New York Giants’ Rhett Bomar Gets His Big Chance

With Jim Sorgi‘s shoulder injury reportedly only sidelining the backup QB for 2-3 weeks, the biggest thing to come from Lance Laury’s hard sack of Sorgi might be the opportunity that it presents for third-string QB Rhett Bomar. Both Sorgi and starter Eli Manning will sit out of Saturday’s action against the Steelers, so Bomar figures to get as much as three quarters of work and, of course, ever-important reps with the top unit.

Originally thought to be battling himself for the 3rd-string QB job, Bomar’s brief but sparkling performance in his first preseason action and Sorgi’s balky shoulder probably makes Bomar’s presence on the final roster a foregone conclusion. Nonetheless, Bomar will have the opportunity on Saturday to cement that decision, or perhaps show that it’s time to start taking him seriously as a backup QB candidate (or fall flat on his face).

When asked if he thought he could build off last week’s work, Bomar said to Giants.com:

I do. That’s what I plan to do, want to do. I felt comfortable out there. It was fun to be out there and play again after a year….I need all the reps I can get being a young guy, and getting more reps this training camp than last year, but still limited. All the reps I can take, I’m happy to take them.

Bomar showed last week that he can make quick decisions, throw tight, accurate balls and boy can he move when he tucks the ball and runs. This weekend he’ll get a real shot to prove he can keep putting all those things together, a chance many young QB’s never even get. So kid, ya nervous?

I wouldn’t say ‘nerves.’ I’d say it’s excitement, anxious. It’s a great opportunity to prove what I have, and it’s what I’ve been looking for. I welcome all the reps I can get.

{Editor’s note: Word of advice for Bomar: find Victor Cruz!, and throw him the damn ball.}

Other Notes:

  • With Eli Manning and Jim Sorgi out, it sounds like Antrel Rolle may get some snaps at QB against the Steelers.

please stop mentioning the 02 playoff game! i felt like cleveland on Family guy…. “What the hell….NO NO NO NO NO!”

I don’t think the Giants will do anything dramatic at QB
Eli is not really hurt in any sense other than that he has to let the cut heal. Although I don’t think he’ll play next week he will be more than fine come opening day.
If the giants were fine heading into the season with Sorgi and Bohmar, they’ll be fine with Bohmar and whoever.
I don’t care who Sorgi was behind prior to us (even if it was Peyton — wait a tic!) or that he’s a six year vet
you don’t learn much sitting on the bench that you can actually apply
they need bodies to run practice and to finish preseason games, especially if Rhett gets blasted
    that’s it

and Moss is worth nuttin’ to nobody
this is his 5th year in the league
    he makes 1.2M
he’s done nothing and he has no future with us
maybe someone takes a flyer off the waiver wire
no one trades for him and his contract

plus, I’ve got a lot riding on Dominik Randolph

I can see it now Randolph! to Cruz!

    Holy Cross to UMass

    All Massachusetts all the time

Massachusetts: the greatest football state in the country

GiantT– It’s fairly simple. When a player who does not have X amount of years of NFL service (x=6 or 4 I think, not sure) gets waived by his teams, he does not immediatey become a free agent as a guy with more than X number of years would.

Instead, he is subjected to a process by which any team can claim him (and his contract). In case of multiple teams claiming him, all the other 31 teams in the league are ranked according to their record, with the weakest team getting priority.

Errgo, if the Giants released, say, Keith Bulluck, he becomes a free agent. Zak DeOssie, not having fulfilled the length of service requirement would not. Therefore, every other team in the league could claim DeOssie. The **** team to claim him gets him.

  6. Jim is right…nobody is giving up a draft pick for Moss. Not even Spags, who loves Giants from the SB Champ team.

  7. Rick Hanshi says:

My guess is that the Giants go with what they’ve got. Eli will be back and Sorgi will be back for the regular season. They’ve got Bomar and Dominik Randolph. They send one of them packing or to the practice squad and carry 3 QB’s this season.

  8. Abbott Stillmanfanfor55years says:

Peter King’s remarks regarding what the Giants needed just proves the point that the national media simply don’t know squat about the teams they cover (except for the Cowboys because they all sleep with Jerry Jones in their spare time).

When will all you young ‘uns understand that and stop paying attention to them? That goes for all the Fox (except, in the case of the Giants, Strahan) and ESPN guys (except for AP, who knows every variation on the routes to the dining room in Albany and the catered food in the players’ lounge).

    Oh, my!

    # MikeGarafolo – Gilbride said Antrel Rolle is “limbered up for a few” reps at QB. He was serious, too. Looks like we might see the Wilccat this wknd. #nyg

    • The Original G Man says:

Pretty sure I don’t like that idea.

    • Jim StollJim Stoll says:

      Orig

if Gilbride runs the wildcat it will be from the 18 yd line on 3d and goal and Rolle will handoff to Jacobs in some weird variation of the shotgun draw
