New York Giants’ Mock Draft Roundup

A few days ago, G101's own Kyle Langan released his mock draft of the top 20 picks. Today, we take a look around the web and see what others are predicting for our beloved Big Blue.

Keep in mind, mock drafts are rarely good for much other than spotting some riser and faller trends and seeing who the world thinks a particular team is aiming for. And sometimes, perhaps oftentimes, they are as misleading as they are helpful. That said, let's take a look:

{Note: the comment following the pick is OUR comment, not the mocker's}

CBSsports.com:

Rob Rang — Illinois DT Corey Liuget. Looks like someone's betting Barry Cofield isn't a Giant next year.

Chad Reuter — Boston OT Anthony Castonzo. Twenty bucks says that name pops up a few more times. Rang had Castonzo going to the San Diego Chargers one pick before us.

ESPN.com:

Mel Kiper — Florida OL Mike Pouncey. Another popular name along the O-line for a Giants team whose line is showing some age. Mel thinks Pouncey will be a guard who can play center if necessary, but we'd rather see a first round pick spent on a guy who can play tackle, for better or worse.

Todd McShay — Mike Pouncey. McShay and Kiper in agreement? Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies, rivers and seas boiling, forty years of darkness! Earthquakes! Volcanoes! Human sacrifice! Dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria!

Nationalfootballpost.com:

We can't quite figure out what's going on over at NFP, with the mock on the front page giving the nod to Corey Liuget the DT and the link to the full mock giving the nod to Mike Pouncey. At least the names are staying consistent, though.

NFL.com:

Pat Kirwan — Mike Pouncey. Another vote for the interior lineman whose roundly expected to be a safe, solid pick without a terribly high ceiling.

Steve Wyche — Alabama RB Mark Ingram. This sure to be a hot topic guy for Giants fans. A few months ago no one would have that the Giants had a shot at the running back who has great college numbers but combine and workout numbers that left a lot to be desired. If Reese likes the tape as much as we hate the 4.6 forty, the Giants might be happy to take him if he reaches 19. On the other hand, as reader Kujo likes to say, do the Giants need another Ron Dayne?

Brian Baldinger — USC OT Tyron Smith. Well, for a guy who wants an offensive tackle (badly), I'd love this pick. However, it seems like most mocks have him going a lot higher.

Bucky Brooks — Anthony Castonzo. Sooooo…back to square one, huh?

SportingNews.com:

Mississippi State OT Derek Sherrod. Who? While SN had Castonzo and Smith off the board early, I was a little surprised to see Sherrod ahead of Colorado OT Nate Solder, who has been conspicuously absent after popping up a few times on our last mock draft roundup.

And let's wrap this up with a mention that Profootballtalk.com went with Castonzo also. So, do the Giants go with the DT presuming Barry leaves town? Are offensive linemen still the priority as most mocks suggest? If Mark Ingram falls to Big Blue, does that make the decision any harder for Reese?

Don’t know much about Sherrod other than that I’ve seen him mocked in the lower 1st/higher 2nd area. Any thoughts from the draftniks?

  2. Billy BillyS says:

Apparently Sherrod is the type who may not have the longest arms or be the strongest guy, but he gets the job done. He’s basically a guy who lots envision as a prototypical left tackle, but he doesn’t have the hype of others. I’d definitely take him over someone like Solder. In fact, with more that’s coming out on him, I’m beginning to like Sherrod more and more. He’s *extremely* smart, quick on his feet, and apparently may very well be the pass protector in the entire draft. Various scouting reports say that his run blocking is good, just not as dominant as his pass protection.

A guy who is apparently very smart, an extremely hard worker, and a great pass blocker…that doesn’t sound bad at all. He’s also got great size around 6’5″, 320 with pretty good quickness. I’ve always thought pass protection was much harder to grasp than run blocking…then add in his size and his overall smarts…I actually wouldn’t mind this guy. I’d definitely like him more than Pouncey or Solder.

As of now I’d be content with Castonzo, Liuget, or Sherrod. I’m kind of shying away from Liuget though because there are some decent defensive tackle prospects in the mid rounds. One guy I’ve been liking is Jarvis Jenkins out of Clemson. If we could get a promising LT early on then I’d rather go that route than the DT route. William Joseph and Barry Cofield both showed that you can get a solid DT in the middle rounds…

    • Matthew Kiernankujo says:

As for as mid-round DTs go, I like Terrell McClain out of USF. Tenacious, pass-rusher type. Very good prospect, except for the fact that he went to one of the douchiest schools in the nation.

  3. Robert Hodgesrlhjr says:

With the top kids gone before pick 19, Sherrod is the man.
And I feel he’s Reese’s type of player. Nothng but upside.
Plus, he’s held his own against the best edge rushers the SEC has to offer. That is pure Reese type thinkng.

If Sherrod is available, and OT is the pick, Reese jumps on this kid with both feet. IMHO.

  4. Chip Kimblewvchirodoc says:

Willy Jo was a first round pick. Also, nobody has brought up Marvin austin.

    • Billy BillyS says:

If that’s a response to my last sentence…that’s the point. He was a bust whereas Cofield was a mid-round pick. Thus, a DT in the 1st round is a little risky unless the guy is a stud. Liuget has great size, strength, and motor…but his overall college production hasn’t been as impressive, hence his steady rise as of late. His rise in stock is mainly because of how people project him at the NFL level. He could do well, but it’s still a risk. I feel that grabbing one of those solid OT prospects in the first round would be a much less risky route than getting someone like Luiget (or Pouncey for that matter).

      - Smith
      - Castonzo
      - Sherrod

I’d be all for 1 of those 3 if available.

  5. David Levittdlev says:

I’m a big fan of Sherrod. He is not a mauler, but he gets the job done. He was the LT on the line for a team that had averaged over 200 yds/game rushing for the past 2 seasons. And this is against those good SEC defenses.

  6. Steve Smithshmitty013 says:

Anyone who hasn’t read Nosh’s post for the contest, go back to the previous thread and read it. Nosh, dude that was f’in hilarious. I was in tears when you brought Angel Lugo onto the field to slice Vick’s achilles tendon. That was the hardest I’ve laughed in as long as I can remember.

  7. Mike Jefferisny92mike says:

I think Sherrod is the best LT tackle prospect in this draft class. Castonzo appears slow for speed rushers. Gets stood up to much and rather than driving his attacker back he slides him off very similar to David Diehl against speed rushers.

Personally, if you want the best left tackle in this class Sherrod is your guy.
