New York Giants rookie linebacker Mark Herzlich hasn't seen the field since late November against the New Orleans Saints, recovering from what had previously been believed to be a severe high ankle sprain.
After missing his sixth consecutive game on Sunday, Herzlich revealed, in response to some rather unruly and disrespectful fans, that's he's been out nursing a broken ankle, not a sprained ankle.
"I am recovering from a broken ankle," Herzlich tweeted to a fan.
The Giants aren't required to disclose specific details of any injury, so Herzlich has been on the injury reported listed with "ankle" and nothing more. Accordingly, there's no way of knowing how bad Herzlich's broken ankle was or how close he is to returning. However, Big Blue has to believe he's got a chance to get back on the field or they would have placed him on Injured Reserve by now.
Herzlich did attempt to do some running last week, and told reporters he was pain free.
"Last week when I tried to do some running, it didn't really work out too well," Herzlich said on Friday. "This week felt really good, pain-free."
Given the improvement seen a week ago, it's not a stretch to think Herzlich will play in the NFC Championship game. And if the injuries sustained against the Packers were all minimal for the Giants, it would actually mark the healthiest they've been all season.

Demo- the ankle isnt as bad as I though it would be.
Lets move to a point that myself, along with a handful of others have been hammering all year:
This defense doesn’t have that many holes. We have two stud safeties. We have a very good corner, a promising rookie, and really good emerging corner coming back next year. We have a very good linebacker in Boley and a potential star in Williams. We have two great defensive ends, and a third great one if hes back next year. We have a good defensive tackle, an emerging one, and a potential stud on the mend who will be back next year. We are really just in need of an impact linebacker and this defense can be very very good, maybe even all time great good IF Prince is what we expect, Thomas comes back healthy, we keep Osi and Austin is what we expect.
We really just need that Patrick Willis type, and not even Willis good. A step lower than Willis would fit this defense perfect and make it something special.
the most amazing thing about the defense yesterday was the play of the secondary. they appeared to man up all night and almost never gave Rogers his first or second reads. but for Rogers ability to run the ball, the Packers might have been shut out.
truly amazing play of late by Deon Grant and Rocky Bernard.
Prince must have done a fine job during the time he spelled Ross as you never heard his name
it looks to me like Tuck is still hurting. it seemed Fewell had Kiwi on the DL quite a bit; Tollefson got his reps; and Tuck was standing a lot on rushing plays
he’s playing with his shoulder wrapped; wondering if he’s hurting in that area
forgot to give a shout out to chase as well. Amazing. Chase, Rocky and Deon making huge contributions.
There is definitely magic in the air.
REPOST. Hope Herzlich gots better.
Rodger Godell gets (DOCUMENTED) 11 million a year to preside over this sham.
He was going to take a dollar salary? Quite frankly he’s not worth that.
And to make matters worse, he is driving the car that would have gladly seen the galant Giants loose last nights game in favor of “GLAMOR” stats and QB’s.
“No way we can have the GIANTS? ……win this game. Not against our casual fan money maker QB. Not against our cash cows (Brady and the dispached Brese and Rodgers) who exemplify our MADDEN’ESQUE pinball score board, lets remove defense from the equation sham of a league.
Watch and listen closely as the TALKING HEADS try to find the words to explain the Giants dominating the Packers. How the Giants held up better in cold weather than the HOME TEAM. How the were LUCKY, how the Packers just didn’t play their game. You will hear it in their voices, and see it in their faces.
The truly stupid among them will never conceed that the Giants simply mauled Green Bay. The rest will struggle for words (Warren Sapp) dumbfounded.
Brady, Brese and Rodgers get stats because you can’t touch them or their receivers. And the amount of fouls commented against blue collar teams like the Giants is ignored. Even though the Giant QB is every bit the player the so called GOLDEN BOY’S are “League supported” in being.
The Giants have tried to play the game the RIGHT WAY. For as many years as I have watched them, the MO has not changed. You run the ball, you keep the mistakes to a minium, and you take shots going deep with the ball when it there. Conversly, you defend by stoping the run, protecting deep, and GOD KNOWS, you put the other QB on the ground. Most of all, you always represent. You play until you can play anymore, and you do it together.
You see it’s a legacy. It was born long ago and has been carried through the years. But it cuts against the WIN NOW, GLITZ and GLAMOR thought process of today. The league wont have teams EARN anything. Because the majority would “EPIC FAIL”. Because everything is GIVEN to them. But not the Giants.
No, they have to EARN it. And I could not be any more happy and proud.
Each and every Giant took part in yeaterdays victory. And every victory over the past month. So dispite my fanfare over JPP, it must be conceded that the Giants, not just JPP EVERY ONE won this game. Not just Eli, but Bradshaw, Nicks, Cruz, Manningham the O-line…EVERYBODY. And count the coaches too.
The so called LUCKY hail Mary was simply a product of the Packers not thinking the Giants were going to TRY to put a stake through their hearts. This time it was the Giants who refused to take their foot off the gas. This time it was the Giants who went for and slit the jugular. And they did it on both sides of the ball. And they did it despite a league dead set against them and the values they (ownership, coaches and majority of PLAYERS) represent.
I said it at the start of the year, I doubted it in the middle of the year and now based on each players dedication the the guy playing next to him, I have to iterate: THEY WILL NEVER EMBARASS A FAN. But I really hope and pray they continue to play long enough TO EMBARASS A LEAGUE AND IT’S BS COMMISSIONER for their obvious lack of values and integrity.
Watching ESPN First Take. Rob Parker still refuses to call Eli elite because his Super Bowl run in 07-08 was “fluky.” Hilarious.
but he’ll be elite if he wins again. How many SB’s have Brees, Rodgers, and Peyton won? By my calculations 1 a piece, but they’re all considered elite. It is total BS. Eli is at the top of his game and playing better then ever.
Yep. Then if Eli does win that second, they’ll still say, “Oh, well there was that lucky pass…he won because of the defense…the other team didn’t show up, blah blah blah.”
I’m starting to think Eli will NEVER get the credit he deserves even if he wins six Super Bowls.
No he won’t. All the analysis would have to admit they were wrong and that will never happen.
Kenny Phillips played himself a hell of a game yesterday, as well
KP is the truth. He was Half a step from picking a pass that Driver made a real nice catch on.
If Reese gets a MIKE who can stay on the field every down, a solid player at right offensive tackle, a “new wave” tight end (ying to Ballards yang) and an all around (pass/run) running back to bring along, this is gong to be something to behold. They just might be able to pull it off.
I think we are in better shape than post 2007 Super Bowl win. Then we were content with the pieces we had, although aging. This time around we know the handful of pieces we need to become more dominant than the 2008 team was before Plaxico shot himself.
ONE MORE GAME AND WE’RE IN THE SUPERBOWL.
Those are very strange words to be writing given the up and down season we had.
Man, it’s a great day to be a Giants fan.
Refs were terrible last night.
They did everything to try and keep GB in that game.
It’s amazing how Eli gets at least 2 blatant late hits on him and not a call. Rogers one hit that was legal and we get flagged.
These refs should be fined for the atrocity that was shown out there.
If FF55 is right about Goff … and he recovers 100% … or if Herzlich pans out … or even Jones … then this defense will be sick.
The offense has a few cracks, but they’ve not held us back.
I can hardly imagine what a decent draft and free agency could turn this team into.
what’s that thing Francesca said last week? he was relating a conversation he had with an unnamed coach last week. and he attributed to the coach, the following: “when you take the field against the Giants, you know you are playing against men.”
the Giants have MAN-handled the Falcons and Packers in succession
Amen………….possesed men at that.
