The New York Giants are Super Bowl champions and that comes with a price to pay, primarily along their coaching staff which is poised to be raided.
That raid began today with news that quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan was in Florida interviewing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Offensive Coordinator job.
Sullivan has been with the Giants since 2004, where he began as the wide receivers coach. Following the 2009 season, Sullivan became the quarterbacks coach when Chris Palmer, who held that position since 2007, left the team to become head coach and General Manager of the UFL's Hartford Colonials. After only one season Palmer returned to the NFL and is now the offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans.
In addition to Sullivan, several other Giants assistants are getting a look.
Jack Bicknell Jr., the Giants' assistant offensive line coach, is interviewing with the Kansas City Chiefs for their vacant offensive line coaching position, while Al Holcomb, a defensive assistant, is interviewing with West Virginia and appears poised to become their new defensive line coach.
This is likely only the first wave of interest in Giants coaches and assistants, and no one should be surprised when the names Kevin Gilbride and Perry Fewell begin to get thrown out there.
UPDATE: The Buccaneers have officially hired Mike Sullivan.

By whom? There are no head coaching vacancies left.
Another classy move by the Giants by letting their coaches interview for new jobs. They could easily deny permission to other clubs (unless for a HC job), but they give their guys a chance to build their careers. Lots of other clubs have recently denied similar requests. Kudos.

When the Maras say that being part of the Giants family means something it isn’t just hot air. They root for their people (players and coaches) to have good lives. I was always amused when a few years ago there was a lot of talk that players would rather play for the Jets than the Giants. What should have been added as a codicil was that the statement only applied to stupid players.
There are four great organizations in the NFL. The Giants, Pats, Packers and Steelers are the gold standard. Everyone else is just trying to catch up. And we should all be grateful that the team we root for is at the summit of organizations in the league. None of us knew that when we became fans. We just cared about the Giants as a team without any knowledge or interest in the organization behind it. Lucky us.
+100. As FF55 said, we are a classy organization. It really strikes me the wrong way when a team refuses to allow one of their assistants interview for a better job elsewhere. Granting permission to our assistants is just one of the many things that makes this organization the cream of the crop.
There will be plenty of head coaching spots in college football that those two will be considered for. Gilbride gets interest almost every year.
So the season is over fellas. Can you believe our NY Giants won the superbowl????????
That is really something.
Hmmm. Where is demo? There were a very small number of us who thought there was a chance this season could turn out well, even at 7-7. He was one (in fact, the loudest among us). Did he disappear or is he just lying in wait for some of the naysayers to claim they always believed so he can direct his wrath at them?
Demo might feel like his job is done lol.
I almost feel like the team read my post after the redskin game. I’m usually with Demo. But while I thought we still had a good chance at the playoffs, I thought we were too inconsistent to beat that many good teams in a row. It feels good to be so wrong.
That’s okay. I’m still around, leading the long-term believers in this organization and this particular team as long as Mr. Manning is under center and Mr. Reese is doing the drafting. And now I have to add as long as Mr. Coughlin is the coach. I doubted Tom many times. Never, ever, again.
btw, it will be a major upset if Sullivan doesn’t get that job. A number of folks turned the Bucs down for a variety of jobs, but Schiano knows Sullivan and knows what he’s done for the Giants. I think it’s a bit of a stretch for Sullivan, as it would be for any position coach, but he’s been around the block, knows the receiver position and the quarterback position, and has learned under Coughlin and Gilbride.
He should be hired, and good luck to him. Good guy. Sorry to see him go.
The fortunate thing is that now every coach in the country probably wants “in” with the Giants. They are champs, their organization is tops, their Head Coach is a good mentor, and getting a foot in the door allows a few younger coaches to move up after a stint here, whether toward the top of the Giants food chain or someone else’s. Coughlin will probably bring in good people as replacements no matter who leaves. He really should have his pick of the litter.
Who thinks Gilbride Jr. gets promoted from Offensive Quality Control to QB Coach?
The SB run might have inflated the value of a few of our players but it certainly helped us keep our coaches. If we lose to GB I think our staff would have been raided. I think Gillbride and Fewell don’t have the options available at this time that will make them really want to leave. They could find a college job but those HC jobs are even all gone unless something happens. We lucked this year with our coaches.
Speaking of the draft, who is a better QB for the long run? Luck or RGIII
I like RG3 a lot as a talent and even more as a young man. However, until I see his style of play work long term I have to go with Luck. Cam was very succesful his first year but he’s much bigger than RG3 and who says Cam will last long term. Although RG3 he can run almost like Vick, he will have to use his abilities like Rodgers to maximize his game. Luck is overhyped, I get it. But that doesn’t mean he’s not really good. I think he has a much higher floor than RG3 and a similar ceiling.
Both will be busts.
I disagree I think luck will be good and I like a pocket passer better
Honestly I’m just trying to stir up trouble. I’m happy that I don’t have to be a GM faced with the decision to draft either one of them. Careers are judged by one pick. The right one makes you a genius and the wrong one makes you an idiot despite whatever else you do. Can you imagine drafting Luck and having him be a bust while RG3 goes on to greatness? You become the answer to a trivia question. It’s like drafting Sam Bowie ahead of Jordan.
No effing football sunday… I’m goin through withdrawal.
I was going to ask about demo. It’s fine to take time off from posting … but I’d like to be certain he’s OK. It’s not like him to just vanish.

Kujo, Demo ok???
I claimed last night that Eli Manning just had the greatest season a QB has ever had in the Super Bowl era, given it ended with a Super Bowl MVP, and he got there with the worst rush offense in football and a bad defense that gave up more points than Eli scored. And his weapons consisted of 3 receivers, no one out of the backfield, and slow, average TEs. Am I nuts?
Nope you’re not nuts. With people like Skip Bayless proclaiming the greatness of Brady for carrying a suddenly talentless sad sack team to the cusp of a championship(sarcasm) I think your assessment is only fair. After all, while the NE defense finished 31st in yards allowed (useless measure) they finished 15th in points allowed (a better measure). The Giants gave up fewer yards (finishing a whopping 27th) but gave up more points (25th). The Patriots didn’t beat a team that finished with a winning record until the AFC Championship game. But Brady lovers point to 13-3 and use it as a criticism of Eli for being only 7-7 at one point. Forget the murderers row of games the Giants had to play. Forget that they had a much more difficult path in the playoffs. Stats without context are like special effects without a story. It can look good and kinda cool but really doesn’t mean much.
The throws Eli was making in the playoffs and the super bowl were amazing. It was as good of a run as I’ve seen any QB have in my lifetime. Obviously I don’t watch other QB’s as intently as I do a Giant QB. What is most amazing is not the throws, but the times that he made them. The more critical the situation, the better Eli is. When the Giants got the ball on their last drive there was no doubt in my mind we would take the lead, the only questions were TD or FG and how much time would be left. I keep hearing about the Manningham catch, and while it was an amazing play I really think that I would have been more surprised if Eli DID NOT make an amazing throw to lead the team down the field. Like Amani Toomer said tonight on NFL radio, there are a number of receivers that could have made that catch, but far fewer QB’s that could have made that throw.
