New York Giants’ Travis Beckum & Jake Ballard Suffer Knee Injuries, Dave Tollefson a Broken Hand

The Super Bowl XLVI championship did not come without casualties for the New York Giants. Tight end Travis Beckum suffered a torn ACL in the second quarter on Sunday, and then defensive end Dave Tollefson suffered a broken hand and dislocated pinky. If that weren't enough, tight end Jake Ballard also suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee.

After being helped off of the field, Ballard had his knee wrapped and attempted to cut on the sideline, but immediately crumbled to the ground. Both he and Beckum, obviously, did not return to the game.

Tollefson, on the other hand (no pun intended), had his wounds taped up and immediately got back out on the field to finish the game. Afterwards, he refused to mention his hand, but did call the Giants "dynasty killers."

"We stuck with each other, we love each other, and it goes to prove the American dream is still alive, man," Tollefson said. "If you work hard, you can get whatever you want. I promise."

For Beckum, who is still under contract through 2012, it's unlikely he'll be ready to start the regular season. For Ballard and Tollefson, who are both free agents, their respective injuries should be healed and rehabbed by then should the Giants choose to re-sign them.

They better resign Tollefson…or Wosi as his teammates call him.

    You’re all class Gisele.

“You (have) to catch the ball when you’re supposed to catch the ball,” she snapped back. “My husband cannot (bleeping) throw the ball and catch the ball at the same time. I can’t believe they dropped the ball so many times.”

As I’ve grown in years and as a person (although some might debate this) I’ve learned how superficial beauty can be overshadowed by being a foul-mouthed half-wit. What an ugly person.

I’ll post more later this week, but I can tell you that the experience of being at the game was absolutely incredible. The most electric atmosphere for a game I’ve ever witnessed. Both sets of fans (almost all of the people from Indy were Giants’ fans for the day since they hate the Pats and love the Mannings) were loud and had plenty to cheer about.

I’ll just say a few quick things.

We watched Steve Weatherford warming up for about 45 minutes and punting kick after kick 45-55 yards to almost the exact spot he wanted and my son and I said to each other he was going to have a big role in the game. He did. He was one of the most valuable players in this game and in this season. What a huge pickup (and what a complete embarrassment for the Jets and their supposed “genius” special teams coach).

If you had been at Lucas Oil (which is a fabulous stadium with great sight-lines) you would have seen that Eli’s passes, with the exception of two throw-aways and two poor throws that were based on uncertainty about coverage and legit fear of a turnover) were beyond belief. Bullets, delivered to such tight spots it was crazy. I was shocked by how well the Pats’ pass defense played. With that two-deep set they used they created unbelievably small windows for Eli and the guy just kept hitting those windows all game with lasers. I’ve seen a lot of great quarterback play in my life. I’m here to tell you that Eli Manning is, right now, playing at a level that I’ve almost never seen. Not just better than anyone in the current NFL (and don’t tell me he isn’t better than Brady, Brees, Rodgers and anyone else you can name…for the 2011 season that issue is closed because they couldn’t win the biggest games of their years and Eli DID), but better than what I saw from Montana, Staubach, Bradshaw, Elway, Marino, etc. The ONLY guys I’ve seen play at the level Eli has been on of late are Otto Graham and Johnny Unitas at their best. And in those days the windows were larger because defenses were not as sophisticated. Eli is throwing into spaces that Unitas and Graham never had to thread passes into. The guy is, simply, great. Any arguments are passe.

How great is it that after a season of struggle Justin Tuck gets two huge sacks?

Did everyone recognize that Osi put a lot of pressure on Brady on the throw that Blackburn intercepted? He and JPP were very disruptive all game even though they didn’t get sacks.

The O-line adjustments at halftime won the game. They were being beaten in the first half. They won the second half.

I will repeat what I’ve said many times previously: Osi Umeniyora and Mario Manningham are “impact” players and a great GM does whatever he needs to do to attempt to retain them. Jerry Reese is a great GM. He absolutely MUST try to retain those two even at the cost of losing some other free agents. And while retaining Weatherford will be easier because he wants to be a Giant-for- life, he, too, is an impact player who has to be brought back.

I’ll end by saying that Indy did a GREAT job of hosting. Terrific four days. A number of really enjoyable things to do in town. And the folks around here are awfully nice. And I’ll add that having that #32 pick is awfully sweet.

I am not a “kid” by any stretch, but I cannot claim to have lived during the Otto Graham era or the at the time that the telegraph was invented. I’ll have to take your word for it. Sounds like you had a great experience, that must have been an awesome spectacle to witness in person. I thought to myself after the game I probably should have gone. Sometimes practicality needs to take a backseat.

I really felt bad for Beckum last night. I’m not a Beckum fan and I’ve given him plenty of criticism on this board, but making it to the Super Bowl and leaving that way is sad on a human level and I feel for him as a person.

That being said, I cautioned those on this board not to get excited until this guy could string together some games without getting injured. In order to develop as a player you have be on the field. It’s time to move on from Beckum. If we want a guy that presents matchup problems, then we need to go get him. Beckum isn’t the answer and with his injuries he never will be.

The sweet irony of the big catch by MM last night is that it will probably cost us losing him in free agency. If I’m Sam Bradford I would be putting in a call today to coach Fischer suggesting that move where MM would not be a 2 or 3 guy but a #1 receiver. If that comes to pass the kid deserves the money, he has done a great job on this team in not just these playoffs but in filling in for Nicks as a number one while he missed games for injuries. His talent level is for sure a #2 receiver for virtually any team in the league and as we have seen he can step up if needed to be ” the guy” for a game or two..I’m sure the Rams or the 49ers or if they were smart maybe even the Pats will think he may be worth some decent free agency money that we will not be able to match given our need to take care of Nicks n Cruz in the near future.

Maybe the Iggles will want Mario to replace Steve Smith! I’ll scream. Also, no Jets, Cowboys or Skins. Pleeeeeze.

    • Chad EldredChad says:

The good news is that there are a lot of free agent wide receivers this year. High supply puts downward pressure on prices. I really think that he stays.

Any guesses on who the Giants’ opponent will be in the 2012 Thursday Night opener?

My bets (in order): (1) Green Bay (2) Philly (3) Pittsburgh (4) Dallas
