New York Giants Final 53 Man Roster Prediction

September 3rd, 2010 at 12:32 PM
By Hazem Kiswani

With the preseason wrapped up and teams looking forward to the start of the regular season next week, final roster cuts are the next step between the  New York Giants and their opening kickoff against the Carolina Panthers on September 12th.

Now as we look ahead to the formation of the 53-man roster, keep in mind that the G-Men may look to add a few pieces from other teams after final cuts. New York is lacking a presence in the return game – and could be in the market for a return man, as well as depth in the secondary and may even look for help at quarterback behind Eli Manning. There are a lot of variables for Giants G.M Jerry Reese going into tomorrow, but for today – we will focus on the 53 best Giants going into the season.

That said, it is very likely that you will see one or two outside additions to these Giants after final roster cuts.

Quarterback (2)

Eli Manning, Rhett Bomar

Running Back (5)

Ahmad Bradshaw, Brandon Jacobs, Madison Hedgecock, DJ Ware, Andre Brown

Wide Receiver (6)

Steve Smith, Hakeem Nicks, Mario Manningham, Ramses Barden, Victor Cruz, Derek Hagan

Offensive Line (9)

Chris Snee, Shaun O’Hara, David Diehl, Kareem McKenzie, Rich Seubert, Adam Koets, William Beatty, Shawn Andrews , Mitch Petrus

Tight End (3)

Kevin Boss, Travis Beckum, Bear Pascoe

Defensive Line (9)

Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora, Mathias Kiwanuka, Jason Pierre-Paul, Chris Canty, Barry Cofield, Linval Joseph, Rocky Bernard, Jay Alford

Linebacker (9)

Michael Boley, Clint Sintim, Keith Bulluck, Johnathon Goff, Bryan Kehl, Phillip Dillard, Zak DeOssie, Chase Blackburn, Gerris Wilkinson

Defensive Back (8)

Corey Webster, Aaron Ross, Terrell Thomas, Bruce Johnson, Antrel Rolle, Kenny Phillips, Michael Johnson, Deon Grant

Kicker (1)

Lawrence Tynes

Punter (1)

Matt Dodge

NOTES

- The Giants are likely to be in the market for a #5 cornerback, and could also possibly look for a veteran quarterback this upcoming week. That puts Gerris Wilkinson and Jay Alford both in danger of being cut.

- Zak DeOssie and Chase Blackburn are two of the Giants more important special teams players. The chances of either one of them being let go are going to be slim, with the issues the Giants have on their special teams units going into the season.

- Dave Tollefson has had another solid camp for the Giants, but with the additions of Jason Pierre-Paul and Linval Joseph in the draft, this could be the year he’s bumped off the roster.

You think they cut Wilk over Blackburn??

    • I certainly have that feeling at this point. I think if it came down to those two, with Wilkinson’s nagging injury issues and the value Blackburn brings on ST, it could be Wilkinson to go.

    Hey Demo,

You gonna go to the Tuskers’ home opener? I’m thinking about it. Pretty cheap tix and Fassel is the coach!

  3. GOAT56 says:

Nice job. I agree with your offensive predictions. Defense is much harder and DL is just plain difficult. I think we all agree there will be 9 DL it’s just which 9. I just don’t see us keeping 8 LBs unless its just for a few days to find a 5th CB. I think the play of Wilk and Kehl really puts Blackburn in question though his special teams value is a fair point. Regardless only 2 out of the 3 will make the final roster.

  4. FactCheck says:

Big Ben’s suspension officially reduced to 4 games…

  5. Tollefson wont get get. Hes durable and plays like hell on special teams

    • 5 DEs? I don’t think we’re going to carry 10 defensive linemen. That’s too many inactives on gameday.

Also, who gets bumped for Tollefson, considering the fact that we already are likely to see a bump for a defensive player to add that 5th cornerback.

      • GOAT56 says:

I think Tollefson will make it but bc we are using so many DE base packages that we can play 5 DEs much more than 5 DTs. I understand that last DT cut is really hard but I think only 4 DTs make it.

#Further tests revealed what initial tests showed: Browns rookie RB Montario Hardesty has a torn ACL. Out for year.

  7. KD says:

Giants are 7 pt favs vs carolina.

  8. Haz- Don’t know. Just a gut feeling.

    • Yeah, he was a tough guy to put on the cut list – I’d like to see him on the team, just not sure how it can happen with the help needed elsewhere and the fact that Pierre-Paul should see the field.

I don’t believe you should draft a guy in the top half of the first round just to have him play 30 snaps his first season.

  9. KD says:

My initial thoughts on NFL Week 1…Input is welcomed. Home teams in CAPS:

    s.d. -5 1/2 @ K.C.

    bal +2 1/2 @ NYJ

    den + 2 1/2 @ JAX

    ind @ HOU Over 46

    cle @ T.B. Under 37

    • Beware Kansas City at home, they have improved and the Chargers don’t have V-Jax or McNeil.

    • Nosh says:

Absolutely hate Denver. It was a bad team to begin with and McDaniels has made it worse. JAX will cover.

P.S. Cleveland is my super sleeper dark horse team to come out of no where and win 9 games this year.

    Observations from Noshtradamus
    - Bradshaw is going to have a monster year. So heres the question, do you pay him? I say no for a few reasons. 1. Injury prone. He’s never made it through a full season healthy. I expect this to be his first (contract year). 2. He’s kind of a knucklehead. Shows up late to meetings, was smoking a blunt in the car when Plax shot himself. I love watching him play, but I don’t know how you pay a guy like that big $$$. For a position thats very replaceable.

    - No way Bomar is a number 2. Way too inaccurate. I like his long term upside but would not trust him for even a few quarters in the regular season.

    - Sintim can play in this league, but not at LB. He’s a DE or a 3-4 Rush LB. Thats what his body type looks like and thats what his skills translate to.

    - Beatty needs to add some bulk and some balls. Not giving up on him, but he’s got some ways to go.

    - I know it seems premature to give up on a player so early, and yes, I’m no scout. But I remember the Nicks one handed catch against UWV and the spin move he put on his guy, that showed me all I needed to see. I knew he could play in the league. In the preseason thats all I look for from the rooks. Show me one play, one flash that shows you belong. Haven’t seen it from Dillard or Barden. Dillard looks too small and slow. Barden just looks slow. If he wasn’t a 3rd round pick he’s be cut.

    - Cruz can play in this league. and has shown it. They’d be fools to keep Barden over Cruz.

    - Dodge will lose us at least one game this year. Weather it be on a bad hold or punt. Don’t trust him one bit.

    • I hate to say it, but I agree with you on Sintim.

This offseason he might be trade bait. He is a 3-4 rush linebacker and could make a major impact there. He just does not have the instincts it takes to play outside in the 4-3.

Teams like Buffalo/Miami/KC/New England would be lucky to have him. He just does not fit the scheme.

      • GOAT56 says:

I expect Stintum to be Kiwi’s replacement at DE next year.

I disgree on Dodge. I think he will win us a game with his punting when the weather gets bad. Look at his progress in 4 preseason games. Our punting game will be much improved over last year.
