The preseason is finally done; cut down day has come and gone; now that we know the names of the 53 men who are this year’s New York Giants (for now), all that’s left to do is wait until Sunday’s opener in Carolina. In the meantime, here are some random thoughts on that group of 53 men:
Only two TE’s?
In cutting both Bear Pascoe and Scott Chandler, the Giants have chosen to go only two tight ends. Take that one of them is a ne’er-stay-healthy who can’t block for his life, and you’ve really only got one TE on the roster. Having Pascoe and Jake Ballard on the practice squad is a great safety net, but how can this offense operate if Boss gets hurt in the first quarter of a game? Line Rich Seubert up at TE?
This seemingly thin area of the depth chart had people wondering immediately if the Giants were bringing another TE in, with league-wide trade target Greg Olsen’s name coming up quickly. On one hand, it seems obvious the Giants need to bring another person in. On the other hand, they really liked Pascoe– so maybe they’re content stashing him on the PS until they need him.
Youngsters at the backend:
Although it might have taken a groin/abdomen surgery to make Giants fans’ dreams come true, Sinorice Moss is finally gone and replaced with young, athletic talent at the backend of the WR depth chart. Victor Cruz! will be the fourth guy into the WR rotation and Duke Calhoun becomes the special teams maven, more than Moss could say for any of his time here. Now if only that really tall guy could find a way onto the field in the red zone…
Boothe back in?
Kevin Boothe will be crossing his fingers and praying that someone gets hurt by the time he’s ready to come off the PUP list, because with Shawn Andrews and Mitch Petrus in the fold there’s not much use for another interior offensive linemen. It’s going to be interesting to see what this offense does if Shaun O’Hara misses any time: does Adam Koets play center? does Will Beatty come in at LT and push everyone inside? does Andrews push Seubert inside?
Of course, if Shawn Andrews is ready to play, we have a whole different set of questions to ask, starting with: is Rich Seubert still a starter?
Told you guys Coughlin wouldn’t let this one go. He’s not even healthy (knee) but still found a way to stick. Somehow, Gerris Wilkinson (groin) did the same.
Speaking of these two guys, one of them is probably the first to go if the Giants had to make a move like bringing in a veteran DB, or signing someone like Bomar or Pascoe from the PS. If Clint Sintim has dropped off the radar of the LB depth chart, maybe you want to throw Dave Tollefson‘s name in the “first-to-go” hat too.
Congrats D.J.
No, not you DJ Ware (who was dangled on the trading block prior to final cuts). We’re giving a big shout out to D.J. Johnson, who made the be the team as the 5th cornerback and perhaps one of the punt gunners. His preseason play wasn’t great, but his competition was Courtney Brown and Seth Williams. Brown was terrible, and Williams found a home on the practice squad. After making an NFL team by de facto, Johnson should be sending mail bombs to any veteran cornerbacks on the couch waiting for a call.
But hey, at least he’s not Courtney Brown.
The Aussie Punter
The NY DailyNews kept insinuating that the Giants were praying for a punter to hit the waiver-wire, but that seems silly in light of two good preseason performances down the stretch. Congrats Matt Dodge, you’re an NFL player. Just don’t shank it too often, and you should be OK.

What surprised me is Adrian Tracy making the roster and not put on the PS. The kid looked well in preseason but is raw for a slb.
umm tracy was stashed away on ir. he will be given another shot next year
Ish. I totally forgot about that. Thanks
no problem
Who is this “TC” guy and why is he making rational thoughts on FG holder?
TC: Ross “getting better,” Reynaud a WR + starting punt returner, “we’ll see” on O’Hara/Ross for Wed, Sage “has to be ready” as holder. #nyg
Reynaud a WR?!
Reynauld is a RB but can and has played some WR as well
He was a WR in college and he was drafted as a WR. The Vikes converted him to a RB. The Giants list him as a WR.
Rosenfels worked as a holder after practice. Matt Dodge is still the team’s top holder, but Rosenfels must be prepared if something happens.
Simon- I agree with and have been saying the same thing about TE since Saturday night..There has to be something in ht works as far as TE goes…No way they go through season with One TE and one HBack on Roster. Seubert is acceptable as a second blocking TE but they need another guy behind Boss that can both block and catch or they risk being ultra predictable..
Coughlin said more of a concern than the team’s lack of tight ends is keeping Travis Beckum healthy. There are offensive linemen/defensive linemen ready to fill in at tight end if needed, and the team has two on the practice squad.
I’m guessing that Seubert and Tollefson are the backup plan…
Back in business for Big Blue line
from The Blue Screen – NY Daily News Blogs
After an injury plagued summer, the Giants’ first-team offensive line was fully intact for their first practice of the first week of the NFL’s regular season.
i’ll drink to that!
I’m hoping by starting OL they are including Andrews. Andrews is an upgrade to Seubert imo. Seubert would be a great blocking TE and fill in.
Neither the Giants nor the Jets will be blacked out on local TV in Week 1, but there sure are going to be a lot of empty seats at New Meadowlands Stadium.
The Giants say they have sold all non-premium seating for Sunday’s opener against the Panthers, meaning the game will be broadcast locally. But the club admitted yesterday that around 1,200 club seats requiring a PSL remain unsold.
The Jets, meanwhile, are in even worse shape sales-wise for their opener next Monday night against the Ravens, with more than 1,500 non-premium seats still available in the lower sections of their new 82,500-seat home despite a recent 50-percent slash in the price of the required PSL.

So I finally broke down after a long time of just reading after the switch from the old site and got an account. I really like our team IF our defense gets a pass rush and IF we get some sort of a ground game we really should make the playoffs and possibly go deep. Also, I kinda have a fantasy help question as to who I should start in my wr/rb flex and te position:
my team is:
kevin kolb – qb
ray rice -rb
ryan grant – rb
anquan boldin – wr
steve smith (car) – wr
steve smith (giants) – wr
____________ – wr/rb
zach miller – te
lawrence tynes – k (I forsee trouble in the redzone again this year)
vikings -dst
my bench is:
todd heap – te
devin hester – wr
laurent robinson – wr
mike wallace – wr
mario manningham – wr
michael jenkins – wr
laurence maroney – rb
RIGHT NOW I am leaning towards mike wallace but I am unsure cause alot of them have potential
Well is your flex W/R/T or is it just W/R? if its all three I would put Todd Heap in there. If its Just the two then I would go with Mike Wallace.
Also, what ever happened to Barden once Cruz! exploded everyone stopped talking about him… Who is considered the #4 Wideout?
Food for thought; are we seeing signs that Reese has put some pressure on TC and KG to open things up. First the end around and flee flicker, followed by keeping Reese’s man Beckum kept around over Pascoe. What about our signature run it right at them 2 TE set? I loved Beckum when we selected him for his great hands and the added twist he brings as an athletic H Back, but how would he see the field under Killdrives playbook. Here’s hoping that Reese told them to make use of all the offensive weapons in creative way OR ELSE!!!!
Don’t mind Seubert as a second blocking TE in third and short/goal line situations, but elsewise it would be telegraphing a run. We don’t need to be letting them know whats coming, hell they aready know when the shotgun draw is coming lets not give them any more help.
So the question becomes will they be creative enough to use Seubert as a decoy. Past playing calling would indicate no.
I’ll drink to that Catch……In fact, I’ll most likely drink because of that.
Without a second true TE, the running game get’s choked. And if Boss gets hurt what the fk do they do? It almost sounds like they have their sights on another multi purpose TE. If not, how could they even risk losing Pascoe?
The game is a’foot. They already lost #5 pick, Olsen has to be no less than a three stright up. Perhaps a 4 plus a player (Pascoe) to be named later.
I dont even know the TE situation in Chicago. But you have to think something is going on if the Bear offensive coordinator does not want a pass catching TE.
Then again, maybe he does’nt. Who was the Rams TE during his years there?
How much production does he need from a TE?
I think a scouting report/profile on Olsen is required. Where is Samardjiza?

Very much like our Sintim situation. Talented player held back by a stupid coach… gets a new start… and amazingly he comes on strong.
Sweet vindication…
