From practice reports, to player interviews, to G101′s own Dan Benton’s observations from some of the early training camp practices, the New York Giants defense looks primed for big things. With a talented, deep, and athletic roster, enthusiastic first-year coordinator Perry Fewell’s attitude has had a clear effect on the guys on his side of the ball, and the fans and media are optimistically taking note.
With this offseason’s subtle speculation that Tom Coughlin is quite possibly gearing up for his last hurrah, is it possible that a dominant performance by Fewell’s defense could parlay itself into a head coaching job for the 47-year-old defensive coordinator?
Certainly, he’d be in the running for any opening, but higher profile candidates are sure to be linked to the job (cough, cough Bill Cowher cough). But the Giants organization is said to be extremely high on Fewell, whose units are renowned for their aggressiveness in forcing turnovers and whose reputation for winning over his players has been upheld early on. The Giants value continuity, and a stellar showing from Fewell’s defense this year might force the Giants to think twice about bringing in a higher profile coach who would want either his own staff, or perhaps at least more input/control (cough, cough Bill Cowher) cough.
Remember, this is all speculative and dependent entirely on Fewell’s defense actually having a good-to-great year and Coughlin heading for the old folks home. And Jerry Reese could always go the opposite route, keeping Fewell where he is and bringing in an offensive head coach. Either way, Fewell will have a tremendous opportunity in front of him this year, and a pretty darn good set of players to go to battle with.
And the early feeling out of Albany is a good one.

Obviously we have to see how things look come December, but so far I am completely impressed with Fewell. He seems to be as advertised.
If it carries over onto the field, he has my vote for our next head coach over anyone.
Couldn’t agree more. I think TC brings discipline and accountability to the team but the success of the team rests on the effectiveness of his DC.
Last year, the offense had a leader in Eli. They had a couple of bad games but it is was mostly when the D got torched early and the Off. didn’t have time to get into a rhythm.
If we have a dominant D this year, the Giants are superbowl favorites. The offense is way too powerful. Even if we win the superbowl, I think TC should be hired under a new job title and Fewell should take over the Reigns as HC.
I say this because if the Giants are successful, it is going to be due to the success of Fewell and his D. Other teams will be ready to hire him as a HC just like they did Spags. Spags got away and the D was exposed, we can’t let another great DC go.
Just say no to Bill Cowher.
(This message is brought to you by Anti-Chin Inc. and all known affiliates).
Let Cowher handle his own retirement. We don’t need another geriatric coach on the downside of his career.
I honestly don’t get what is up with the love affair with Cowher. I mean, yeah…I like the guy, but I don’t think he’s the greatest coach ever. If Fewell can get the defense to play up to it’s potential this year then I’d definitely want him over any other head coach. There’s just something about Fewell I like. He’s vocal, he doesn’t sugar goat everything, and he commands respect. That last part is huge because the NFL is full of players with huge egos. He has the type of personality where, so far, it seems like players would go into battle for him. That’s what you need. So far I love everything he’s shown and I pray it translates to the regular season.
I’m not hating on Coughlin or anything. I actually like Coughlin a lot. I just think that sometimes players get a little too comfortable and there will need to be a shake up to keep everyone on their toes. Coughlin definitely isn’t the best head coach out there, but I’d still take him over Cowher.
You think that Coughlin “[is] vocal, he doesn’t sugar goat everything, and he commands respect. That last part is huge because the NFL is full of players with huge egos. He has the type of personality where, so far, it seems like players would go into battle for him” more so than Cowher?
I don’t disagree about Fewell, but I think Cowher brings a lot more of that than Coughlin does.
Specifically, I watched Coughlin stand on the sidelines speechless with his mouth open like the sleeve of wizard as his team completely mailed it in with a playoff spot on the line at the end of the year last year. No way that happens with Cowher.
Dan,
Was hoping to discuss doing some stat crunching with you. Not sure if you remember me or not but I sent you the write up titled Giants Appear Ready the year the G-men won the big one.
I’d like to be able to send you some excel files that would show you what I’m working on and see if it would be something you’d be interested in getting out for me.
Anyway, it took me a bit to find the site but glad to see the whole gang as well as new writers doing what you guys do best.
Thanks,
ny92mike
If his Defense performs as good as or better than what we got from Spags, then hands down, I’m good with ol’ TC shutting it down for good and being completely happy with Diesel in the tank!
I really think the Chargers are going all the way this year. Remember when they beat us in NY last year. They’re incredible.
???
that was my roommate. what a chach! gotta lock my comp now obviously!
They aint going too far without Jackson, and their left tackle.
Although I do like Rivers, and the young man the selected to run the ball.
However, they will face no one of note within their division. Unless the Radiers wake up in a big way.
The Giants with a re-newed defensive push, and running game can/will RIP THE CHARGERS LIPS OFF! You herd it here first. The Jets pimp slapped them in their own house in a big time situation. They will need to get over that. As a matter of fact, at the peak of their strength, they could not take out either the Steelers, Pats, or Colts. They are not destined for grateness.
From the recap of tonight’s Oakland-Dallas game:
The Cowboys were within 16 yards of the end zone on four drives against the Oakland Raiders on Thursday night, yet managed only three field goals. It came back to bite them when the Raiders got two touchdowns and a field goal in the final 4:58 for a 17-9 victory.
Dallas (1-1) had snaps from Oakland’s 16, 13, 9 and 10 without getting into the end zone. One of those drives was stopped on downs, and the others were settled by David Buehler making kicks of 42, 27 and 28 yards.
Part of Dallas’ offensive woes trace to the line, which gave up four sacks in 20 snaps.
Romo was sacked three times on the opening drive, twice after getting to the 16. Jon Kitna got a series with the starting blockers and wound up getting sacked, too, nearly for a safety.

I got to imagining the havoc that a healthy Giants front seven might wreak on that Dallas offensive line and… oops… gotta clean up… I just wet myself.
Easy, fellas.
We’re two weeks into training camp and we’re ready to hire this guy as our next head coach? Let’s be realistic here–he’s got a heck of a lot of potential to live up to. He’s been touted as our savior because he is the antithesis of Sheridan–loud, energetic, charismatic. And yeah, his players want to “go to battle for him.” But I wanna see what this guy does schematically. I need to see how he makes adjustments when his plans are spoiled by any number of things that crop up. How will he respond to a blow out? A losing streak? Will he be able to keep his players focused and motivated when the times are rough? Will he be able to find ways to utilize all of his weapons? And does he empower his leaders to be his voice? And just how well will our defense play?
These all need to be answered before we can even entertain the notion of retaining him as our defensive coordinator, let alone usurping Coughlin as our head coach. There’s a lot of hype and hope surrounding him. I suspect he’ll live up to most, but not all, of it. But a deep playoff run and/or a shot at the Lombardi trophy would certain increase the likelihood of his star continuing to rise. But speculating about it now, as we finish up our first week or two of training camp, is silly.
We are all saying if the D performs, he should be the front runner to replace Coughlin. If Fewell has other teams looking to hire him a HC, we shouldn’t let him get away. This team is in its prime. We can’t afford a year like last year because we make a mistake with a new DC.
All we are saying is if the D dominates, chances are we are in the superbowl. If that happens, Fewell needs to be retained.
