From practice reports, to player interviews, to G101′s own Dan Benton’s observations from some of the early training camp practices, the New York Giants defense looks primed for big things. With a talented, deep, and athletic roster, enthusiastic first-year coordinator Perry Fewell’s attitude has had a clear effect on the guys on his side of the ball, and the fans and media are optimistically taking note.
With this offseason’s subtle speculation that Tom Coughlin is quite possibly gearing up for his last hurrah, is it possible that a dominant performance by Fewell’s defense could parlay itself into a head coaching job for the 47-year-old defensive coordinator?
Certainly, he’d be in the running for any opening, but higher profile candidates are sure to be linked to the job (cough, cough Bill Cowher cough). But the Giants organization is said to be extremely high on Fewell, whose units are renowned for their aggressiveness in forcing turnovers and whose reputation for winning over his players has been upheld early on. The Giants value continuity, and a stellar showing from Fewell’s defense this year might force the Giants to think twice about bringing in a higher profile coach who would want either his own staff, or perhaps at least more input/control (cough, cough Bill Cowher) cough.
Remember, this is all speculative and dependent entirely on Fewell’s defense actually having a good-to-great year and Coughlin heading for the old folks home. And Jerry Reese could always go the opposite route, keeping Fewell where he is and bringing in an offensive head coach. Either way, Fewell will have a tremendous opportunity in front of him this year, and a pretty darn good set of players to go to battle with.
And the early feeling out of Albany is a good one.

What is an automaton? Is that a Transformer? Or something from Avatar???
That’s my MIT education sneaking out from under the covers. Think merging of robots, artificial intelligence, and humans. Exactly what we need at MLB.
think Victor Cruz is an automaton??
His name is “Victor Crus!” btw
and my guess was transformer
From Jane McManus of ESPN:
Good morning from Albany. The first practice of the day was pushed back to 10:20, and it will be a jog through rather than a full practice.
We should be getting some updates on the tight ends Jake Ballard (hamstring) and Scott Chandler (hip), who went for MRIs yesterday at the Hospital for Special Surgery.
Weather is sunny and gorgeous. I’ll check in after practice.
Ohm with a great story on the impact Chad Jones’ accident had on the other rooks:
http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/news/story?id=5459234
Chad Jones’ girlfriend called Pierre-Paul to deliver the crushing news that his Giants’ rookie roommate and close friend was in the emergency room, fighting for his life after a horrific car accident.
“No! That isn’t true,” said Pierre-Paul, whose voice still sounds in disbelief over a month later.
Pierre-Paul says he actually found out the news before the Giants did. So Pierre-Paul quickly dialed the phone numbers of his other rookie teammates — Phillip Dillard and Linval Joseph.
A shocked Pierre-Paul told Dillard that Jones had been in a terrifying accident and then continued to ramble on almost hysterically.
“He said, ‘Did you hear about Chad?’ ” Dillard said. “I was more scared because he wouldn’t answer my question. Is he alive or is he not? And Jason wouldn’t answer my question because he was too hysterical. I said, ‘Is he alive?’ He finally said, ‘yeah’ like 20 minutes later.”
Speaking of the HC gig, loved spags but how smart does his decision look now?? He could have stayed and we might have had a nice little dynasty run but instead he opts for the moola and starts his tenure with a really bad rams team that is years away from contention.
Jane McManus (ESPN)
“Chris Canty healthy, ready to contribute”
Justin Tuck, who plays up front with Canty on the defensive line, said Canty and defensive end Dave Tollefson were having the best camps this season in Albany. Tuck said Canty, at 6-foot-7 and 304 pounds, was going to bring an imposing presence to the defense.
“That guy, I really expect him to have a big year,” Tuck said. “He’s healthy, he’s excited about being on the football field and he brings that to the football field.”
Giants coach Tom Coughlin felt similarly, and praised Canty’s work ethic in getting game-ready after having his career put on pause by the injuries.

My UMass Economics degree didn’t cover automatons…But that’s what I get for picking French Lit as a minor.
Victor Cruz B!TCHES!!!
F–king Albert Camus. You suck!
And Jean-Paul Sarte too.
Why do French writers think that everyone is destined fo fail and they have no ability to change their destiny?
Huis Clos was one of the stoopidest books I ever read.
Give me Hell’s Angels or Women any day of the week.
Simon great article.
but thank you Kujo! We are jumpin the gun on the NEXT HC here. Whether its Coughlin, Fewel, Cower, or Joe Schmo, under what circumstances would a new HC come into office next year? Lets think this out. Ill give you three scenarios. And for the sake of argument, I am going to go with the extremes…
1. SB champs
2. 8-8
3.0-16
1. If we win the SB why the hell would TC leave. He’s not getting fired, he’s still got a year or two on his contract to make a few extra millions, and he just made it to the top of his profession for the 2nd time… why would he leave? Every player, coach, and person in the NFL strives to win he SB, I don’t see him hanging it up after he wins his 2nd… I expect him to go for his third… Strahan and Jerome Bettis are not the norm, they were two guys who lead their team day in and day out through some tough times. And when they won, they had nothing left in them because they played in the games. If we win the SB why the hell would TC step down… i dont see it happeneing.
2. If we go 8-8 or anything less, we’re getting a new coaching staff all together. With the talent on this team, and the words that the FO said after a very disappointing 8-8 show last year, these guys are on their last chance, and if TC cant get it done this year, he and his entire staff will be gone as well. If Fewell is the real deal, the Defense will be the real deal and will be unstoppable. Either they are good, and we are good, or they suck and we suck… do you see a trend here?
So basically, anyone who is rooting for TC to not be the HC next year, should be rooting against the Giants winning games… because as long as we can play some defense, we will make the playoffs, and there is not one team in the NFC that I am scared of. Coughlin will be here if we win this year, Coughlin will be out if we cant make the playoffs. And if we cant make the playoffs with this team, I dont want any of these coaches coaching my Giants, regardless how loud, passionate, or energetic they are.
This is such a talented team, TC knows how to run a football team, has proved it before, and has IMO the most talented team he’s ever had, so if he cant get it done with these guys, he wont be given another chance.
