New York Giants’ David Diehl Has Six Surgical Screws Inserted into Broken Finger

Six. That's the number of screws it took to fix the broken finger of New York Giants offensive lineman David Diehl.

"Well it's good to know that my hand and finger are now fixed. Does anyone need screws?" Diehl tweeted following his surgery.

Diehl accompanied his tweet with an X-Ray image of his surgically repaired hand, which clearly showcases the work done to repair his mangled paw. And if you happen to have an incredibly weak stomach, the photo, seen here, probably isn't for you.

The offensive lineman revealed post-Super Bowl XLVI that he had played with a broken hand/finger for more than two months of the season, which would explain why he eventually had to have six screws inserted to fix what would normally only take a splint.

He started all 20 games for the Giants this season; the first 10 at left guard and the final 10 at left tackle after Will Beatty was placed on Injured Reserve (IR) with a detached retina. He's also started all 140 games he's played since being drafted by Big Blue in the fifth round of the 2003 NFL Draft.

Team Needs: LB, RB, OL. It’s hard to nitpick the champs, but there are reasons why the Giants were 7-7 before they started their epic run. Eli and the passing game are outstanding, but the running game ranked last during the regular season (Brandon Jacobs, with his $4.9 million due next year, will likely be released). The Giants also could add some young muscle to the O-line. They’ll need to replace Super Bowl hero WR Mario Manningham if he leaves in free agency. The defense ranked 27th in regular season but came on late. Help will be sought at linebacker and in the secondary, but the corner position will improve as 2011 top pick Prince Amukamara takes on a bigger role (a foot injury limited him earlier in the year) and Terrell Thomas returns from his preseason ACL injury.

How can they say that the CB position will improve when Amukamara is an unproven newbie and Thomas will be back from his second ACL (if he comes back) ?

OL seems a need, althought I don’t see much reinforcement (outside of the proverbial late round project) coming in this offseason.
I’ll think they’ll give them a chance to show what they can do with a full offseason, and hopefully Baas will be healthy.

Re: the previous article on Manningham?

Call me skeptical, but I’m thinking even if Mario went back to Michigan for his Senior year, he wasn’t walking away with a degree. Just sayin’

  7. The Original G Man says:

DISCLAIMER: Tossing this out merely as a hypothetical for discussion purposes …

The 1st pick of the 2nd round is generally considered to be extremely valuable as teams will have 8 hours or so to re-evaluate their individual draft boards following the conclusion of the 1st round and often try to move up to #33 to get a particular player who they feel has “fallen”. Given that, would it make sense for the Giants (or anyone picking 32nd) to intentionally allow time to expire on their selection, thus allowing another team to “race to the podium” to get their pick in? Day 1 of the draft would then end with that pick and, in theory, the Giants would now have the 1st pick of day 2 and thus in a position to wheel and deal.

Again, not advocating this, etc … and I’m sure Roger Goodell would have an aneurysm about it, but I just thought the concept was interesting.

“Super Bowl Hangover Pt. 3: Eli’s Elite Pace”

To conclude our little Super Bowl Hangover of data, it’s one final look at Eli Manning and his excellent 2011 season. As if there wasn’t enough material for Captain Comeback this week, there are some more milestones to pass on.

Thanks to a NFL record-tying 7th fourth quarter comeback and 8th game-winning drive of the season, Eli Manning now sits in good company with the all-time leaders through their first eight seasons in each category:

Cold Hard Football Facts always does a great job with their analysis, very thorough and objective in their conclusions.

One thing that stood out to me was how Phillip Rivers is not included on any of the performance lists and how Big Ben is right up there with Eli. Very telling.

Big Diehl has to be one of the best 5th round value picks in Giants history.

Guy has started at every spot on the line except center, missed only 4 games entirely (all last year), including several years at LT for less than market value with a smile on his face.

He’ll take a pay cut if we ask him too…and he won’t complain about it.

    • HopLax08 says:

Agreed. Incredibly durable, tough, gritty, versatile team-first player. Exactly the type of player Coughlin and the Giants front office love. IMHO grossly undervalued by most on G101.
