Dan moving on up! I won’t see this, but hope you enjoy it. Congrats.
congrats dan!
Pro Football NYC always comes up on my Facebook feed with nothing but Jets content, so I deleted them. You should tell them that whoever is in charge of covering the Giants is doing a woeful job at it. Beyond listening in to support Dan, I’ve got no interest in this group as it is now.
Congrats Dan. I’m glad to see such big things starting to happen for you and G101.
Peace in the Middle East is predicated on both groups leaving each other alone and recognizing each other as co-equal. They won’t.
BALLINNNNNNNN’!!!!!
When I grow up (no immediate plans) I want to be like Dan B!!!
Dan – Jump in there early and DOMINATE our little brother’s hour and THEN get in Big Blue detail hour numeber two!
number (I hate this keyboard!) :-)
As has been the case for most of this preseason, I agree entirely with the concerns and hopes elucidated by Jim Stoll at the end of the previous thread. Most of you know that my main point of contention has been the health and quality of our offensive line. No matter which bus you ride on that particular issue, we should all agree that this line must improve its play exponentially in order for us to even have a hope to be in the playoffs, muchless make it to the Super Bowl. I continue to be vexed by the persistent injuries on this team, though I am pleased that the key guys all practiced today and appear ready for Sunday. Nevertheless, my optimism in regards to this season, expounded upon in the last thread, where I laid out my predictions about our win/loss total, is consistently tempered by the presence of vital components of our team on our injury report; without O’Hara, Webster and Ross, the potential of this team will yet again be squandered, miracle catches or not.
So that everyone knows what I’m talking about, and because it probably took him a long time to write out:

I’ve enjoyed this thread. That time of year. Rosy predictions based on a combination of fan loyalty, paper talent, former moments of on the field display of talent, amnesia as to the poorer moments and the pervading hope that we will be a good team therefore we will be a good team.
I really don’t have a good feel for where this team is right now (by good I mean a true sense of who they are).
The facts at hand are mostly disheartening – last year they performed miserably almost to a man; they were similarly injured almost to a man; this preseason has been replete with injuries to virtually every starter, albeit relatively minor ones that appear to be working themselves out. Scores aside, over the course of the first 3 games, what passed as our first unit performed miserably in almost every phase. The 4th game was a definite turn for the better.
Of course, we are still coached by Coughlin and Gilbride and we know the limitations that creates all by itself.
It looks, as the season opens, that O’Hara, Ross, Bullock, Phillips and Snee will be nagging injury stories to watch. O’Hara looks to be the most serious given his prominent roll on the offense. Ross appears to be the more serious injury, but thanks to the presence of TT not as big of an overall issue to the team.
The LB’ng corps looks weak as we start the season. Although FF hates him, I think Ralph V. is spot on in observing that Bullock looks like a shell of his former self right now (and given that we keep conceding after the fact that these types of knees take 2 years for even young guys, the hope that the 33 year old veteran rounds into 100% former physical shape immediately is just that: hope trying to overcome reality) and yet appears to be a better option than Sintim; Goff takes the middle by default; and Boley has yet to prove anything.
I can’t tell whether Canty is healthy enough to practice as of today and where he will be on the scale of 1% to 100% come Sunday. If he is out that looks like Cofield and Bernard as the starting tackles, which although perhaps better than the starting tandem of Cofiield and Bernard in 2009, I don’t know how much better.
Kenny looks to be coming but not all the way there. Webster we want to love if he’s the 2008 version playing press, but he scares the crap out of me if he’s asked to read and react ala 2006/2009. Tuck looks like he’s ready to start the season, as does Osi. Kiwi seems to be a different issue. Fewel really showed nothing about how he intends to use the 3 of them so don’t know what to expect. part of me wants to see him back at LB if Bullock really isn’t physical able to perform (does he look Danny Clark-ish?) and Sintim can’t step up..
My guess is that the defense is going to take 3-6 games to reach its potential, which assumes everyone stays healthy, Kenny and Bullock each get healthier, and Ross is actually able to contribute.
Offensively, game 4 agaisnt the Pats gave a much needed confidence boost. But the O-Line hasn’t played together all season. O’Hara, Snee and Seubert are also nursing some degree of injuries and the season has yet to start. I think we all believe that before long Andrews is a starter either moving Seubert to center (depending on O’Hara’s health) or the sideline. Bradshaw should be very big this year if the O-Line can perform better than it did last year. He doesn’t need huge holes, and he will make alot of runs out of nothing (like Barry Sanders or perhaps Tiki Barber used to), but he does need some holes.
Eli will be Eli and the receivers by now are an area of strength. Where the offensive wildcard comes in is the playcalling of Gilbride. Whatever else you want to say about his abilities, when it comes to scoring TDs from inside the opponents 20, we have been ranked in the bottom 1/3 of the league for the past 4 seasons.
of course our special teams seem destined to start the season as among the leagues worst units in every phase but FG conversion%.
All of that being said, I can see this team going anywhere from 4-12 to 12-4; I think it that enigmatic at the moment. I agree with whoever said it above: the NFC East looks weak this year to a team. The class of the Conference looks to be Green Bay and New Orleans. Aside from wishful thinking based on blind irrational hatred, I think the Vikes will drop like a stone this year. I don’t see anyone in the west as very good, and while I think the Falcons make the playoffs, they don’t impress me much at the start. So warts and all, the Giants may find themselves with a playoff bound record simply because the overall competition level in the conference appears subpar.
Moreover, everything could brak just right: Eli could throw for over 4,000 yds again; Nicks could catch 15 TD passes; Bradshaw could rush for 1500 yds. all of that strikes me as possible. Osi and Tuck could each record 12+ sack seasons, with the rest of the DE’s, DT’s and LBs contributing another 20+ sacks. That puts us back around 50 and that covers a lot of sins.
So bottom line, I can see the team going to opposite extreems. I guess that’s why, at the end of the day, Coughlin teams seem to end up hovering around 8-8
Well I finally f**’n figured out how to log in. After two years of following you guys here and being envious of your knowledge of the Giants (even though I have been following them since Tucker Fredrickson, Homer Jones, Spider Lockhart etc…).
Sparky — an old timer. Welcome! Only a guy in his mid fifties could admit to taking 2 years to figure out how to log on!!
That takes courage.
Welcome to the family.
Alright, another senior citizen!! Welcome. Some of these young ‘uns need some educating about just how horrible the past was.
Tucker Fredrickson brings back incredible memories. I remember walking into a number of joints on Third Avenue where I would see Tucker hanging with the models (Mellon’s) and gulping down drinks and burgers with some of the Maras (a variety of watering holes, but most prominently PJ Clark’s, not the phony one you can go to now but the real deal that it was). It took me a few years to figure out that while he was worthless as a running back he was apparently a great wing-man for his buddies who owned the team.
And who can forget Spider being put in at wide receiver and catching a TD pass in a critical game?
Anyway, welcome, and keep posting.
Yep and had to wait for Rocky Thompson to finally return a kickoff for a TD was an eternity.
By the way; I hate to admit this but I live in the Philly Area where the fans really suck.
I feel TT pains here.
Dan,
I just noticed that you will be discussing the sage trade of Sage Rosenfels? Really? There’s nothing more germane, or more interesting, to discuss? PFNYC is lamesauce.
PFNYC guy- And now we have Dan Benton, chieftain of Giants101, the site about the other team in New York. Dan, how do you think the acquisition of Sage Rosenjewbagel will affect the Giants?
Dan- Well, I think…
PFNYC guy- Thanks, Dan. Now for our new segment, “How fat can he get?,” where we attempt to imagine how fat Rex Ryan (all praises be upon his girthy belly) can get and STILL lead us to victory…
Its Rosencopter
Dan, what Kujo really means is that in your vain pursuit of an ever successful career, you are proseltyzing yourself on the altar of our arch enemy who sets you up by asking you the most irrelevant question they can. Why not: “Dan, How do you think the seven-member practice squad will affect the team’s performance this year?”
Really Jets fans?
He should be proselytizing but not prostrating himself at the Alter of Rex (the Sun God of the Meadowlands).
Dan, here’s your opening line: “Before I answer that I’d like to say that my bet is the Giants win another Lombardi Trophy before the Jets reach the Super Bowl, and that’s exactly as things should be.”
That will be sure to get you a name.
or better yet, I’m sure the Giants will get to the super bowl before the jets get back to .500
