With the preseason wrapped up and teams looking forward to the start of the regular season next week, final roster cuts are the next step between theĀ New York Giants and their opening kickoff against the Carolina Panthers on September 12th.
Now as we look ahead to the formation of the 53-man roster, keep in mind that the G-Men may look to add a few pieces from other teams after final cuts. New York is lacking a presence in the return game – and could be in the market for a return man, as well as depth in the secondary and may even look for help at quarterback behind Eli Manning. There are a lot of variables for Giants G.M Jerry Reese going into tomorrow, but for today – we will focus on the 53 best Giants going into the season.
That said, it is very likely that you will see one or two outside additions to these Giants after final roster cuts.

NOTES
- The Giants are likely to be in the market for a #5 cornerback, and could also possibly look for a veteran quarterback this upcoming week. That puts Gerris Wilkinson and Jay Alford both in danger of being cut.
- Zak DeOssie and Chase Blackburn are two of the Giants more important special teams players. The chances of either one of them being let go are going to be slim, with the issues the Giants have on their special teams units going into the season.
- Dave Tollefson has had another solid camp for the Giants, but with the additions of Jason Pierre-Paul and Linval Joseph in the draft, this could be the year he’s bumped off the roster.

Watching the game again. Just witnessed my biggest pet peeve again – having a non-QB hold on field goals.
Not only is Dodge raw as a punter, but when ish goes down on the hold, he has no clue what to do. Why our team continues to not have the backup QB learn how to do it is beyond me.
But who am I?
Also, Darius Heyward-Bey looks really good this year. Has had some sweet catches. Also put on at least 10-15 pounds so hes doing pretty well as a run blocker. Break out season for him me thinks..
Yeah, as you’ll remember, I was pretty high on this kid as a project who could turn out really well. I initially liked him over Nicks until you sent me to the tapes on Nicks and your boy from Rutgers. After that I was all over Nicks, but I still liked DHB as a very good alternative. I haven’t seen him at all since he was drafted so have no idea about him other than that he was a big disappointment last season.
If I remember correctly, you liked him too, but you were blinded by the Rutgers hype (LOL) and only ranked DHB #2 and Nicks #3 when I had Nicks #1 and DHB #2 and Britt nowhere to be found thanks to what I had been told about his personality by someone close to the Rutgers program.
Doesn’t matter who was right back then, but I’m glad this kid looks like he’ll be good. I just hope he doesn’t become too good. I think we may have the Niners in our future path.
I agree about Gatrell, FF55. I was talking him up over the summer as a natural #3 or #4 should Brown fail to make an impact. He’s got a good combination of size, power and speed. He reminds me of Rueben Droughns, a guy who was a pretty decent short-yardage back for us way-back when. I like him more than Ware, who never seems to put it all together. But at the end of the day, we’ll keep him over Gatrell because he can return kicks–not well, but reliably.
As to norm’s fantastic post about CB depth, I sincerely hope it doesn’t come back to bite us in the ****. All of the best teams in our conference are pass-heavy teams: Saints, Packers, Cowboys, Vikings, Eagles. We got passed the Pats with a constant onslaught of passrushers. Fewell’s scheme doesn’t seem to be oriented for that. It should be interesting to see if we get similar results.
By the way, Kujo, stop using your Jerome Johnson to hit on Pat Traina on Twitter…
True dat. I think I posted some time ago that Ware may get a shot because he has good speed, and had not muffed a kick/punt all pre-season.
But I a perfect world, Gartrell would be the choice.
Truthfully, while I loved brown’s upside provided he fully recovered from the surgery, he has shown the least this preseason. In a truly just world he would be the guy who didn’t make it. I think he’ll be good, but that is NOT clear at this point.
Gartrell Johnson earned a spot on the roster last night. Whether he’ll get it or not is the question. He should.
Dallas is another team dangerously thin in just about every area besides wide receiver. Their backup te is out for the season, the o line… no explanation needed, the secondary is pretty scary. They only have 3 safeties, one of whom is the injured Sensabaugh, and at corner, other than Jenkins, all they really have is Newman and Scandrick. Not impressive.
Im sure theres a name or 2 im missing in Dallas’ secondary, but after seeing what we did to them last year on the back end, and seeing how they added no one, im not really afraid of their defense. Offensively, our D line looks about ready to dominate their offensive line.
And as Rich pointed out, with that schedule, and these issues lingering… Could be a long season in big D
