Happy Birthday, Giants 101!

September 7th, 2010 at 7:42 AM
By Dan Benton

On this date six short years ago, Giants 101 in its current form was born.

Then a part of the new and seemingly innovative Most Valuable Network (MVN), Giants 101 was a unique blend of fan perspective and New York Giants news. It was one of only three New York Giants blogs in existence, and the only one affiliated with a sports blog network — an idea that was still relatively new at the time.

Having blogged for free on Xanga for approximately a year prior to that, I had a little experience, but nothing that could prepare me for the things to come. At that time only my family and close friends were reading my Giants thoughts/rants, and at no point did I ever expect to be at the helm for something as large, popular and powerful as the Giants 101 we know today.

Within the last year Giants 101 has branched off and become independent for the very first time, in the process experiencing a bit of a rebirth. Not only is G101 now a popular website, we’ve sort of reached a happy medium between a sports blog and a news site. And with the help of the other five writers (not to mention the ones of the past), we’ve also established G101 as a brand…an international brand.

G101 Facts:

  • Giants 101 is accessed daily in 83 different countries and territories.
  • In the last calendar year, G101 has been accessed in approximately 180 different countries and territories.
  • The traffic at G101 has recently reached an all-time high. We currently experience over 1.22 million hits per month.

Other G101 Tidbits:

  • The very first Giants 101 logo was simple the name “Giants 101″ written in chalk on a chalkboard.
  • Since our first redesign back in our first year, one thing has remained a constant on G101: The Twin Towers always stand tall here.
  • Giants 101 has been recognized on Yahoo! Sports, AOL Sports, CBS Sports, ESPN, Giants.com, Madison Square Garden, SNY, Pro Football NYC, NBC New York, Inside Football and various other news networks.

G101 Awards:

  • Deadspin’s Blogdom’s Best (Giants blog)
  • 2005 Sports Blog Awards Best NFL Blog
  • 2007 Blogger’s Choice Award for Best Sports Blog
  • “Blog of the Day” on January 21st 2007

On behalf of Hazem, Sean, Rich, Simon and Serena, I want to say THANK YOU! Without you readers, your constant support and promotion, we would be nothing. We could write all day long, but if no one visits…it’s irrelevant. The community you help create here is every bit as valuable as the work we do. So this day is as much yours celebrate as it is ours. So, again, thank you!

Question of the day: How did you first hear about Giants 101?

  1. Happy birthday to the best damn Giants blog online!

And I echo Dan’s sentiments…the readers of G101 are the best around and we would be nowhere without you all…so thank you!

Lastly…three cheers for Benton, whose blood, sweat, and tears have kept this juggernaut running for over 6 years now!

Happy Birthday G101! Still the first place i log into each morning and the last each night.

I found this site through a google widget called in the mix, kept linking stories of yours back to MVN. When I first started on here its was Dan, Haz, Paul, Sean and David. Some writers have come and gone since (Murph, Brandon, Kyle, Rob?) but the site as a whole has gone from strength to strenght, based on a fantastic community of writers and poster and a love of all things Giants related (well for the most part anyway, excluing TRBM and that tebow guy).

Its all the posters who make this site what it is but its the writers who we should be thankful to the writers who keep it all glued together and turning over. Even now with so much instant information floating around the ether they are able to produce a high quality, imformative product and remain at the top of their game.

    Think about this:

Giants 101 has outlasted the following:

    - MVN
    - Screaming Sports
    - MSG Game On! (full Giants coverage)
    - Sports Cartel

Giants 101 has been around longer than:

    - Bleacher Report
    - Yahoo Sports! Blogs
    - AOL FanHouse

That list can grow, I’m sure…but that’s pretty significant. Six years is worth celebrating. Gotta love it.

  4. ThatsMyQuarterback says:

Dan, congrats on all the success of the site. All the hard work by yourself and the rest of the writers really shows up in the finished product. Now all you need to do is to start selling some ad space on here and put some extra coin in your pocket!

Just a quick note about the final roster. Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet but is anyone else a little nervous about the back end of our WR group. The top three are studs, we all know that, but God forbid we lose one of them for an extended period of time, do we really trust Cruz!, Barden, or Calhoun to really step up and fill the void. Sure VC had a monster preseason, but it was the preseason. That is why I thought Hagan was going to make the roster, aside from his Special Teams play (which was probably slipping a little bit), he was a reliable 4th receiver/insurance policy if any of the young studs got hurt. Am I over thinking a bit here? I dunno…

I heard about this site from Deadspin (when it was actually funny) and I have been a regular reader ever since. Thanks guys.

And thank you all for the kudos and continued support! For those of you that interact with me away from G101 (on more of a personal level), you know first-hand how much I appreciate the support!

I wish I could thank every single person here individually with a handshake, because you all deserve it.

Been around since the MVN days myself. I remember when you guys moved to Screaming Sports.. I didn’t know where you went. Then one day Demo told me on MVN about SS. The next time you guys moved and came here.. I paid attention. Didn’t wanna lose you again.

I don’t post a whole lot myself, but read just about every word written on here. I’ve tried to throw a post in every now and then, but mainly I come here to hear all the knowledge that shoots around here about my beloved Giants.

Oh, and Dan…. Not sure whether to thank you for this or not……….. but you gotme hooked on Goal Line Blitz back in season 3, and I still spend a fortune on there. I do still enjoy the game, so I don’tmind dropping some coin into it every now and then.

      Anyways………… Happy Birthday G101 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Matthew Kiernankujo says:

I like John Fox but think that Cowher would be the first on our list. We all assume that he’d run a 3-4, but there’s nothing guaranteeing that. Plus, most teams have some sort of 3-4 mixed into their defensive scheme. Perhaps he would increase that over time as we acquire the necessary players to go to it full time.

  8. Matthew Kiernankujo says:

When the relationship between Albert Haynesworth and the Redskins continued to deteriorate over the weekend, MDS had a great post which essentially said this:

The Redskins either need to accept Haynesworth as a Redskin (and stop anonymously ripping him) or cut bait once and for all.

It looks like they are trying for door number two.

So how much of his contract would Washington have to eat ?
Again , Im incredibly thankful that he didnt come to the Giants . I still dont know whether the 80mill offer from the Giants was real , or just making sure to drive the price up for Snyder .

  9. TheCatch says:

Congrats 101 and thanks for keeping this ship afloat. 1.22 million in 83 different counties is reason to feel proud. Continued success

Found you years ago surfing. I appreciate the limited amount of troll interuptions and general respect shown to others (most of the time), I know it could be worse.

One wish would be for a roster player to blog.

  10. Terence CAVILLGIANTT says:

I first want to wish the site a Happy Birthday- Dan , I also want to thank you for your forbearance in handling some of the more unruly arguments that explode every now and then . Like a bouncer who handles his job with words rather than force , sometimes your work goes unappreciated .I havent been here since the beginning , I used to get my weekly Giant fix chatting with my brother-in law , but suddenly he became this big shot CFO flyig around to all his companies offices , so he had no time . I always seemed to know more about what was going on when I talked to fan poseurs so I just hung in space – eventually I googled sites and found this one on the second or third look – I never went beyond here and its been a pleasure (and sometimes a pain )finding people with different areas of expertise that willingly pass on their info .
Ive learned more about so many different areas that I never thought of as important -For instance , I learned that when you enter a walkin freezer , you check whether it can be opened from the inside and also where the light switch is . I mean info like this is priceless and could well help me land a job at Costco (Target is to far for a commute ) where else than here on G101 ?

I do have one question however – it seems to me that there are maybe 30 to 40 regular posters on here – by that I mean with the biggest stretch possible , more than a couple of times a month- So who the h-ll are the other million or so hits that the sight gets – I can figure some are accidents , someone googles giants wanting large prehistoric monsters playing baseball in SF for example , but that can only be a few of them .
Ive always taught that you can learn just as much from someone making a mistake as someone who does it right – In fact , I quite often want to make mistakes to be able to see the thought process necessary to get the right answer rather than just getting the right answer and not really being sure how I got there . So you million or so hits out there – get the lead out ! Ask away or if you prefer like some on here , come show us how smart you are

    • Dan BentonDan Benton says:

      Thanks, man!

There are A LOT of people that just read and don’t post. I know an entire firm that reads our RSS feeds, but not a single one of them post. Also, other than a handful, we have a large amount of female readers who don’t dare post.

Also, we have a serious amount of military men stationed all over the world who read g101, but don’t post for obvious reasons.

So they’re out there. Slowly and surely I am approving more readers to comment each day, so it’s only a matter of them taking that final step to the comments section!

    • TheCatch says:

I imagine many don’t read beyond the writers main posts.

      • Heather Lefkovenjm0m says:

I can’t speak for the other female readers out there, but I read the writers posts and comments all the time. On an occasion I post a comment or two as well. You guys do get a little heated sometimes and the season hasn’t even begun. It can be intimidating and I usually hold my own with most guys when it comes to football just fine.
