Because of Hurricane Irene and the multiple schedule changes it caused, the NFL has granted the New York Giants (and likely the New York Jets) five extra roster spots until this Friday. In other words, 30 NFL teams must trim their roster to 80 players by the end of the business day, but the Giants must only trim it to 85.
Accordingly, the team has placed wide receiver Ramses Barden and offensive lineman Adam Koets on the reserve/PUP list, rookie defensive tackle Marvin Austin on the Injured Reserve (IR) and waived/injured wide receiver Duke Calhoun. Cornerback Terrell Thomas had previously been placed on IR.
They’re just not ready to go,” Tom Coughlin said of Barden and Koets.
Each will now miss the first six weeks of the regular season. The irony here is that the Giants felt Steve Smith wouldn’t be ready to go by week one, but he’s been removed from PUP and has returned to practice. Barden, on the other hand, will now miss at least the first six weeks.
The team will have until 4:00 PM EDT on Friday to trim their roster down to 80.
