson and i wouldnt be upset if the giants is able to sign him but i put him behind Bennett. FF55- i dont think we should use our cap soace on mario manningham as much as i love him, because you can give Eli lesser talented WRs with an excellent OL and he will be able to make that WR look all pro, basically what im saying is i rather protect Eli with a great OL and trust he will make the WRs look great than keeping Manningham. As for rbs we should look to draft one and not waste precious caps space there. Dan- is tyron resigned?
JBeast – Thanks for commenting. Great thoughts. Keep ‘em coming.
Agreed on OLine in free agency, but I’d rather see a RT signed than a guard, the way we got McKenzie way back. The big names there are Levi Brown and Eric Winston (though Winston is more of a zone blocking guy).
Winston is WAY better than Brown and he’ll ask for $6M+ per year.
thanks, i went G cause i honestly believe that DD can fill in at RT and i was thinking it might be cheaper to get Grubbs than Winston
Good thoughts.
Wow nice moves by Reese!
Keep them coming.
Is there even a downside for these players restructuring their salary into bonuses?
For the players there is not (outside of any potential tax implications).
For the team, you are pushing your future cap numbers up irrevocably. So this year’s cap number goes down, but future years go up. You still have to pass that money through your books at some point.
This is especially dangerous if the players in question get hurt or their abilities otherwise decline at a unexpectedly rapid pace. You’re now taking big cap hits for players that aren’t contributing in those years (commonly referred to as “dead money”).;
You do have to count it at some point, but assuming the cap goes up down the road and the player plays out his contract, it doesn’t burn you. The two scenarios that kill is if the cap doesn’t go up as much as expected or you have to cut the player with a lot of years left on the contract at which point you have to count the guaranteed money against your cap.
Pushes money to future years. Could be creating headaches down the road.
Also, you never know, the NFL might think you are screwing with the competitive balance and take away cap space from your team.
Not if they play out their contracts. Bonuses typically only bite you in the rear if you cut a guy early into his contract. Converting the salary to a bonus allows you to spread out the money over the length of the contract. For example if youa player is due three million this year and you restructure to pay 1 million and convert 2 million into bonus, you can now spread that two million over the remaining years of the contract. However, once you convert the salary to a bonus it is now guaranteed money. If you cut a guy prior to the end of his contract he gets all of the remaining guaranteed money left on his contract and that counts against you in a big way. Using the example I just gave, that two million that had been spread out is now counted against the cap in one shot. That’s me giving a truncated explanation based upon my understanding, but I believe my general explanation is correct.
thanks for all of the explanations!
They are pretty close to being done with cornner concerns. I figure they keep five.
So there will be knock down drag out for the final slot in camp.
So what’s next? TE, OL, RB, DL/OLB and FS?
My money is on TE, followed by RB (draft). Then DL/OLB (draft) OL (FA) FS (draft)
The team has two box safeties.
Also great move by baas to restructure next should be Deihl and Canty and Bradshaw. Any of the draft guru know of a good pass catching blitz pick upper out of the RB spot?
It would be stupid to keep restructuring as more cap room will be pushed to later years. you should only restructure if you have to
Canty yes, Diehl probably not. Don’t want to push guaranteed money on him forward. I’m not sure the team is sold on him being on the roster in 2012 and 2013.
My hunch is that the Giants are at or near the limit of what they are willing to commit, cap-wise, to the cornerback position. At this point, I very much doubt Reese makes a serious bid to retain Tryon… unless he’s willing to play for peanuts.
FWIW, here are some comments made by TT shortly after The Prince was drafted:
“It actually helps me out, because now hopefully I can move back into the slot and I’ll be able to be utilized a little bit different back to my rookie and sophomore year,” said Thomas, who led the Giants with 101 tackles and five interceptions last year. “I love playing in the slot.”
“I don’t mind playing outside but in the slot you are around the ball a lot more and Perry’s defense is really based on instincts and using your eyes and that is one of my strengths. To be able to get in the slot and use that and be a bigger body in there will definitely benefit me a lot more.”
http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/giants/post/_/id/4869/terrell-thomas-prince-a-fresh-addition
This sounds great, but I feel like the slot is where his knee injuries will hurt him the most. Any loss of quickness or explosiveness out of his breaks will be amplified in the slot.
Hopefully, this signing (and the letting go of Tryon if that turns out to follow) means the Giants are VERY confident that TT can be near 100%. I’m still very nervous about our ability to field a slot corner until I see it proven otherwise on the field.
It would be a real shame if we wind up asking Rolle to do it again come October or November.
I actually like the thought of him in the slot a great deal. If his knee is healed fully of course. Thomas does have good instincts and reacts well. His weakness is lack of top end speed that made him vulnerable to getting burnt deep if someone got behind him. When allowed to come up and jam the receiver he could minimize this risk to a degree with his physicality, but if he missed, a guy like Dez Bryant could take to it to the house in a flash.
