Only two weeks into the preseason and the Giants have already suffered injuries to an unnerving number of their starters (and potential starters). Thus far, Giants fans have heard the bad news about Steve Smith, Mario Manningham, and Tim Brown, to name a few. However, it doesn’t stop there.
Now the Giants are discussing the news about a new batch of injuries nagging the 2010 team. Specifically, the following:
- Aaron Ross has been diagnosed with plantar fasciitis, which if you recall, was the same issue Eli Manning dealt with for a great deal of last season. At this point, Tom Coughlin doesn’t seem to think it will keep Ross out in any substantial way, but a bum foot can only limit a CB.
- In addition to the other offensive injuries, the Giants also disclosed the injury to Ramses Barden, who suffered a stress fracture of a transverse process, per Mike Garafolo. However, this will not require surgery, according to Coughlin, and “is an issue of pain” at this point. Hopefully this will not have any long-term effects.
- In what seems like the most ominous sounding injury, Michael Johnson is dealing with disc-related problem in his back. This is eerily reminiscent of Antonio Pierce’s injury last year (herniated discs in his neck), which ended his career. The difference between neck and back is notable, but disc injuries are difficult to treat regardless. This will be an important one to watch.
- Travis Beckum is dealing with neck issues, while Jim Sorgi remains sidelined with a shoulder injury.
Wrap these up and you’ve got enough reason for concern this close to the season. Hopefully the Giants will be able to square away these “complications” before Week 1, even if it means a heavy dose of backups through the rest of the preseason.
Stay tuned to Giants 101 for more updates as they come.

well ross is really proving that he is indeed glass joe. most of the injuries though really aren’t all that bad. it really is troublesome, but lets see where we are at after the first few games to really pass judgement. by then the offense should get into a rythem
and by the way ross has all the talent in the world to really be a great player, but if you cant get on the field all of that talent dont mean jack.
i was thinking if mr andrews can keep his head on straight ( big if ) and his back seems to hold up giving his age who else thinks we might have our future right tackle when big mac hangs em up
Did y’all see LeGarrette Blount running like a wildman on MNF? I wanted that dude on the team, a few of us did. Ahhh well, can’t sign em all.
Oh, and right now I’m thinking we should jettison Danny Ware and just keep Gartrell. Ware ain’t ever healthy, apparently has a diva attitude, and I dont think I remember ever seeing him actually make a play during the regular season. I’m down with Gartrell, sure he aint flashy but he’s perfect for a late game banger, and there ain’t no quit in him. Make it happen
Brett75, glass Joe is just about right. And I thought he could actually be good on returns too. Fingers crossed hoping for a healthy year!
Yup. I wanted the felon from U of Oregon but instead of using the 7th pick on him we ended up with a punter with medicore talent.
Well who else were we supposed to get to replace Feagles? He was the best option available at the time, but yes, it’d be nice to have Blount.
You guys do know that Blunt punched a team mate this week And reports have now surfaced that he punched he Oregon coach in 08?
Sorry, but his talent is simply not worth bringing a guy like that in. It isnt even worth thinking about in my opinion unless hes Adrian Peterson or Chris Johnson
I know, and he’s probably a ****, but I can’t help but like the guy.
yup dude got swagger
This ones for KD: (or any other Britt supporters)
Kenny Britt caught just one pass for eight yards in the Titans’ preseason win over Arizona on Monday night.
Britt started due to Justin Gage’s injury, but his boneheaded out-of-bounds kick of the football after an early drop was the only way you would’ve known he was on the field. He was flagged for delay of game. In a golden opportunity, Britt only served to hurt his chances of starting in the regular season.

He didnt work out at all this offseason and his off the field issues killed his focus, he hasn’t practiced well at all, and now isn’t starting on The Titans? with THAT receiving core?
+1 for Jerry Reese please
My memory is hazy on this… but I seem to recall some heated discussion here prior to the ’09 draft surrounding Britt’s “character issues.”
I think there had been some insinuations made by someone close to the Rutgers program that Britt had been something of a diva there. I vaguely remember a few days worth of debate here on whether Britt really was or was not a diva and if it would be wise for the Giants to draft a WR who may or may not be a diva.
The whole thing died down after a few days (or was it weeks?) and the final consensus here seemed to be that the accusations against Britt were probably made by someone who was just blowing smoke. Well, it’s starting to look like where there was smoke, there’s now fire…
+1 for Kyle Langan
I was a Britt guy and believe he probably has more upside. However, unlike the day of the draft I have no complaints with the pick of Nicks. My complaints weren’t that Nicks wasn’t good but it was more about passing on Britt’s size and talents. I think either Nicks or Britt will be the best WR from that draft class. I’m still not as high on Harvin, Maclin or Crabtree as most and still think DHB will be very good. Everyone said DHB was raw and he proved to be raw so nothing is settled at all concerning what kind of player he will be. It may go down as a 1983 QB level draft for WRs.
Have the Giant brass offered any official explanation as to why Tim Brown hasn’t been given a look as a possible PR/KR? Yeah, the kid is undersized but he’s got quicks which – last time I looked – is the one trait that most good returners seem to have in common.
Put another way, you could count the number of slow guys who have had success returning punts and kicks in the NFL on the fingers of Jim Abbott’s right hand. Yet, for some inexplicable reason, the Quinn/Coughlin braintrust has (on more than one occasion) experimented with the idea of having Gartrell “Glacier” Johnson return kickoffs. Only slightly more successful has been their audition of the only slightly faster Andre Brown for the same role. Yet the guy who’s reputed to be the fastest player on the team hasn’t even been given a sniff of a chance to win the job.
Yeah, the blocking has been a horror show. But even if a hole did miraculously open up… or there was breakdown in the opponent’s coverage… do you really think the likes of Gartrell Johnson or Andre Brown would make the opposition pay for it? At best, it would probably result in an extra five yards for Johnson… and maybe an additional 20 for [Andre] Brown. Whereas someone with [Tim] Brown’s speed would seem a likely threat to take it to the house.
Aaaah… I suppose I really shouldn’t worry. They’re the coaches… they know what they’re doing… they see these guys in practice… they’re privy to things we don’t see… the The Two Tommies must have a plan and… it will all be revealed to us in due course…
None of these injuries really scare me (excluding Ross. Again.)
I would have liked to see Blount in giant blue. Isn’t seubert out there getting into a fight every week? Blount is a thug but the kid can play. If they cut him due to off the field issues, I’d love to see a combo of him and AB1 out there
